Hello Everyone, this is my first topic in this community. Before starting I have to say that I've never been in Japan and I know only few japanese people, so what I'm going to write is about my limited experience. Also, don't forget that I don't want to offend anyone. I just want to avoid the risk of having some prejudice or a wrong view of japanese people.
My japanese friends care about food more than other people do. So, they care if there is too much oil, if it's too fat...in few words, they feel that japanese food is much healthier than the western one. And they always surprise of my "diet" made of oil and other ingredient. But, at the same time, they like to drink alcohol in a good quantity and smoke, again, in a good quantity. Two habits that are known to be particularly UNhealthy. Now, if this is true, how can you explain this strange contradiction? How is it possible to care so much about "food health" but forget about "alcohol and cigarettes health"? Is that connected to the tradition? Or is there any other reason?
If my friends are only a minority, then let me know.
I figure, If you have to care some much about everything.. You lose the enjoyment of life.
I frankly wouldn't care if I died eating Unhealthy food, Drinking a lot and smoking.. As long as i enjoyed myself.. That's all i truly care about..
I believe in Enjoying life to the fullest..
I drink cause i love the taste of Alcohol.
I smoke cause i love smoking after eating it has a really good taste..
I love my music LOUD.
I love my cars FAST.
I love that Triple Patty burger with extra cheese and the Extra Large Fries and a Nice LARGE Chocolate Shake!!
So what if it's Greasy and unhealthy... I sure as for one am not going to spend my life Eating only Vegetables and Fish.
But I'm not saying I do that everyday.. But what's wrong with enjoying yourself every once and awhile??? Being a Health freak doesn't exactly mean your going to live a long life.
Especially not in this day and age where you can get shot on the street just cause you have nice shoes..
N24. You are totally right about one point: if you have a healthy life you are not sure you will live longer than others.
I disagree about the point that people do these kind of things only sometimes: smokers, for example, need to smoke every day, more than once a day. I've never seen a smoker who says "this week end I will smoke a cigarette".
Probably you are right also about the idea of enojoying your life to the fullest: but my opinion is that people can do this only if they are alone or with people who do the same. Because if, another example, you stay with a person who cares about you, you can't just be alone and do whatever you want. Maybe you should start to care also about the other person.
Finally, let's say like this: I agree with you. If a person wants to enjoy, it's good to enjoy all.
This is the point of my topic: some people don't want to enjoy food because it's unhealthy, but at the same time they enjoy drink and smoke (both really unhealthy). I feel it's not coherent.
So, in a strange way, I think it's more coherent your idea (I do whatever I want).
Id have to agree though.. To smoke and drink..
and than say they only want to eat "healthy" food. It is kind of strange. But maybe that's just how they were raised. Who knows, Everyone has different ways of thinking =P

sorry to sound negative, but ignoring the fact that almost everything we eat is contaminated in some way or other is one reason the world is going bad fast.
If we really cared about what we ate, we would protest the pollution that makes vegetables and fruit bad for us, choose food that wasn't raised with pesticide, steroids, antibiotics or other chemicals.
Also caring more about the environment means we care indirectly more about ourselves.
We owe it to future generations to take care of Mother Earth and to heal the world.
But on that serious note, I do a turnabout and say I agree with ウィール a lot.
Why live a long and stingy life, being scared and taking too much care not to do the things that would shorten your time on earth only to lie dying (at a very old age) loaded with regret at the things you never did, the places you never saw and the experiences you missed.
Enjoy, enjoy... and die with a fat smile on your face.
Eku
Maybe you are right about our world. And, MAYBE, you are right about the idea of enjoying the life. But, in this case, I feel that there are ways to enjoy life better than ruining it.
I don't want to sound old or stupid, but you wrote about Mother Earth: have you ever tried to reach the top of a mountain and look around? Have you spent some time in silence to listen to the nature? Or in front of the sea?
Or have you tried (maybe not because you are a woman and, also, not italian) to play a soccer match with your friends? Or have you listened to some really wonderful song? Read some daydreaming book? Dance with no-sense just for the fun of it, ignoring people around you and their judgement? Gone out with your friends only to laugh and remember the old times (but I'm not saying "getting so drunk that the day after you don't remember what you laughed about)?
These are my ideas of enjoying life: small and natural. Well, maybe with a cookie in my hand...
N24
Thanks for that, I never really thought about everything I ate, what it has been contaminated by or the processes it goes through...
N27
I guess with me I don't really want to live to be really old and would rather live a good life (be it short or decently long) Then again if eat anything I wanted I could do harm to myself and I would rather not have to go through diseases/cancers that I could of helped to prevent...
With most foods like chocolate, oily foods, high sugar goods...etc the temptation goes away after not eating them for awhile, so I guess it just becomes a lifestyle for some. I myself haven't eaten any chocolate or drunk any colas for months now and never really felt like it either.
I agree with N28 in regards to living a small and well as natural life as you are going to get nowadays. Simple things like sitting down and just listening and seeing things how they are often over-looked, but are well worth it. I think at times to really enjoy life we need to take a step back and maybe even start back from square one. Yes, eating any food you want can be enjoyable, but if you look at the long term effects on your body I tend to take another look..

yes yes and yes
i love nature, camping, hiking and also fishing..
i can sit by the sea for hours even without catching anything, just watching the motion of the sea
I used to do paragliding too, there is nothing nicer than being up in the sky with no sound of humanity, just the wind and sometimes the cry of the tombi
so yes i know mother earth, even though i am not italian and i dont play soccer with my friends :))
Eku
I know you know mother earth... I can read it from all your comments!
So, you can probably understand what I mean when I say that there are many ways to enjoy life which don't include ruining it.
