Normally I have a good sense of humor for funny adds. But the Emobile add featuring the Obama campaign image is in very poor taste and demonstrates a considerable amount of ignorance on the part of the company and advertising firm about the implied meaning.
Anyone who knows even a little about US history knows that African Americans have long been the victims of racism. One of the common racist statements was to refer to African Americans as "monkeys." It has often been used to dehumanize Blacks and is still a very offensive remark to make.
Senator Obama's portrayal as a monkey in this advertisement reminds us of those racist remarks. While I am sure they intended to just be funny, for many this has very strong racist overtones and is offensive to both African Americans and to Americans in general.
I hope that Emobile's leaders have just made a serious error in judgement and that they are not actually racists. But the fact remains that this add is in very poor taste and does demonstrate considerable ignorance of racism and the implied meaning in their add.
Emobile should immediately pull these adds and issue a a public apology. They should explain their intent and assure the public that their intent was not to offend.
