I'd like to rent a place in Tokyo or find a appartment with sharemates. I don't want to live in a guest house. Any advice where i can find a good deal ? thanks
I am guessing that you are a foreigner. I would look at Metropolis for ideas. But unless you are moving into a place with tenants already you will need to find a guarantor (easier said than done). There are small real estate agents in SHinjuku that specialize in that. YOu might want to check them out.
Ken has stuff for 180,000 and up.... it is all nice stuff they have. MY place was quite a bit more, but for the location and size, the deal was OK.
If you are looking for an "apart" not a "mansion" then Ken might not be good, but at least Ken will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of size and location....

180 K is a little expensive for me I was thinking about something closer to 100 or 120K.
A good deal I guess is a deal where you have a high ratio value/price.
Where do you expect to be working?
What kind of commute can you tolerate (random statistic - the average commute for a person working in Tokyo is 57 minutes, apparently - and the vast majority commute by public transport)?
How much space do you think you need?
How long do you expect to stay? (Many landlords do not like renting out on short leases, the normal lease is 2 years - there are specialist short term places for a few weeks to a year)
Central Tokyo is expensive, but public transport is extensive (if crowded, but I'm sure people here can give you pointers as to how to avoid the worst of it), and further out rents are more reasonable.
The Japanese residential lettings market has various initial costs which may come as a surprise to the first time visitor. "Key money" and deposit (typically 2-3 months rent, each), agency fee (1 month rent), a month's advance rent, it all adds up. There are sometimes properties available which don't require some of the above though.
Sometimes it is easier to get your company (assuming it has a legal presence in Japan) to actually rent the property, and arrange them to deduct rent from your wages. Whether they are willing to do so depends on the company (it is a hassle for them, but often companies with foreign employees understand the hassles that their employees face, and offer this).
If you are fully employed, and therefore meet the legal requirements, a possible option is to look at the Urban Renaissance Agency and its properties (http://www.ur-net.go.jp). It is a recently independent agency (used to be a public corporation - ie run by the government) which provides housing. You don't pay key money, and will not be refused just because you are a foreigner. (which unfortunately does occur occasionally with private landlords)
I used to do flat share with foreigners.
We rented a big flat from an agency but only problem was someone needed to be the contractor that on one wants to be. Also, the person has to be financially rich enough to rent the property.
Deposit stuff was so annoying.
I found some of the flat mates in a website which also has information about room to let for foreigners, unfortunately i dont remember what website it was but if you go on google or yahoo etc then, type 'flat share', im sure you'll get some useful informations.
Good luck with your flat hunting!
for 100K~120K you are not going to find anything other than a 1K in central Tokyo. YOU might want to look in Kichijoji or Jiyugaoka or Nakano. Even in those areas, something bigger than a 1LDK might be tough. If you do find something in central Tokyo for that price, there is bound to be something wrong with it (old, not SRC, terrible nautral light etc.)
Ken might not have a lot of stuff out there...
Did you try 21st Century? They have a lot of stuff and if your company is the leasee, then you should have no problems....
