I usually try not to use an air-conditioner. In my place, I usually carry around a bottle of iced water like thisグッド(上向き矢印) It's not as comfy as the air-conditioned room though ほっとした顔. Primitive, isn't it?わーい(嬉しい顔)

I have never thought of the iced bottle thing. I am living in California, and the weather is not as bad as I have to use AC. Rather it tends to get cold during the night even summer time. I use candles insted of heater. I know candles can produce CO2 gas, but they save a large amount of electricity, too. That's my contribution to the environment, I guess.
It's my first comment here. I also have damn hot days without using air-conditioner. And I try not to fill bath tub with hot water during summer days.I only use shower.
It's efficient way to save money and for environment in terms of water scarcity.
i admit i had to use the airconditioner, even though it is expensive, especially recently as it has just been tooooo hot. However, I try to save both money and the environment through sleeping with a ice pillow (worth it!), drinking cold drinks and ice lollies, showering instead of bathing, opening windows, etc. air conditioner for me is the last resort.

i also heard on TV that sprinking water on the ground around where you live lowers the temperature. if you have a big(ish) electric fan and a bottle that can spray water, stand in front of the electric fan and spray water at it. the water will eventually hit you and it feels so refreshing. believe me, try it!
>ノブ san
Hi, ノブ san. Your comment is reminiscent of the days when I was in Canada. I used to live in Canada for a while and saw my roommates used candles while taking a bath and so forth. I miss that scene...むふっ

>JJ san
Hi, JJ san. Did you hear the news about today's highest temperature in Japan? It was 40.2 degree Celsiusがまん顔 I have heard that some countries are suffering from the flood. On the other hand, the country like Australia has some water shortage problem due to the drought. Hmmm...what's going on..?

>Sarah san
Hi, Sarah san. I understand that it's quite hot晴れ without the air-conditioner. I checked the youtube video you mentioned. Some people give first priority to economic growth unfortunately..., but wow, those kids are super!
Hey I'm very impressed to know that lot of us are not using the air-condition. I don't use myself and I say to my friends not to use too. But they can’t. They stopped only when I go there home.

Don't you think that all mechanically developed cities are built with a plan to use air-conditions in there rooms? So we don't have sufficient windows at our rooms and even we have windows the wind don't come through our windows as the city is not planned to pass the wind through our windows and buildings.

We may plan our new cities with the idea of not using air-condition, not using much electricity and not using things that harm us and our nature. That would be the real modern city, I think.

Thank you きぃ〜まお-san and everyone.I'm a man from a country that suffreing from flood.

A poem about flood.

>カレコラ san
Year, I agree, it's too hot to give up the airconditioner! Right, i completely forgot about the electric fan, good idea. How about hanging a bunch of ice cubes in front of the electric fan..., nope?!わーい(嬉しい顔)
I am quite economical.
I don't use lights in the first place here in my house.
A candle light is all I've got!
My contribution to the environment, furthering the research of bio-methane gas as a transportation gas and energy source. Besides we are taking cow poop and turning it into a useful source of energy. Taking a gas thats 26 times worse than CO2 and breaking it down to small amounts of CO2 and H20. Currently working with a small company in the Philippines who uses pig poop as a way to power homes. Free waste, free energy... 手(チョキ)
> SHIPU san
I hope your people including your family in your country will be safe. Not all of them, but some of Japanese apartments/flats are tightly built. I know some friends live in an apartment:when they open one of the windows, we see there is the wall of the next building. Apparently, no wind comes in...冷や汗

I'm not quite sure whether or not the airconditioner has been furnished or you have to newly buy it. Maybe it depends on landlords' discretion?
>在印Korean san
Wow, you sound indeed economical!

>アンソニー san
That's interesting, Biomass, eh? I hope your study will be productive and successful then指でOK
Let's see, what do I do for the environment?

1. We use energy-saving fluorescent lights in our home. Even in the garage. :)

2. Our washer/drier are "certified" energy-saving models. No idea who certifies it, though. LOL

3. We do have air-conditioning at home, but we hardly ever use it - one week per year at the most. It doesn't get very hot where I live, anyways. :)

4. I commute by bus.

5. I don't buy bottled water. I simply fill my own bottle with filtered water.

That's all I can think of right now...
きぃ〜まお> Once you get past the smell, its all good. Or better yet, I can make bio-diesel as well. It's easier than most people think. haha
>だいはど san
Thank you for sharing your ideas. You use some energy-saving appliances, that means you are voluntarily joining environmentalism every time you use them. By the way,I usually go to work by bicycle.

>アンソニー san
It must be a big hurdle to solve. I have hear that the natural gas is odorless so it's dangerous when people use. Hence the gas company puts(seasons?) an odor to the natural gas when they supply the customers with it. So, leaving a little bit odor might not be bad, I guessウインク BUt should be comfortable one thoughわーい(嬉しい顔)

>ieye san
I think so, too. 27 degree is still OK: the sensory temperature may be cooler. That's one of suggestions some environmentalists say, eh?
Hi きぃ〜まお san,

>> So, leaving a little bit odor might not be bad,
>> I guess BUt should be comfortable one though

I'd say it's good for natural gas to smell bad because that will alert you. If the gas smelled good, you might very well ignore it. :)

Thanks for your compliment, by the way. I am no saint, but I try to do what I can to help preserve the environment.
um not littering? Always stick trash in my pocket or carry it around until I find a thrash can. As well as good hygiene. =D
Um....I don't smoke? XD haha

u.u I don't do much. Maybe like energy-saver bulbs, closing all the windows to make the house dark to conserve air conditioning (I guess cus it gets really bad-hot here), and we....recycle. >.>

I take the bus mostly to school. I have been telling my parents to buy a car and not a big-o truck ^_^;
MacabrePrince,

>> I have been telling my parents to buy a car and
>> not a big-o truck

That's a great idea. Gosh I hate those big-ass SUVs and pickup trucks. We have way too many of them here in Seattle. :*(

My wife used to have a Jeep Liberty. I convinced her to trade it in for a smaller, more fuel-efficent Honda CR-V. Still an SUV but better. :)

>だいはど san
Good point! You are so right!わーい(嬉しい顔) If the gas smells good, we will forget to escape or won't even realize we are in danger!

>Abi san
Hi, Abi san. It's good to know there is a person like you, who cares about the beautification of the places指でOK. Here in Japan, I still see some people throw away cigarette butts喫煙 everywhere.

>MacabrePrince san
I guess you are doing something ほっとした顔 Cars車(RV)ダッシュ(走り出す様)...yes, there is a big street near my place and traffic is a kind of heavy most of the time, too. Ughがまん顔!
>crystal guy 座 san
Aha! My hashi! Why did I forget about them until you mentioned thatほっとした顔? That's a handy way to do something for the environment手(チョキ). I guess I'll start carrying my own chopsticks immediately.
Talking about chopsticks, I always use plastic copsticks at home. I don't carry them with me when i go out for dining, though...|o|

When I go to a supermarket and buy some side dish, a shop staff asks me if I need chopsticks, so I usually don't get ones.
Also, a plastic shopping bag, no!! Instead, they give me some stamps on a shop card and when i get 20 stamps, I can use the card as a 100 yen coupon !!

I use iced water bottle or jelly to cool me down...

I scatter some water on a veranda outside to cool the air coming through the windows..
crystal guy 座 (#23),

Yeah, that's cool. I used to carry my own chopsticks while I was in college in Tokyo. Very few people did it back then, so I'd always get a funny look at restaurants.

Now, like KOKKO (#26), I don't do it anymore, but wherever I dine out I usually just use knives and forks. Some local Korean restaurants have chopsticks made of metal (hence re-usable). I like that idea. :)
>KOKKO san
Hi, KOKKO san. Thank you for reminding me, yes, I also have a cotton grocery bag うれしい顔, now I remember あっかんべー! Wow, there are many ways to contribute for the environment, interesting!
I work for a TV channel that does a lot of environmental programming, and I help promote it. Does that count?

:)
hello! Ive been tring without airconditioning this year that so difficult to sleepふらふらbut my body fat percentage reduced -5%ウインク I use an icepillow to sleep that works a lot!
I worry global warming which makes extraordinary weatherがく〜(落胆した顔) I think Japan uses too much electricity so why dont we not waste it anymoreexclamation & question
pls try asap m(__)m
I really cannot stand those big, obnoxious SUVs that have become popular. My next car will definitely be a hybrid of some sort.
I abstain from eating meat, and ride the bus rather than drive a car, and bring my own grocery bags. 手(チョキ)
I also carry around a PET bottle of iced-tea, coffee, etc. It is as good for your wallet as for the emviorment. Besides you can sip chilled drink for hours. So I make it to survive in scorching summer, which is supposed to be worst in Japan for decades.
#27 Die Hard, hello again!! Long time no mixi!!

I like your idea!!

The other day I had to go to a Japanese (Or... maybe Korena??) style BBQ with my husband and there weren't any metal-made chopsticks, forks, spoons...Only wooden ones...|o|
I really felt so bad... I wish I could have brought my own metal-made tongu(I'm not sure this spelling...|o|) , which are like washing clips and we can sand the food when we cook, do you know what I mean....??

But my husband doesn't like a metal chopstick because it's slipery when he catches his food!!
So, I must wash his used woden chopsticks again and again...

Today I went out for lunch with my English friend and the restaurant was an Indian and Thai food restaurant, where they put both wooden chopsticks, metal(of course!!) forks and spoons. My friend first took wooden chopsticks and then she kindly handed the same ones for me, BUT!! First I took them and soon after I remembered this topic, so I nicely out them back and took a fork and a spoon, instead...

I really felt... I was saving our planet little by little!! Very very happy today...

One more good thing!!!

At that restaurant they have no parking lot!!!
It is just because it's located in a closer to downtown, where the cost of renting is so high....
So, we didn't drive but went by bike!!
Very very healthy under this strong heat nearly 38 degrees for LUNCH TIME ....|o|

I guess my body fat must have been .... reduced.., I hope...

#29 Jeff, I think it's really good for you!!

Your work can help others think about the Earth more and more, so.. I think it counts!!

But..., if possible.., I would suggest in your praivate daily life off duty, I hope you can actually practice something!!!

Go for it!!
>Jeff san
I think soわーい(嬉しい顔). Hang in there!

>キタリエ san
Yeah, I know...like neon billboardsぴかぴか(新しい) etc... I think some place needs more street lights for helping public security, instead.

>brightonlove san
I always thought, whenever election campaigns start, not many candidates use hybrid cars車(セダン). They focused more about the other issues, eh? I saw dome candidates were riding bicycles thoughうれしい顔

>美地子 san
So you are bacially veggyクローバー, aren't you? Is it hard to find vegetarian dishes in Japan? I'm not a veggy, but like to eat Tofu hams or sausages and I miss them.

>あれれあれ san
>carry around a PET bottle of iced-tea, coffee
Aha, that's what I should start doing from now onうれしい顔 Why haven't i done that???

>muskox san
Hmmm...Onigiriおにぎり and Mugicha (Sounds like Homer Jay Simpson), that's a perfect combination for me, too指でOK I can eat onigiri as many as possible then手(チョキ).
[36] きぃ〜まお,
Yup. Totally vegan. I actually am not in Japan yet. I will start my adventure in 15 days. I imagine the biggest challenge being vegan is learning how to read all the ingredients. さくらんぼ
>Funky Love Bunny san
>"save water, shower with a friend."
⇒That's so HIPPIEわーい(嬉しい顔)! I like that and that meets my spirituality, but the problem is, I don't have such a friend泣き顔! In the meantime, the company I work with is importing some agricultural products from Australia and the suppliers are telling us how serious the water shortage there is. The drought seems to be prolonged, eh?

>はな san
I didn't know that salt and charcoal could be alternative for a soap電球!

> 美地子 san
i found out that you are not living in Japan. So it's not difficult to buy the foods for vegans, I supposeほっとした顔. I used to live in Vancouver, Canada and saw many stores carrying organic products, too.
