In order to keep our English level and skill, why don't we talk about specific topics here like voice?
I'll put a topic here once a month.
If people join and continue to talk about it.
It'll be the first one so the topic is "festival".
I think there are a lot of festivals in Japan and another countries.
I guess many people who join here have been to another countries and might join some festivals.
If you don't mind, let's share here!
Then if you have any idea of topics, please let me know via message!

I used to live in Nagasaki.
One of famous festivals at Nagasaki is "Okunchi".
There are some dragons and they are handled by people.
I didn't see directly so I may be wrong.
If you have some right info, please correct it.
Sorry for poor knowledge of it.
It's good idea,yumiko.

I've been to Yoshinogawa festival.
I go there twice a year every summer.
Do you know Yoshinogawa festival?
If you go there on the first day, you can see a lot of stores and
wonderful fireworks.
And next day, you'll see a lot of fantastic fireworks and a lazer beam.
When you see the lazer beam and fireworks, you can hear wonderful music
and Japanese drums.
When I go there, I always put on some plastic sheets on the ground in
the afternoon. I leave them behind for two days.あっかんべー
So I can see them in the best area.
Shall we go there?
Oh, Shikiri, really?
Sounds really nice!
If I can get some paid holidays around the season next year, please take me the festival!
I'll be available at the end of month so I hope the festival holds around the time!
Oh,do you think so?

Yoshinogawa festival holds on August 15th,16th every year.
I could see the fireworks lying on the sheet this year.
It was very very comfortable.

But when I put on the sheet, it is always very very hot.
And I have to take some stones to the sheet.
I always put on some stones not to move it.
And I almost burned my hand, because the stone was very very hot.

Yes!
I really think so.
Maybe the middle of month also isn't so busy.
If I can get the days off, could you take me there?
I'll help you to throw those stones away!

Oh!Thank you!

I'm looking forword to going together!

It is difficult to find out this place, but I could find it finally.
I’m happy to see Yumiko & all again like voice room here.
Hi, annie.
Thank you for joining us.
By the way, have you ever been to some festivals before?
If so, could you tell us here?
Hi! annie!

Now we are talking about festivals.
If you know any other festivals, please tell us!
Hello. I'm Mie. Nice to meet you,Yumiko,Shikiri and Annie!

Althogh I'm from Nagoya,I'm not familiar with the festivals in Nagoya. So I try to tell you the weddings in Nagoya.
Now I live in Hyogo. I'm often asked "Is it true the weddings in Nagoya are gorgeous?" "Does a bride bring a lot of large furniture to her new house?"by western people.
There are both correct! However,I realized that after I came Hyogo because that's common in Nagoya,so I couldn't recognize that's uncommon custum in other area.
By the way,do you know there is a custum in Nagoya as the relatives of bride and groom who are on the roof of their house throw neighborhood who is in their yard a lot of snacks after wedding? I heard there isn't such curtum in the west area. Really? How about the other area?

Lastly,I just rose to level 4,so I may mistake some words or grammer. Althogh I use a dictionay not to mistake,if I miss something, please overlook me and tell me my mistakes.
See you again!
Hi, All

I'm Kenken from Machida.
My hometown is Fuchu, which is northen area of Machida.
In my hometown, we have a litttle weird festival called "Darkness Festival".
Before carrying portable shrine, all of the light are put off!
And the roads for the potable shrine are barricaded from the speculators.
In the darkness, we can hear the shouting from people carrying the shrine.
It is one of the most exciting festival.
Hi, Mie!
I sometimes watched tv drama which was about the wedding in nagoya.
It looked great!
Some people hide money under some tatami mats.
Is that right?
If I were wrong, please correct me.
Then, speaking of throwing things, in western area, it's not so common!
Even in japan, we have some differences between western and eastern area.
Anyway, you seem to worry about mistakes, even native speakers make mistakes so you don't worry about it so much!
Hello, Kenken.
I'd never heard of the festival otherwise I've been living in Tokyo more than twenty years.
Sounds a little bit scary but exciting!
hi, i think this page is good idea to maintain our English writing skill!
yumiko, u r doing good job!
わーい(嬉しい顔)

I love fstival, when i was kid, i often went to the small festival near my house, and eating sweets and tasty food.
i wasted some monry on trifle toys as well haha.

I wanna go to beer festival in Germany, and get drunk with friendly german people!
Hi, Franc.
Thank you for your comment.
I'm happy to hear that.
By the way, are you living in German?
Sounds great!
I don't like beer so much but do you think the quality of German beer is different from Japanese one?
If so, I'd like to try to drink it.
If you go to the festival, could you give the details via this page?
I hope you'll do.
Anyway, have a good day!
Hi, all!

