日記を英語で書こうコミュの好きな英語集(favourite English proverb)

いつの間にかマイミクが6人になっていました。ですが、私は小豆アイスさん以外とはマイミクになっていないので、他の方もできれば自己紹介をお願いします。

それと、このコミュニティで好きなことわざや格言などを挙げて説明していただくとありがたいです。
私からは好きなエジソンの言葉

偉業を成し遂げるには、才能よりも長い時間の努力が必要です。最近始めたテニスが上手くなるように上達したいですが、中学から大学までテニスをやっていた人には勝てない。これから10年間、テニスの練習を頑張って、大学生の上級者に勝てるようにします

I am glad that members are increasing.
I have heard of this proverb in Japanese, however, I did not know the meaning. "Inscrutable" means unpredictable, I think.
Therefore, the meaning of the proverb is that we cannot tell future.

I welcome you writing this community anytime you want.

Good　evening.
My favorite English word is" something".
But this community needs proverb.
I have never thought about that.
"The salt of the earth ,the light of the world".
This has very deep mean.

NASA launchd spaceshuttle Atlantis this week. The purpose is to send devices to international space station(ISS). But, NASA was trying other project in 1960s, more difficult than building an ISS.

In 1969, NASA's astronaut reached the moon. The astronaut Neil Armstrong said after walking on the moon,
"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

After that, NASA and other space agency have never sent an astronaut to the moon. But, Japanese space agency sent a satellite to the moon's orbit. The moon age came back

Translating a sentence word-to-word
地に塩、世に光。
That is in Bible.
That includes too many means
so I as have my poor English can not explain it.

I guess the meaning of the sentence.
Salt and light are necessary thing for the earth and the world, respectively.

You are right, The salt of the earth, the light of the world is from the bible.

It is hard to explain but I'll try to give a simple explanation. The bible says people are like salt and light. Long ago, salt was much more important than it is today. It was a seasoning, but also a preservative. So people are the salt that preserve the world and the light that keeps it from darkness.

Thank you for an explanation. Salt is necessary thing for us. Japan is surrounded by ocean, however, some of place does not face ocean, such as Nagano and Yamanashi.

There is a famous proverb in japan, "sending salt to a rival"「敵に塩を送る」. This proverb came from a legend in 16th century.

A lord Takeda Shingen, whose capital is in Yamanashi, was in trouble with lack of salt and resulting nutrition shortage among soldiers. His rival Uesugi Kenshin, whose capital is in Niigata near japan sea, noticed the fact. In that condition, he could beat Shingen easily. But, Kenshin thought it is not fair to do so. Then, he sent salt to Shingen.
