boil: (自・他動詞)沸騰する(させる)、沸く、沸かす;煮沸する、煮える、煮る;煮詰まる、煮詰める、煮込む;ゆだる、ゆでる;<絹糸などを>練る。 "boil"は殆ど水またはお湯でだけれど、<果物・野菜・肉など・スープ・酒などの>汁、液、ジュースでも使える。 例:boiled potatoes, eggs, fish etc.
I use "shallow fry" (I am British by the way). Same meaning as fry, but to emphasize it is not deep fry. I wouldn't "shallow fry an egg", as I don't deep fry eggs, but I would "shallow fry potatoes" as that is a different meal from deep-fried chips (*).
Darren: I know the chips part (being Canadian, we have the privelage of choosing to use either British or American English, including spelling, but I'll admit we are more prone to use American -- North American -- slang or vocabulary). Anyway, we do eat Fish & Chips in NA. Yeah, I figured maybe the shallow fry was British, as well as coddle (we only use coddle in the sense of overcaring for someone, usually a child, and/or spoiling them).
Never heard of 'blazing', but there are also 'smelting', 'blackening', 'brazing', 'caramelizing', and various other terms, but these are all pretty specific and relate only to very particular methods of cooking.
