?AnIranian student returned home from the US to teach at a state university. ?He had to choose a position from one of three universties. ?He went with his brother to all the interviews at the universities. An American friend asked him about it.
?The Iranian explained that he would follow the advice of his brother in choosing the position."Why?"asked the American with great surprise. ?"Oh,"he replied,"because he is the head of the family now. ?I must do anything that he thinks will be best for the family. ?"The American wondered if the Iranian felt free and happy.
?The Iranian student did not feel free to choose his own career.
?Instead,he thought first about what would be best for the family.
?In a similar situation an American would expect to decide what job would be best for himself or herself.
?Indeed, young Americans are encouraged by their families to make their own career decisions.
