Are you looking to start an Apple-Android flame war?
I have the Toshiba Regza IS04 and I love it, but I can't say that it's the best because I don't have any other phones to really compare it with. I sparingly use the first model iphone for work, but I don't really use it enough to form an honest opinion about it. I just got back from a short trip to the US, and of the people that had smartphones, I saw most people using HTC model phones or iphones.
Lol--not exactly. I'm genuinely interested.
Personally, I have the iPhone 4 and am quite disappointed in it. It has a sexy slim profile and amazing display, true, but its camera is horrendous, doesn't come bundled with software practical for Japan (hello, QR reader?), and typing in Japanese is amazingly frustrating. But it's sexy.
HTCs in the States really captivated me. Hardly sexy slim, but had removable memory and roomfor growth. The new au and DoCoMo sets here are impressive--oh and they have contactless payment options, better battery life, and are market-tailored. Too bad they don't have Otousan prices.

Some Xperia model smartphones are already on sale through docomo, and from what I can tell there is still no official word on which Japanese carrier will get the Xperia Play. If you can read Japanese, keep an eye on this community:
