☆ENGLISH ONLY☆コミュのWhy we need gods

We are at the top when it comes to life. We have dominated not only other species of life, but our habitats as well. We change everything to suit us. We have non competition when it comes to dominance.

Sure, some animals are stronger than us. Some have claws, some have fangs. Sure, insects adapt and mutate at an alarming rate. They also vastly outnumber us. But we are still on top.

So, as the strongest of all the species on our planet, who will we strive against?

This is something I have been thinking about for a while. Why do we need gods? Well, a short answer, we need something to strive against. At the top, the only thing we could strive against would be something better, yet one doesn't exist. Create a god, and all of a sudden we are incredibly inferior against divination. Yet what do we do in modern society? We try to figure everything out. We are not satisfied with being on top. We aren't satisfied with just mass domination, no, we want to know all the intricate details of absolutely everything. We want to create as our fictional gods do, we want to be even better. Our fictional gods make mistakes in their stories. They have heirarchical governments as we do, such as the angels in heaven and the gods on Mt. Olympus.

Most people also need something to believe in because they refuse to believe in an end to their existence. It is a crutch for them, to hold their fear in check.

Still, I find the first idea very intriguing. Imagine what would happen when you achieve something only a god could do... imagine the fame you'd garner. You'd have become or surpassed a god, and what man doesn't want that?

I wish there was karma or something for this post. I agree with it.

That, and people need something to believe in. We need something to look up to.
That brings up another point. Because of religion, we have trained ourselves on a public level to believe we are inferior. Inferior to what, exactly? Fictional gods? Why should we live thinking this way? Be god fearing people? Its time we take the reigns in our own hands, and stop relying on fictional gods. Its not good to truly believe we are filthy and inferior, full of sin. To believe we are nothing but insignificant animals. We have significance, and we are at the top. I don't understand that kind of thinking.

Even if you prove gods don't exist, you will still have people striving to surpass what we created in the stories.
We might not be inferior beings, but people need something to make them feel like there is something to look forward to after they die. Religion is something that gives people a peace of mind. People want to feel as if their lives have purpose - that they aren't living life in vain just to die and rot. That's an extremely bleak outlook, and a lot more people would be apathetic about everything if it was proven that there isn't an afterlife.
We need gods in case aliens come who are stronger than we are. We can teach them all about how they must be meek in order to reach heaven safely, then we'll take all their ray-guns.
I don't need gods anymore than I need Paul Bunyan or Santa Clause.
Fenomas - I'm getting this mental image that pretty much has me in tears from laughing.

Alien: "Puts up Ray-gun to Pat Robertson's head."
Pat Robertson: "Jesus...is...gonna...get you!"
Amber, many people are brainwashed into believing they are inferior to some silly god and then they live their life thinking they're some sort of servant to a god when in fact we are on the very top.

Fenomas, what if the aliens have bigger gods than us?
That's not the case with all religions. I know it tends to be with Christianity, more often than not, but I am aware that there are many other religions that don't teach people that they're worthless and inferior.
People are religious simply because they fear death.
M I think you should rename it to "why were gods invented" and the answers are pretty simple.

The first one being that the humans in power long ago needed something to scare the people under them into believing so that they could brainwash the populations of the planet into doing pretty much what those in power wanted, because there was alot of thing people did not understand in those times, it is quite easy to understand why people back then were easily influenced by this, what is not easy to understand is why people still do!Where it becomes even more comedy is how some people back then were so good with words that they were able to convince the extra special stupid people into thinking that even some humans were gods!

Although some of it has been said, something alot of people are not able to do is look at their self and find their faults and problems that can affect their happiness on earth, it is quite a feat to tear down your own armor and take a good wiff, we are rank and moldy inside and that is something people would find hard to look at and accept, this is also because of mans ego. So instead people turn to whatever religion suits their needs or wants and they cling to these....hopes or philosophies ( and in some cases brainwashed into them since birth by brainwashed parents in turn ) because it gives people a sense of being part of something and something to rely on other than themselves or their own responsibilities.

Now I am not going to target anyone or put anyone down for what they choose to believe in, that is everyones right, but at the same time it is far easier to cling to something that makes you feel good, especially if you suffer a great emotional loss and if that works for people hey great, the problem is that looking back at history and wars etc, the heart of hatred and the cause of much violence ends up being religion, because everyone who is a strong believer in their religion tends to think that theirs is the only one and so fighting or violence is ok....if it is for your religion or god,

We have zealots now and people who in many cases outright deny things that science can prove, there are people who deny certain medical treatments because of religion, seeing a loved one die because it goes against their belifies, we have people willing to trade their life for religion...or even condone and encourage their children to waste their life for complete shit, it is quite disgusting and pathetic really, but human beings are like this.

Personally, I believe man is their own god, that we are responsible for our actions here and now, if we want to experience something like a "heaven" then it is up to us and our actions to try and achieve that on earth. A hell ( in my opinion ) would possibly be someone who is self destructive, a junkie for example, who chooses to have no regard for their health and ends up turning into a disgusting wretch and then feels sorry for themselves that they are in such a situation, I guess that would be a good example of hell...of course their are exceptions, like someone being captured in war and being treated like a sub-human, in which case they are not really responsible for their situation, but they are in a way kinda because of the choice they made knowing they could end up like that.

When it comes to the concepts of say right or wrong or good and evil, I think there is no absolutes because of each persons perceptions of these things, that is not to say there is not universal evils, for example murder of innocent people would be in my mind a universal evil, I do believe that it is important for people to have...hmm...ethics and common sense. Topics like these are what religious people hate because it challenges their very foundation of hope and belief, it poses questions they do not want to be confronted with because they do not have the answers for them..
Trentyboi, I agree. Most people already talk about the fear of death. It is also a means to control the population. But those discussions are old already, I wanted to discuss something new. It is interesting, having our own competition be fictional.

However, often times people compete with others just because of shit talking. He said, she said. You know, nothing motivates people more than when they get shit talked.
