Do you have a secret place where you go to escape the pressures of the world? It might be the beach, the garden, a room in your house or it could even be a coffee shop or a park. Maybe you go into retreat at a Buddhist temple, or it might even be something like you listen to your iPod and zone out.
Where do you go when you need a time out, a place to think or just a bit of quiet?
It can be anywhere for me. I try and take some time everyday to switch off and relax. My ipod helps a lot. It's not unusual to see me dancing a bit when I wait for the train...
I also love to hide in the future. Thinking about my upcoming plans is also great.
Finally, I recently started playing basketball. When I play, I don't think about work, love, money or stress. Just about passing the ball, who is open and getting points. At the pace I play at there's no room for anything else.
I do as well. Somewhere around 5 years ago, there was a fad making its way around Japan, in which people would go to out-of-the-way train stations in the greater Tokyo area (the sorts of stations where the train comes around only once an hour or so), and either sit down and have a think, have a chat with others, or explore around the station area. To some, it's a nonsense way of finding peace; I, for one, found it oddly soothing to sit along the tracks, watch the clouds drift by, and listen to the sounds of the area.
Kamakura's always been one of my favorite places otherwise--as has the "rural" parts of the Boso-hanto (like along the eastern shoreline). Quiet, out-of-the-way, and a peaceful place to take a folding bike and meander about.
It might sound a little strange to some people, but I love going to the country side and listening to the sound of minmin cicada's (ミンミン蝉) singing. It even works for me if I'm in the city and there's no other sounds around at the time the cicada is singing.
I guess escape from stressful day to her mind, it means escape to delusion in her mind. In this point, it is not real world.
I understood what she is thinking.
In the case of me, I go to sport club and swim so I could refreshing from stressful days.
And meditation also would be good method.
Everybody has some place to let loose. To me, Mixi is the one, and another will be a bookstore.
Especially here in Los Angeles, I will go to the Japanese book store and Book-off. I just look for something new about Japan and try sneak-reading for a couple of hours. It makes me relax and I forget I am in the USA. It may be nostaligic.

A lot of bookstores in Australia (I think it's the same in the U.S., but not
Japan) now have kissaten within the shop and they allow customers to
sit down and read a book they have taken off the shelves. I guess they
need to buy coffee and maybe a cake....and then another coffee so it
probably pays for itself that way.
Maybe it wouldn't work in Japan because they would need a large area
just to accommodate all the otaku reading manga. What do you think
of audio-books? I was a big reader a few years ago but lately I've been
so busy that I've had to change the way I do things. Most of the books
I have bought in the last 6 months have been from i-Tunes and I listen
to them while I drive.
Swimming in the gym, followed by sitting in the sauna and then in the jacuzzi... that's my "secret garden" these days. I also take my car out for a spin when I'm stressed out. I don't blast through the twisty roads like I used to, but just cruising on an open road with the window down helps me let loose.
We can enjoy reading books and drinking coffee in the book store, too. Sometimes you don't need to order anything. That's an advantage in USA. However, most of people drink a cup of coffee and read a lots of books. It is good in Summer for cool down yourself, and in winter to make you warm. I used to hear the audio books in my drivings. But now I live in the down town LA and not to need drive so often. Paper books make me more imagination.
