Hi All of us look for new interesting places to visit around Japan, but all the info we can get is what we get from guide books... I guess there are many more places which are interesting to visit. As foreigner in Japan, where is the most exciting place you have ever been to or you recommend for the new comer as tourist or long stay foreigners? And why?
I especially enjoy getting away from tourist areas and trying to see the real Japan. I would go for jogs in different directions and see wat I can find.
Much depends on how much Japanese you speak. It can be a lot of fun to get to know Japanese people and chat with them some.
Also finding local matsuris (festivals) can be a lot of fun. For example, when I was studying near Nagoya, I went one Sunday to a local hot spring town to soak a bit, but came across an interesting matsuri. Wrote about it in my Blog at http://peter-japan2005.blogspot.com/2005/10/gamagori-matsuri.html
Even most Japanese don't even know where Tenri is...
It's in the Nara Prefecture... If anyone is Familiar with the Religion called Tenri-Kyo, That city is there hometown..
Very wonderful Citys, Nothing to do, But it's great for Hiking and walking around..
Especialy Akita, Many mountains and lakes, Open Fields, Great for running and Hiking!!
Although, I also Enjoyed, Hiroshima, Tokyo, Kyouto, and Osaka.. Especialy Osaka and Tokyo, I dunno why, But, There is soooo much to do there... Espeicaly if your a fan of the Night Life, It's none stop partying.. =]
But being able to speak Japanese helped me out alot!!! It helped me make new friends during my time in Japan and explore places Non-Japanese speaks wouldn't be able to go..
Amanohashidate is pretty nice, and not so well known by most foreign tourists. I went there in the middle of summer several years ago with friends and really enjoyed it.
It's in North Kyoto prefecture and is one of the "3 famous views of Japan" along with Itsukushima Shrine (Hiroshima) and Matsushima Bay (Miyagi).
they are called Okayama International Villas.
there are five villas in total and open only to foreigners.
i used to visit them in summer holidays when i was liitle. (coz my mom is chinese)
this is HP...check it out:D

to my impression......
FUKIYA: beautiful streets
USHIMADO: great view from the top of the mountain
HATTOJI: beautiful rice fields and traditional houses
TAKEBE: dont remember much...but i guess its great as well as others, haha
SHIRAISHI ISLAND: the most busiest place of them. i liked the beach.
but all of them are very old and a loooooooooot of bugs crawling X(
also there are nothing around them, even people.
if you dont mind them, you are gonna enjoy your rural life for sure;)
Izu Hanto (in Shizuoka Pref.) is a nice area to explore i worked as a chef in a Ryokan there for a year. Why? well they have heaps of onsen towns spread around coast which are great to explore on foot or by car. Also there are plenty of little beaches that you can go to and the food around there is great.
KANAZAWA - Kenrokuen is an amazing garden and i can't remeber the name of the place but you can visit a Ninja's house that was amazing seeing all their escape routes its a must see.
KYOTO - Well the guide books should tell you why but the trick with Kyoto is to explore because some of my favorite places in Kyoto aren't in guide books. While your in Kyoto you might want to take a trip to Uji and see byodoin (its the temple on the 10yen coin) the whole area is beautiful especially in cherry blossum season.
Well i could go on all day about great places to visit in Japan but i'll leave it at those three.
