Following on from the "your favorite food n recipes" thread,
I wonder if you can come up with a decent (costed) meal for
2 for under $5.00.
I think University Students are masters at eating cheap but
I'd be interested if anyone else can come up with novel ideas
(no stealing....but taking complimentary items from restaurants
is OK).

5 bucksFor 2 ? that's around say ... 600 yen

can only think of Yoshinoya
I grow my own vegetables and some fruit (including Nira (garlic chives), chilli, tomatos, basil, strawberries, etc...).

That helps with the food bills.
Onion egg:

1 or 2 onions, 4 or 6 eggs

slice the onion and put them on the pan. put the eggs on top. That's all.

Eat with some toasted bread. Coffee and ice cream for dessert.

It's about 5 bucks, i guess.

Onion egg tastes great.
BTW, my food budget for two people for one week is AU$30.
That is 41 meals for $30. Or about $1.36 per meal.
That is well under your budget.
BTW, some useful tips might be to:

1. Find out if you have a local farmer's market, where farmers sell direct to the public. They are almost always the best way to get cheap and totallly fresh vegetables.
2. We always look around all your supermarkets (and check the flyers in the newspaper if you have them) for the cheapest prices. I know it is boring, but you can save alot of mnoney this way. Sometimes you can save a few dollars by looking around - it is only $2 but it all adds up.
3. Always buy in bulk (as much as possible and where it is appropriate).
4. Have a simple menu. Usually we eat cha-han (fried rice) or pasta or noodles.
5. Get to know and befriend your local farmers, so can get cheap vegetables or rice from them.
There is a super cheap Ramen Noodle restaurant in Japan.
1 bowl of ramen noodle :180yen!!ウッシッシ
workmx, I don't know how you do it. Do you eat well? I mean do you eat fruit and
vegetables for that money, or just processed foods?
600en is actually quite a lot in Japan. I used to get karee raisu for 320en at this
little shop on the north side of Kyoto (on Marunochi)....that's quite cheap. And
you can always get omurai or raamen on the cheap.
It's interesting. In some ways Japan is much cheaper than Australia. To get
a decent meal that is cooked for you in Australia you'd be lucky to pay less
than $20. Even takeout Chinese lunch box will cost $10 or $11.
1 can of Italian Tomato costs about 1 dollar,
plus 1 pound of pasta costs about 2.
With some salt, red chili ,pepper and olive oil, you can make 2-3
dishes of delicious pasta.

We don't eat any processed food at all.
Just fresh fruit and vegetables, plus pasta and rice.
We eat very little meat, most of our protein c\comes from fish or tofu.
We are luucky because my father-in-law is a farmer.
So we can get rice for free.
How about Hanamaru-Udon??
It's low-price fast food Udon restaurant.
Middle size of KAKE-UDON (only noodle and soup) is 215 yen.

Udon and Soba stand in the every station is also similar.
But at least you need to buy some train ticket to access..
