Ozawa recently created his very own political party to compete with the DPJ. What effect do you think this will have? Will this serve only to slow decision making and frustrate government?
I disagree with this simply being about consumption tax. Ozawa is an opportunistic character who's leveraging the nation's nuclear fears and worries about taxes in order to gain power and influence. As Kei notes, he has yet to say anything of true substance or provide anything actionable. It's quite easy to criticize the way things are going; it takes courage to change the current situation into something new. Ozawa seems intent on keeping things the way they are, minus nuclear power. Instead of trying to work together with other politicians, he is polarizing the Diet and by creating his own party ("国民の生活は第一" -- seriously?! More like 小沢の生活・辞職第一") he is introducing further dissent into the Japanese political machine. His stance: If the Diet members are always arguing and disagreeing with each other's plans, others' ideas will not be passed. His might not either, but as long as his opponents' can do nothing, he can continue his campaign of purporting to put the public first, then appeal to the public when his agenda doesn't move forward. And just like Newt Gingrich, he grabs power and acts like a spoiled child when things don't go his way. Do we really want to live in a myopic, Ozawa-fashioned Japan?
