Sharon : Steppin' Out, one of the first, real hits on MTV. Joe : Yeah, I suppose it was. S : Yes, really, really huge hit. Alright, MTV what do you think of it today? It changed a lot. J : I don't watch it. S : You don't watch it at all? J : I rule that out of my life completely. (Sharon laughs) S : Lucky you! (Sharon moves closer, then moves back.)So what do you think of all the popstars then? J : I don't know. It depends on who you're talking about. I don't like to generalize anyone really. (Sharon taps Joe's leg with her shoe.) S : Come on. J : I don't know. S : Come on. J : What do you mean by popstars anyway? S : If you don't watch MTV...then you don't...I'm talking about MTV stars of today. J : I'm not interested. S : No? J : No S : Not at all. J : No, not particularly.(smiles) S : What do you listen to? Come on. J : I listen to all kinds of things. I have very ecletic taste. But ah, I mean, a lot sort of mainstream pop, is not very interesting to me. S : You live in England, right? J : I'm still bouncing around between England and New York. S : Don't you find that English music is so (fluff? floss?)It just doesn't last. All the kids that come up, they have an instant #1, then boom, they're gone. You never hear from them again. J : Yeah, there's a lot of that. S : Very disposable. J : There always has been. There seems to be more of that. I don't know. This is where I messed up and lost a few seconds... S : So what was it like reuniting with the band, after 20 yrs.? J : It was really great fun. It was great fun. It was something no one ever thought would happen. Especially me. I never imagined it would happen. I was always interested in going forward. And ah...an album, which we did last year, called Volume 4, we are really pleased with. We had a great time touring, and it was just a one-off. We are not going to keep... S : Going back? J : ...just flogging it to death, for years and years to come. That's what makes it special. One album, one tour or be a very long tour. And ah, that's it. S : And then you move on? J : Yeah S : This year, you've got a big birthday! (Joe laughs) S : Come on! J : Yeah, yeah, the big 30. S : Yeah, right, it's great though. I loved it. I loved being 50. J : You're 50 too? S : Turning 50. J : When you look as good as we do, there's nothing to worry about really.(Both laugh)It just gets better(twice),with age. Like a fine...cheese. Sh: Are you going to have a big party? J : I'm planning to have a party, for at least a week. S : That's the way to do it! Definitely! Don't you think that's a great accomplishment, to turn 50? J : To still be alive? S : Yeah. J : Yeah, for some people, more than others. S : I do, especially in our industry. I think it's brilliant. J : I feel great. I don't feel different than I felt ten years ago, fifteen years ago. Really. S : I do. I feel better.(Joe takes lint or hair off of his sleeve.)Definitely feel better. Alright, I want to thank you, Joe, for being here with us today, and good luck with everything. J : Cheers. S : And Joe Jackson's Afterlife in stores. Go get it. It's
