At the moment I fly a Trex 600 and a Raptor 90SE for helicopters and my newest model is my
100cc Extra 330. I have been flying for about 3 years now and have just recently enjoyed
getting into giant scale airplanes. But I enjoy both helicopters and airplanes equally. I also do
Aerial Photography with RC helicopters for a company called Skycam San Diego.
(www.skycamsandiego.com). So how about you guys. What do you fly?
Yes it is a very large plane. It is a Hangar 9 33% Extra 330S. Its almost 2.5 meters from wing tip
to wing tip. It weighs almost 12 kg. Its a pretty big plane. A few of my friends fly some bigger
ones. I am in the Navy but not a pilot. I am the Crew Chief in the back of the helicopter. We like
to say the pilots are just the bus drivers.
The Engine on the Extra is a 100cc 2 stroke Gas engine from a company called Desert Aircraft.
The nice part about gas is its much cheaper then glow and not as messy. No need for glow
igniters either. It has its own ignition which provides spark to the spark plugs. Yea that would
be nice to help you out in NY. I am from Long Island so I would love to go back and see the old neighborhood.
Welcome to our community! So you are a occupational flyer with military back ground. That's great you enjoy flying as your profession and also as your hobby... Just curious how could you transport your gigantic plane to the field? Doesn't look it would fit in the trunk space of most cars...
I love SD and visited USS Midway last time when I was there.
He He. Yea its a pretty big plane. All the seats in the back of my mini van fold down into the
floor. Once the wings are off the plane can fit right into the back of the van but doesn't have
much room to spear. I can't go any bigger in airplane otherwise I will not be able to transport it
to the field. I hope to one day fly 50% size planes but I will need a box trailer just to move my
planes around.
We have several guys in my club that fly jets. Or club president is a turbine instructor so I could get signed off for my turbine waiver but I don't see me having the money at this time to put into
turbine jet plane. I wish I did but I think the wife would kill me.
Yea, my wife has been pretty understanding with all my toys. She knows we men need our
hobbies. I try not to go overboard and save up if I am looking to start a new project. I will
certainly do something nice for her on Valentines day.
Your field looks pretty nice. It looks like you have lots of space there. If you guys are getting
allot of RF interference there you should give spectrum 2.4ghz a try. I have been flying
2.4ghz for about six months now and love it. Never have to worry about someone jamming
me. I highly recommend it.
Here is a link to my field. It is right next to MCAS Miramar here in San Diego. The google
image is pretty old and does not show the nice covered tables and start up line area and the
heli pad. The runway in the picture has also been redone and is brand new. Its a beautiful 650 foot runway great for the large planes.
Yeah, you're absolutely right Darren. Based on my 2-week experience with DX-7, I have to say I love this system! Definitely free from RF interference even in small fields in Manhattan. Without a radio antenna, my T-28 Trojan looks awesome. Amazing you guys have a dedicated field for RC planes and helis. That never happens here in NYC...
