Hi everyone. With less than three weeks until the exam, I was wondering how your study was going?

If you are like me, you will have limited time available for study. What topics are you prioritising and how are you studying these areas?

Personally, when I find time to study I've been working on vocabulary, but I'm now trying to shift my attention to grammar and comprehension. Does anyone have any good tips??

I'd recommend this site for lots of great practice:

Good luck!

yeah, it's really coming down to the wire. i'm sure it must be really difficult for those of you living overseas, cuz your exposure to the language is limited. living in Osaka, most of my preparation comes in the form of reading everything around me - train posters, leaflets left in my mailbox, junk mail on my keitai. i also try to use as much 1級 grammar as possible in daily conversation (which is quite hilarious, as 90% of it is formal, written Japanese). It works great for the lower levels of the test, tho. As far as listening goes, I just turn on the TV or listen in on other people's conversations. I may not be able to pass the test this year because of my lack of knowledge of obscure kanji/vocab, but after 6 years in this country, i can order a pizza on the phone, make airplane reservations, send a package at the post office, report a stolen bike, get a medical check-up, and carry on a conversation for days without using any English. I only wish this stuff were on the test!
A friend of mine told me that all the 漢字 that appear in the Lv.1 test can be found in the 漢検3級 test for native-speakers. There are several study guides for this test sold at Kinokunia right across from the JPLT prep books.

Hi Ben, I think you've got a good plan working your way through the grammar. It's one area where you should score well if you prepare properly.

Thanks for the link. I also need to improve my vocab, but so far have mainly been picking up new words as I work my way through a couple of sample exam papers. I'll try and have a go with SpeedAnki, too.

Wesu, yes, compared to my time in Japan it's much more difficult to improve my Japanese in London. Like you say, the exposure just isn't there. Because of this, there is also less reason to study - you already understand most of the language you see around you day to day.

If you can do all of those things in Japanese then I wouldn't worry too much about the JLPT. It's just a formal qualification of proficiency. Lots of people who pass the JLPT probably wouldn't have your experience or confidence in Japan.

Greyblooz, it's an interesting point you make, that Level one JLPT grammar is equivalent to 3kyu kanji kentei. I've never thought about that before. Once I bought the level 8 book and it was pretty difficult!
