I know that there have been quite a few changes over the past year and especially the past few months. To help keep everyone on top of the changes I thought I would send out some clarification.
This information is how it is today. I expect this area to continue to change over the next year or so, since I do not believe all of the issues have been resolved.
So here we go. The community colleges are not letting au pairs take their ESL (English as a Second Language) classes anymore. Au pairs can still take English language classes at a community college if they want, but usually they cost about $3,000-$4,000 per quarter. It is still possible to find courses in English conversation at some public libraries, community centers, and high schools for free or for a small fee. So, to improve your English, at a reasonable price, this is the best option. These classes will NOT count towards your class hours for the program. To get the 60 hours required for the program, au pairs can take any kind of class (pottery, art, dancing, yoga, etc.) as long as it is at an accredited college, like Kirkland Community College, Bellevue Community College, one of the Seattle Community Colleges, or UW, etc. Online classes can not be counted towards education hours. The rule of the State Department is designed so that au pairs will have an American classroom experience, to get them speaking with other Americans in public, and help their English listening and comprehension.
I know this is a bit complicated. If anyone does not understand something, ask me. I can be reached by phone or email. Like I said before, I expect this to change, believe me there have been so many changes, some have happened and then changed before I even sent out an update. I will keep everyone posted with the latest information as it comes out.
