Hi there手(パー)
I'm just wondering when I was a junior high school student, I learned when you see a person first time, what you say was "How do you do?"
but since I've seen some American people, they say "Nice to meet you."at the first time.

If I use "how do you do " in the U.S, is it too formal? or funny?
even if I say "Nice to meet you "in Britain, is it normal?
How about in Australia?

I just want to know, what do you say to the first meeting person.
Don't say just "hi".

I've lived in the U.S. for 20 years. I've probably only heard people greet one another saying "How do you do" a couple of times.

As far as I know, it is a lot more common to say "Hi, my name is Tom. Very nice to meet you," although I don't think saying "How do you do?" is considered weird. Too formal? Maybe.
I think "nice to meet you" is normal in most English speaking countries, In Australia we also say "hows it going"I guess its kinda informal though.
hello だいはどsan and ケインsan

Thank you very much for quick responseわーい(嬉しい顔)
very very interesting and good to know!
I wonder, still they are saying "how do you do?"is greeting for the first meeting in the school. because I learned very long time ago.I hope they changed.
I learned. thank you指でOK
I'm from NZ. I've probably used "how do you do?" a few times but usually it's "How are you doing?"
Though said in speech it's more like "How ya doin'?"or "How's it going?"
"What's happening?" or "Pleasure." are both suitable in casual situations as well.

A couple weeks ago one of the teachers at my JHS tried to tell the kids that "Nice to meet you." can be used the 2nd or 3rd time you meet someone.

Me: "No... that's when you meet someone for the first time only."
Him: "But what about 'It's good to see you again"?
Me: "...that's a different sentence."
Him: "What?"
Me: *writes the two sentences on the board* "Can you see how those are different?"
Him: "..."

I fear for those kids. They're all pretty smart but their teacher probably needs to re-enroll がまん顔
the movie above is far-out!

I was in NZ for 3+years and as far as I remember 'It's lovely to see you.' 'It's nice to meet you.' are often used for the greetings for the first time.
Then, when you finish talking with the person, you can say 'It was nice meeting you.''It was good seeing you.'
To see is used for the future (now), and seeing is for the past.
I usually just say;

"Hello, how are you?"

depending on the situation I might say things like;

"How do?"
"Are you happy?" (I think I'm the only person who says this)
"How's life?"
"What do you do for fun?" (I think I'm the only person who says this)

I ask a lot of stupid questions....mainly because I don't like saying the
cliches that are often said.

Thank you very much for response指でOK.
I see what you say first greeting is depend on the situation.
So many way to say!! Surprised.I should keep them in my mind. No,should be into my brainふらふら

I have one more questionげっそり.
If you say, "how do you do"is too formal, who do you say the words to.
so curious. could be a presidentexclamation & questionsorry.
>I see what you say first greeting is depend on the situation.
I think it depends more on the person than the situation.

>> If you say, "how do you do"is too formal, who do you say the words to.
>> so curious. could be a president

That may be a situation where using "How do you do" may be more appropriate. I would probably say something like "It is an honor to meet you, Mr. President.".
>> If you say, "how do you do"is too formal,

To me "How do you do?" does sound very formal....I might say it to people
I know well as a joke but not to someone I just met. I often say "How do?"
which is short for "How do you do?"
....actually I've started saying "ohikaenasutte" to Japanese people I
know. I think it's kind of funny coming from a foreigner. Maybe I
should buy a white suit and a red tie.

One of the good things about being a non-native speaker of a language
is you can say things you shouldn't really say. People who would
normally tell you to "get lost" will take it upon themselves to help
you.
I am shocked. I just erased my comment. wow....sad.

Thank you very much for your comments.
I should kick out "how do you do "from my head. thank you

I go to foreign languase school, so I have much opportunity to meet many foreigners from various countries.

Some people say “Nice to meet you!" ,and others say “ How do you do?" but it's rare in this case.

Almost all people say “Nice to meet you!" ,maybe I think.わーい(嬉しい顔)
You wanna sound gangsta ?

What's poppin ?
What it Do ?
What's crack-a-lackin ?
well, i think most of the people in the US usually say "Nice to meet you" at the first meeting, for me also. I have not heard anybody say "How do you do"
At the time of formal situation, I always say ``It is my great pleasrue to see you`` or ``pleasure see you``.
