The Sirius Star became the biggest ship ever hijacked on Saturday when Somali pirates seized it 450 miles southeast of Mombasa.
I can`t understand why they don`t use a fraction of all the money they are paying out in Ransoms to place a small but large enough security force on the tankers that have to sail into the pirates attack zones. They have civilian security personal in the middle east already so why can`t they just place some more on the ships. I am sure it would cost a lot less than all the money they have paid out and will pay out in the future if they just keep letting these pirates hi jack ships every week. Prevent them from boarding the vessels in the first place. All the hi tech equipment that is available today you can`t tell me they can`t stop a handful of sandal wearing pirates from crippling the shipping industry in that area. The more money they pay them, the better the equipment they can purchase to attack the next tanker. When is this bullshi* going to stop?
the pirates have good technology and plan attacks very well, they strike very effectively. But heres an idea, maybe companies in Europe and Asia should stop dumping toxic wastes on their beaches, if they did that and tried to clean it up then the pirates would be less likely to attack... after all the pirates claim the dumping of waste products in their country at pathetically cheap prices for the last decade is the reason why they are pirating.
just think about it, these pirates took over a ship that is 4 times larger than a US aircraft carrier, these guys aren't some stupid black dudes on small sail boats... they are modern hi tech pirates who aren't easily to defeat.
ok firstly, the reason why they don't put armies of people on these tankers is because it would be a nightmare to go to different countries and have to declare weapons all the time, and clear them and show them etc... it wouldn't make sense
however they are thinking of putting sonar technology on the bigger boats that makes any human throw up and shit themselves if they get within 500 metres of the sonar sound

i hardly think the pirates would think ''no lads, we better let this ship through, they cleaned our beaches last month and now they have Eco friendly bio fuel engines....so they're green....we'll let this potential gold mine slip by this time'' GET REAL THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT POLLUTION, as long as the companies keep paying the ransoms, they will continue and get bigger. They even think now that they are paying mercenaries to do the job because now it's getting to become toooo professional.
Simple solution
Stop everything going in and out of Somalia, then put a contraception in the water supply. It might take 40-50 years for the country to die off....but at least then we have a new potential Las Vegas
oh by the way, Al Qaeda are working with them now as well......it'll be the next hot spot for Nata/UN
I was surprised by hearing this news because it happened in the area other than Somali coast and gulf of Aden in which area Somali pirates attack usually happenes. Somali pirates are expanding their teritory so much...This ship took the route of going not through suez canal and red sea, but all the way around African continent to avoid the pirates. But attacked...
I heard that some Japanese ships prepare 1 million yen in advance to pay for the pirates if attacked. They say it's cheaper than hiring armed security. It's very reasonable idea but not good idea.
Arming the ships would act as a deterrent. A .50 machine gun when it's
being fired in your direction scares the hell out of you. All of a sudden
you realise that very thick wall you are standing behind isn't all that thick.
But if push comes to shove and they start firing RPGs things could get
very nasty for the environment.
I think there are about 10 war ships from various countries off the coast
of Somalia but it really is the old finger in the dike. The real answer is
local policing in Somalia and money to the coastal towns where piracy
is rooted.
I read somewhere that the ransoms paid was the biggest source of foreign
currency in Somalia.
The Pirates are holding out in Somalia the same way Al Qaeda is hiding out in Afghanistan. If they can justify going into Afghanistan after Al Qaeda why can`t they go into Somalia or at least put more pressure on that government to control their Pirates. And I don`t think it would be a problem with the weapons if each tanker had their own mercenaries on board. If all the crews of the merchant vessels refused to service that area they would do something quick. It might not be too far fetched to believe that some bad people in the shipping industry are working with the Pirates and getting kick back.
That Hi tech sonar weapon would probably harm the whales.... so they need to be sure it`s safe for the wildlife first.
The hostages are apparently treated very well by the pirates.
I think they realise it isn't in their interest to have dead sailors
splashed across the front page of the Washington Post.
I think there are some subtleties to this issue that make an
international armed response within Somalia a bad idea. For
one thing the Somali government recognise the problem. They
are not equipped to deal with it and they have other things on their
plate but they are doing their best.

the pirates have stated that the toxic pollution in somalia is the reason why they are pirating. whether thats just an excuse or not i dont know... it may have been the initial reason and changed slowly over time as profits started to rise. Either way when companies go around the world screwing over poor countries is it any surprise that pirates, terrorists and anti western sentiment grows and causes problems like this...
i have no doubt that if the waste stopped being dumped in somalia then another country would fall victim. the world is screwed up..im sure preventing things like this instead of bandaiding them after the damage has been done would be much better.., however humans dont work that way, we react only when it matters to us...