Mie!,I think it's one of the interesting customs.
I'd like to see the wedding of Nagoya.

Kenken!, I'm interested in Darkness festival.
But I think small kids are scared of it.わーい(嬉しい顔)

Franc,yumiko!
I've been to Germany.
It was exiting.
I've drunk three kinds of German beer.
Two kinds of beer were great. But German black sweet beer wasn't good.あせあせ
It was sweet. Can you imagine?
It's like a beer coke.ふらふら
But I'd like to go to a beer festival in Germany.
I want to know details of it.
Hi, all!

Speaking of a festival in Fuchu , I remember my friend lived near Ookunitama shrine complained the sound of fireworks in early morning every year. :-)

I''ve to Germany four times , because I like German beers , Mountains and Medieval towns.
Buuut I've never been to German beer festival , Oktoberfest ! Someday I'd like to go there.
Anyway we can go Oktoberfest at many places in Japan these years. I've been to Hibiya (in May and September ) , Omotesando, Yokohama and Tochigi . It was very fan!

Hi,Dear all,

>Yumiko
No, I haven’t. These days, form back to University, I have no good time to enjoy life.
I’m suffering to write my papers and presentation in overseas, but I’d prefer to visiting shrine or temple at a New Year festival.

>Mie
Oh, I know that Nagoya where is center of Japan Island has legend of wedding ceremony, but I haven’t know the story of bird that you said.
If there is the food festival in Nagoya, I would go to join there, because Nagoya is half way between Tokyo and Kansai area, and it sounds good taste.
To Yumiko and しきり

haha あせあせ i don't live in Germany ya, but have been there many times!

Usually in Autum, there r some beer fastivals, so i just wanna try once. Many Europeans visit Germany for that festival, so i think it should be fun!

In my opinion, German beer tastes much softer than Japanese one.
I'm not good drunker, so for me, German beer is easier to drink.

btw, I just wonder, New Nova company will open Voice room as before or not... if they don't have Voice anymore, i feel really disappointin....
(>_<)
Hi, Go.
My father used to work for a japanese bank and worked as a branch manager at Fuchu branch.
On Setsubun no hi, he threw some beans to people at Ookunitama Shrine with famous people.
However, I'd never been there...
Sorry, Shikiri.
I skipped you(>_<)
You said you had been to Germany.
Sounds great!
I'd like to go there and try to drink some German beer.
Hi, annie.
I usually go to a shrine with my family on new year's day.
Then I do an omikuji.
I've never picked a bad one up so it might be ok.
Hi, Franc.
Oh, don't you live in Germany?
I see.
Speaking of the new NOVA, we have to check them out.
If they don't have voice, it might become meaningless!
This group is very motivating. Everyone is making a great effort here to keep their English skills up to snuff. There may be a few mistakes here and there, but nothing to be worried about.

As for festivals, I have not been to any big famous festivals as I don't have a lot of free time. I often go to the local festivals. Just last week we had a really niece harvest festival where they gave away free vegetables. The best thing I enjoy about our local festivals is the Samba dancers, a small group of beautiful young Japanese dancer wearing very small costumes from Brazil (almost naked). I took a few pictures.

Has anybody been to the festival in Saitama for fertility? There is also a shrine in Kawasaki dedicated to the event.
Hi, Pancho.
Thank you for your comment.
I've never been to the festival but I went to see a halloween parade in Kawasaki last month.
It was the first time to see the festival.
There were a lot of people who were wearing very strange costumes.
It was fun!
Have you ever been to these kinds of festivals? I think you might have had.
I have never heard of YOSAKOI. What is it about?

Yumiko, for Halloween in USA we usually have many house parties, people dress up an play games. Kids often have a parade and contest in elementary school during the day, then they walk around the neighborhood asking for candy (Trick-or-Treating).

