hi there. it is my first time to make a new topic by myself.
i have something to ask people who teach english in japan.
my fiance is scottish and he wants to move japan because i'm in nara now. so he needs to find a job in here.
he's british, so i think teaching english is the best for him.
but there is a problem.
he doesnt have a university degree, so we consider it might be difficult for him to get a teaching job.
now he works in the factory as a manager for 5years.
he's once come to japan and he loved it.
do you know any companies which can give him a working visa and a teaching job?
i think there are so many ex nova teachers who are looking jobs now.
do you think its hard to get a job now?
he wants a job around kansai area, nara or osaka or kyoto are nice place for me.
thanks for reading.

It is insanely difficult to get a teaching job without a degree. NOVA allowed individuals from some countries (eg. Canada) to work on a working holiday visa for a short amount of time, but they won't give a working visa without proper qualifications.

Maybe he could look for a job transfer? Some jobs in North America (I don't know about UK) allow management to transfer to places where they have another branch. Costco allows it for management positions.

Suggest to him that he looks for a job that can transfer him in maybe a year or so, or if he is interested, maybe he can get a degree for teaching English?

Another suggestion would be for him to apply to study in Japan and work on the side as a student. It would be easier for him to search for employment while there and if he picks up some language skills (providing he isn't fluent in Japanese. Sorry, I'm just making an assumption).

There are many job posting for teachers (almost all require a university degree) that want someone who is currently living in Japan.

I hope this is helpful. Moving to a new country to work isn't easy, but if you do it the proper and legal way and work out the details, it will be worthwhile.
It is really hard in general to get any job in japan that sponsors visas without a BA minimum. I have some friends who teach english and they don't have a degree but none of those places sponsor visas. Another option could be to go to university in Japan if he is interested in that.
I think it would be very difficult to find an English teaching job anytime soon. Mainly due to the NOVA problems -- which has resulted in many experienced teachers looking for work, and a smaller number of job openings.
First time to put comments here,,, living in Japan would be difficult as a foreigner.
I can imagine from my situation. Even though, like here in US, those language schools require at least BA to be a language teacher, certainly he could hold student status (if interested) and start up his career as a private english tutor. Demand for English teacher is still remarkable and it does make loads of earnings. Craigslist Tokyo is useful for people seeking teaching jobs. I am not sure Craigslist for Kansai area is being updated or not. but it's worth checking up. Hope that there is an ideal way for you two. gooooood luck!
If you guys get married obtaining a work visa shouldn't be a problem, right?
Yeah, get married and obtain a spousal visa, that's the easiest cuz he does need BA degree....
Hello Martina,
I'm teaching English to kids(0-year-old〜junior high school stds).
There are Japanese teachers and Foreign teachers, and they do lessons in pairs.
My company doesn't really mind which country u r from(as long as u speak English) or if u have university degree.
If u r interested,I'll tell u about my company more. Plz send me a message.
good luck^ ^
thanks a lot everyone^^
i told him that its very difficult for him to live and work in japan.
we're going to get married next March(hopefully) so he can get a visa in japan as well. but even if he could get a visa, we can't survive in japan without his job.
maybe we should look at the way to live in scotland.
thanks again for your helpful comments.