The worlds policeman America can not do much reason being there is not anything worth value ( read crude oil ) in Somalia and as if thats not enough you remember what happened to them in the mid 90s ( read Black Hawk Down)
They and their NATO counter parts see it as an African prob and should be solved the African way.
Whatever happened to AfRICOM !! Instead they are just training the the
presidential Guard Brigade in Uganda so as to keep the Dictator Museveni in Power.
Wish i could throw some few drops crude oil around the horn of Africa
and see the reaction ^^
I think that the shipping companies are not stupid and they weigh the risks and costs of each decision they make. Having a mercenary force on each tanker every time must cost a fortune. The chances of a hijacking of a tanker must be quite minimal, it is a black swan event. So you do the math, and say what is the probability of a tanker being hijacked * the ransom you pay each time versus the run rate of having a team of mercenaries on each tanker. The company probably figured that the probability of being hijacked was quite low.
sorry the pain piracy might cause, however I felt happy when I saw the news. There is still adventure and liberty even with thousand sattelites rotating day and night around earth.
#9 You would think that would be the case but with so many ships (17) being hi jacked Mercenaries must be more cost effective. How much could a small armed patrol cost? Or some of the hi tech non lethal options. The Ocean is a very large area and equally difficult for both the Pirates and the Tankers to play cat and mouse in. Too large to be patrolled by security vessels. They can see the mother ships the pirates work from and they need to round those up even if they are anchored within Somali territory. There are a dozen mother ships that they know of. They are holding 17 ships with 32 crew members as of today. They are arguing over rules of engagement.
The Ships/Tankers need to take care of their own security. The Ransoms must stop being
paid out. And it`s time to play hard ball and take off the gloves. There is no excuse for
hi jacking.
There are usually a few weapons on merchant ships. They tend to be side arms
or maybe a few semi-automatic rifles. One of the issues is the pirates are armed
with a range of weapons which include RPGs. If things get nasty and a few of
those get punched into the side of your very expensive tanker you might start
wishing you just paid the ransom.
Supposed the probability of being hijacked in this area is 1%, security cost should be less than 5000 USD for 1 ship to pay off. And some ransom might be paid by insurance company, so the amount should be more cheaper.
So, if their security cost is more than 5000 USD for 1 ship, being hijacked and paying ransom would cost cheaper than hiring the security to all ships passing this area for ship company. And pirates don't hurt and do good to the crew, The only issue the ship company should consider is only the money issue.
Ship companies won't never hire the security under this environment. This is the task of UN and countries and Somalia itself. But so far there is no central government in Somalia, UN must act.
I am in the wrong business... I should be hi jacking ships off the coast of Somalia. It`s a messed up world when you can justify paying the hi jackers like that. Why don`t they just pay them in advance and save everyone a lot of time. Call it Somalia area Tax. Just include it in the budget. WTF!
>> I am in the wrong business... I should be hi jacking
>> ships off the coast of Somalia. It`s a messed up
>> world when you can justify paying the hi jackers
>> like that.
It is a messed up world. Obviously what they are doing
is wrong, but I would say that what Israel is doing in the
occupied territories is equally reprehensible. Maybe
the reason the world is so messed up is we have good
reprehensible and bad reprehensible.
So when the Mujahideen are fighting the Russians they
are good, when they are fighting the Americans they are
bad (truth is they have always repressed women and killed
anyone who stood in their way).
When Saddam Hussein is fighting our proxy war against
Iran he is good, when he turns all those guns we gave him
against us he is bad.
On some levels I feel a little sympathy for the Africans
in cases like this. They have been screwed over again and
again by the developed world. Our governments gave
corrupt governments in Africa massive loans in the 1960s
and 1970s. We knew the money was never going to be used
to benefit the people. Fast forward 30 years and we refuse to
forgive those loans we were negligent in giving... I
would add the initial loan has been repaid many times
over.
Now those people who are dirt poor because we made
them dirt poor are using the guns we gave them against
us and we cry foul.
I could feel for them and understand a bit more if they actually made some solid demands that could be met to solve this problem. Their problems are internal. Someone in their government agreed to accept the the terms offered by the wealthy governments concerning all the issues they have problems with now. How does hi jacking effect those that caused the problems, when ransom money is being shared with some section of the renegade government. For them it`s just
another day at the office.
