Summary
Artists from Lithuania and Japan will participate in an exchange through the organization of an exhibition.
The country name of Lithuania is said to originate in the Lithuanian word for ‘rain’. In contrast, Japan is known as ‘the land of the rising sun’.
In Lithuania where rain falls in abundance, the sun is sought, while in Japan, ‘the land of the rising sun’, it is hoped that blessed rain will fall.
This summer, artists from ‘the rain country’ and ‘the land of the rising sun’ will gather together in a contemporary art exhibition to be joined in a bridge of exchange.

リトアニアと日本両国のアーティスト達が、展覧会を通した交流をいたします。
リトアニアの国名の由来は、リトアニア語で「雨」を表す言葉から発しているとされています。一方、日本は、「日出づる国、the land of the rising Sun」と呼ばれています。
雨の多いリトアニアでは太陽を願い、そして日出づる国日本では、恵みの雨を願います。
この夏、「雨の国」と「日出づる国」のアーティストが現代美術展につどい、交流の架け橋で結ばれます。

The story and purpose behind the exhibition
The capital city of Lithuania, Vilnius, was selected as the European Capital City of Culture in 2009.
Embracing this opportunity, a contemporary art exhibition involving Japan and Lithuania was planned with the work of Fluxus artist Ay O, known as ‘the rainbow artist’ who was a close associate of the Lithuanian-born Fluxus founder George Maciunas, to take main stage.
This exhibition ‘Rain meets the Sun’, under the direction of Lithuanian artist Saulius Valius who has many experiences of exchange with Japan, will lead to profound dialogue between 2 generations and 2 cultures. Besides contemporary artwork of mid-career and young artists from both countries, performing art, and piano performances, there will be lectures given by organizers from both sides and exchanges in the form of round-table discussions. An introduction to ‘The Mino Japanese paper lantern art Exhibition’, contemporary art and music, and traditional paper crafts will appear together in this event.

リトアニアの首都・ヴィリニュスが、2009 年の欧州文化首都に選定されました。
これを機会に、フルクサスメンバーとして、フルクサス創始者ジョージ・マテューナスの生まれたリトアニアと関係が深く、「虹の作家」と言われる靉嘔氏の作品を中心に据えた、リトアニアと日本両国の現代美術展開催が計画されました。
この展覧会 “ Rain meets the Sun” は、リトアニアのアーティスト、サウリュス・バリウスによって、数多くの日本との交流経験をもとに着想され、2つの世代と2 つの文化の間で交わされる興味深い対話がはかられています。両国の中堅、若手作家による現代美術作品の展示と、パフォーミングアートや、ピアノ演奏のほか、双方の企画者たちによる講演や円卓会議のような交流、伝統の和紙を使った「美濃和紙あかりアート展」を紹介し、現代美術と音楽と伝統の紙文化との共演を演出することでしょう。