In Japan, I took my son to the Moritown Mall in Akishima (JR Ome Line) and they had candy, costumes, parades and face painting. Anyone living i the area should try to stop by next year. I think it is popular because of the US Air Force Base (Yokota).
Hi, Barubaru.
I'm sorry I didn't know it and 've never seen the festival.
However, as you may imagine, I sometimes saw the festival on TV.
It looks so fun!
If I'll see the festival somewhere, I'd like to see it in Kochi(^@^;)
Hi, Pancho.
Are you from America?
I met a lot of america teachers and they told us about Halloween.
Whenever I heard about it, I always thought it would be very fun.
Actually, when I went to the halloween parade in Kawasaki, I was with an american.
Then I asked him the parade would be different from American's one and he said "Yes".
Did you also feel so?
Yumiko,
Yes I am from America and we celebrate Halloween a little different from here. But the experience at the Moritown mall was a little similar as it is organized with the American Air Force residents. In Mexico, they don't celebrate Halloween, but there is another holiday that is related called "Day of the Dead" and held overnight from November 1st till 2nd. If you have a NOVA Diplomat textbook, Zone E, look at lesson number 31 (I think). My parents always go to the cemetery to pray for their parents. Younger people stay up all night drinking, singing and laughing until day break. I have only been there once. I hope I can go there again in the future.

Barubaru, I saw the links, and enjoyed the pictures. I think the costumes are very colorful. I'll try to find a YOSAKOI dance near my home next summer.

For parades in America, the best is always Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Thanksgiving will be on November 22 this year (4th Thursday of the month). The most famous one is called "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade", There should be plenty of pictures and video clips online. You will probably recognize it from the giant balloon floats they carry and other decorated floats. There is a movie scene in the first Spiderman movie where Spiderman hops on the balloons to catch the Green Goblin. Sound familiar?

The other famous parade is called "Tournament of Roses Parade" held traditionally on New Years day. All of the floats all completely (100%) decorated with natural flowers. It is very beautiful.

Hope I didn't bore anyone.
Barubaru, I'm sorry I couldn't see it.
I was wondering why.
Maybe my pc's fault...
I wish I could see it泣き顔
Hi, Pancho.
I heard about Thanksgiving Day too.
You guys usually eat a pumpkin pie on the day, don't you?
Around the day, some teachers complained that it was difficult for them to find a pumpkin pie!
I thought it wasn't so difficult because there are a lot of cake shops.
However, I've never looked for them so I can't say it for a certain though...
Thanksgiving pumpkin pie is very different from what we find in Japan. The size is almost like a Christmas cake, but not as tall. The pie has a nice think bread crust on top and inside is a thick creamy orange center. You can buy it from some bakery stores, but most people want to buy a frozen pie at the super market an bake it at home.

The really important part of Thanksgiving dinner is turkey. Accompanied with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and corn. A nice juicy ham and plenty of wine. Mmmm, I'm hungry. Good place to find this stuff is COSTCO.
Hi, Pancho.
Thank you for giving us the details of Thanksgiving Day!
Sounds really fun!
It'll come soon, right?
Will you cook something at home on the day or go somewhere and celebrate it?
If you want, you can find some places where you can celebrate, right?
My american friend said he would go somewhere.
Before I heard it, it would be difficult because we don't have such custom in Japan!
One of the teachers whom I know really liked costco, anyway.
In Japan there is a very similar holiday called Labor Thanksgiving on November 23rd. The tradition in Japan was to have the emperor go to the shrine in a farming community then everyone has a huge feast with the fresh vegetables they harvested that season. In my town here in Japan (Higashiyamato) we had a festival last week where they gave away free vegetables to take home. Although the purpose is different, the holiday is much the same.

In Japan, American Thanksgiving is not very traditional. We usually do not have anything special in our house. Most Americans will go to a local PUB for a turkey or pumpkin meal. But the real purpose, just like Japanese, is to get very drunk.

The same way that Halloween is very similar to O'bon. But Christmas is completely different, so is Valentine and we do not know what to about Boy's Day (Cinco de Mayo in US)
Hi, Pancho.
As you said, we have a similar holiday but we don't have any special meals on that day.
Perhaps Japanese people like festivals and holidays therefore we have a lot of holidays like every month.

Then I know that it's not only Christmas day but also New Year Day is different.
Japanese usually spend with boyfriends, girlfriends and their partners on Christmas Day then we generally celebrate New Year with family.
However, as long as I know, how to spend these days is completely opposite in western countries.
Hi, everyone.
I hadn't put any comments for ages.
Anyway, speaking of the topic, how about talking about movies?

Actually I watched some movies this year but the current one was spooky!
The title is "Beowulf".
Have you ever seen it?
It was so scary(>_<)
My friend said "It was fun to see you (due to your reaction).
The friend knows I don't like scary things.
Therefore the friend wanted to let me show the movie!
My this year's best movie is "charlote's web".
Maybe the spelling of the title might be wrong.
I'm sorry.
I think the movie was remarkable!
To be frank, I really like homey movies so I was very impressed by this movie(^O^)/
