Ok so within the past few months, there have been swarm of topics dealing with relationships, girl probs and guy probs. Out of curiosity, what is your take on these? Just like what do you think about it? Should there be a community for these types of problems but in Just English, or keep it to just here. Random thoughts are ok too.

If you ask me, it would be ideal to have a community where you can talk specifically about relationships and girls/guys stuff. That would work for everyone. If you want to be part of it, all you have to do would be join the community. If not, you wouldn't have to crawl through all the topics to find the ones you _are_ interested in. :)
Sometimes I think people rely too much on the opinions of strangers by asking personal questions online. I mean, I can understand that they just want to talk to someone, but we don't know either of the parties (unless they're friends offline or something) so to take advice from strangers on such personal matters seems a bit irresponsible to me.

But I do agree that having a community solely dedicated to relationship problems will help because then, people like me, who aren't on mixi to listen to other people's problems, don't have to read them. (And yes, I have a choice to read them or not, but it's tempting to read new posts when it's right there in front of me.)
I'm generally not in favor of splitting communities - it has unintended effects. I help run my company's forums as well and I always have to fight against the mentality of creating too many communities.

The problem is you might get a lot of these relationship topics, but a lot of those same people participate in the other topics here. Splitting off relationships into their own community will mean a lot of those people will just leave this community (maybe not formally, but they just won't visit very often). What usually happens when you split communities into topics like that is you end up with a community that's now devoted solely to one topic and gets most of the traffic, and the former freeform community that now ends up basically dead.

I've probably pretty much used up the entertainment value of these relationship topics for myself, but if it means more people in this group, I don't think there should be another community just for them. I think this should stay as an anything-goes community, where anybody can write about anything in English. Once you start forcing people to go to other communities to write about certain things, they will just go to those communities and you just end up with a bunch of small communities of people talking about specific subjects and nobody really talking to each other.
Hi Jeff.

One of the pros of splitting communities is that if you want to talk about and/or need information on a particular topic, you will be able to go directly to the community designed for the topic. You probably agree with it.

As for your concern, I personally don't think having smaller, special-purpose communities will cause this community to die down. True, some people may leave because they're not interested in "general talk," but I'd reckon the number would be small compared to that of those who enjoy talking about general stuff here.

I participate in a few online forums. All of them have an "off-topic" section, where you talk about things not related to the topics the forum is designed for. Interestingly, the off-topic section is often the most active. :)
Im one of the people sick of reading relationship stuff too. we have only a few things to be suggested about relationship because it is a personal, in other word, unique matter to oneself. also, things you learned from your relationship history are not always working for others. it may be working for yourself but maybe not for others. because everyone is different.
maybe we dont need split the community but you can have a new topic just for relationship matters. or if you want to tell everyone about your relationship, post it on your own mixi diary.
yeah, i understand there's some truth in what jeff said, but honestely, im tired of that topic...

maybe we can post more topics that are much more exciting than those girls-guys relationship topics ;P
hmm....i cant come up with any good topics though...
Who cares! The people who are complaining aren't really creating interesting topics either. Don't read it if you don't like it. Just go on to the next topic or something...
I think that's the real point - we haven't been having other types of interesting topics lately, thus the relationship and sex threads have popped up. Sex is always on people's minds, so it's an easy out when looking for a topic to start... ;)
>Ok so within the past few months

ever since I started mixi, we've been having the same conversation over and over and over and over again here....
it used to be more fun though because we had people like "chilli-fresh" to say something completely ridiculous.....

But seriously, in the past we had loads of interesting topics that die out at like comment#20...
Whereas the English Teacher/Japanese Girls/What's the difference between Japan and any country that isn't called Japan threads just go on on and on

I think that means people aren't even interested in interesting things.
If that makes sense

Or is interesting to anyone
I guess people are interested in relationships/sex/girls/etc because that stuff does sell. Well I think that these things are interesting to many people because we are exposed to these things on a daily basis, socially, through media, etc. This causes us maybe to just relate with everyone on some plane or another. Ya リラックミル is correct by saying "you don't have to read it" which is true. It is just an option to read it in the first place. Ya I'm just trying to sprak some discussion or somethin. haha
↑...
I liked the threads you created!
different from those "popular" topics here threfore "unpopular"...??

yea when I joined this community many moons ago, it's already included relatively a lot of loop conversations.(though there're interesting topics every now and then that's why I'm still a member.)
It's really annoying to see the same old stuff always get to the top as I have nothing in common, no interest whatsoever in the English Teacher/Japanese Girls etc. (Entertaining though, sometimes...)
All I can do is just give em a miss...
I guess it's not a bad idea to split communities according to people's interest. neurotic singletons' refuge or summat...
No need to split the community. Unpopular threads will just die from a lack of interest/responses. Keep it flexible. The plus is having a wide variety of opinions on any certain topic.
I found the ladies prospective on some sex related topics very educational. They tell you things from their hearts that might never be said otherwise.
11> cheers!

p/s on the magazine tip, I'm really into that one "Purple" right now, do you know it!? It's like an upmarket i-D
hiya ...

Is the pope catholic?
Haha.. course I'm aware of "Purple" and like it too!
I like its sophisticated image... quality paper and poetic words...Does the name come from purple prose?
Anyway, I actually went to their shop in Paris years ago. That was cool, as you would expect, but when I went back again a few years later the shop had gone. Dunno what happened. Shame.
(Does anyone in Paris know if it's moved out or closed down??)

Also, ..., you were on about VICE mag before weren't you? I did an ad for VICE recently so I like it... As for other publications, I often buy "Creative Review" and "Grafik". They're pretty good, hands on info, no pretence.

Sorry, OP! for hijacking the thread.

Now then, ignore us and carry on...
mornin' ティキ,
(yeah last quick thingy then I'll get out of everyone's hair here...)
It's funny you mentioned Grafik, because I had a friend who used to work for i-D, and is now at Grafik! Haven't managed to get around to reading it yet though....I find you can get most of the good design news at "newstoday" online, so that saves me buying expensive foreign mags over here.
Anyway yeah Purple is great....they had a piece on that dude Juergen Teller, who I like....
and absolutely no connection but I got a really nice book set by a guy called Henry Wessel too.

Sorry again to the OP....

(see what we could be talking about on here)
awright ...,

checked out the site. tis brilliant! Looks so handy as I'm also on my job hunting mission now... thanks a lot!!
Yeah foreign mags are well over priced aren't they. (I used to get my company to subscribe pricey ones...)
When I'm in Japan, I like domestic -therefore less expensive- titles such as;
+81
アイデア
MdN (bit nerdy but loads of great tips)
There're loads more excellent -random- publications in Tokyo! I guess.

Well, nice to talk to ya.
Catch you soon... (feel free to drop me a line if you like so we don't do their head in here...)
Again, apologies for our derailroaded track...