Well, of course, without soccer life is not really complete....I'm just kidding!!!
Eku
This is a little "out of topic".
I tried paragliding, once, and it was really nice! So quiet...I felt like when I flight with an airplane...really comfortable. The difference was that I could also feel the wind on my face. It was good!
I once saw a news show doing a story on minus ion, air filtration units in Japan while they were selling like hotcakes (still selling well?).
The interviewer asked the question, "How do you feel about the value of your purchase?" The man responded, "I think the house feels especially clean now and I love having fresh air inside the room." (or something like that)
The interviewee? A gentleman and his daughter who both smoked like crack-whores.
I was laughing my ass off at the contradiction of it all.
well..i donno...! just can't compare smoke and liquor to food. in this case food is something u need to live, smoke and liquor are something u don't really need to live. well, sometimes ppl care too much abt calories. but, more than food there are many things harm ur body. be healthy or be fun is upto what they think the most important is.
Um~drinking and smoking are just some ppl's personal habits~really bit hard to compare this health issue to food. just dont put too much attention on counting calories and those stuff, life should be enjoyed.
『AMY♡』
This is exactly what I wanted to say...people care a lot about food because they say they care about their health. But, at the same time, they smoke and drink without thinking about their health. It's a big contradiction! Especially if you think that without food people die, but not without cigarettes and alcohol.
*のの*
I understand that people are free to choose.
But I don't understand how some people can care so much about the food they eat and not care about their health from the point of view of alcohol and smoke.
Even if it's hard to compare drink and smoke to food, it's always HEALTH we are talking about.
I understand what you think, Marco. Well, it is true JAPANESE food is helthier compared to Western food. However it is also true we have much multi country-food. We could eat their food besides Japanese.
I suppose it is one of misunderstanding for foreineres.
Japanese food is healthy but we don't eat only Japanese one.
And also I can say "Nomikai" (drinking party), espesially after working,is one of Japanse culture.
You know, some ppl like drinking and smoking, and some ppl don't. In my case I don't drink much, so i like eating and drinking a little. I didn't get used to western drinking style, which is only drinking with little food.
i guess that if you are already ingesting a bunch of poison (cigarette smoke, alcohol, oily food, etc.), you would probably lessen the one you can control...
since smoking and drinking are bad anyways, it's not necessary to make eating bad too, i guess....
Hi, it is funny story! I think they care about getting fat. Japanese really care about their appearence. They sometime think fat = ugly... I am kind of fat (definitly in Japan) and people always said to me " If you are skinier you are better looking" even my parents say that to me. Smoking does not make you fat, drinking... if you do not eat together it is ok. But oil noooo~~!! funny, eh? I am goin back to Japan soon and I am really scared!
For me it is different, because I live in Canada , and MANY people care about fat more than Japanese. They like chicken thigh than chicken breast becasue they have less fat. They like red meat than red with white (shimofuri) because it is less fat, but they eat 2-3 times sweeter desserts than Japanese one, and it is ok than eating fat.
Hi. This is the 1st time 4 me to write in this community.
Marco, I lived in Japan for nearly 3 years. I wont disagree that western people eat unhealthy food. But, I will strongly disagree with anyone who says Japanese people are healthy eaters. If you look at what a single middle aged Japanese man eats, you would be suprised. And the amount of binge eating and drinking due to corporate outings is just crazy. (is that how u spell 'binge'?)
Is curry rice healthy? I dont think so. Is karaage? No. How about yakiniku? Enough oil to give u a heart attack.
In Australia, where im from, cigarettes cost about $7US a pack. In Japan, what? Like $2? Shit, I'd probably start smoking if they were that cheap here!
I'd just say it is easier to be heatlhy in Japan. (as far as food goes). However, I agree too that the amount everyone smokes and drinks kind of offsets it. Not to mention I absolutely hate the fact that you cannot go out to hardly any bars in Japan without being pummeled by cigarette smoke. And even a lot of restaurants and ramen shops are not much better. Non-smokers right to breath clean air has a long way to go in this country.
Im living australia, and what i reckogniged about the
food here, is that most of the food here are SOOOO
fattning!! I would like to order food at the restaurant, but,,, im kinda a hesitate to order it, when i see the BIG fat lady ordering some greacy steak or oily thick fat chips on the plate and i end up ordering some decent
salad or something.
AS i am Japanese,i think we do feel guilty or disgusted to have heavy and greacy food on our plate.
Moreover, generally, we are very tiny people compare to western people therefore, it is kinda shame to become
BIG or FAT...
It is another fact that there are lot of young people who are in a situtation of the eating disorder...
anyway.
WE LOOOOOVe our alchohol too much...
it is not about the health.
some ppl dont eat but DRINK and smoke!!!
Some reports said Japan is the biggest cigarett consuming country ina world.
so,,,, here we are.
I think japanese ppl as very unique and misterious. and feel pressured between the westernised society and also still stack with the japanese nortion....
N49
This is exactly what I don't understand... if you are already ingesting poison (drink and smoke) I don't see why I should avoid the food poison.
It's not that avoiding bad food I can balance the damage of smoking and drinking.
N52
Maybe you are right but, in this case, I can't really say anything...
Hello again! I've been so busy and today finally I could come back to this topic!! wow...!! So many commenets already here!! Takes lots of time to follow up!!
Maybe I think your Japanese friends think in that way about their healthy lives. Maybe they only focus about food but not about drinks and smoking, unfortunately..
When I go to a supermarket around lunch time, there're so many fat food and lunch boxes, sometimes just cooked. So oily... And so many office workers around the food corner!! Whatever they choose every day, the food are all oily, or most of it is oily, so they just have to choose one of these. And expensive too. People who don't want to spend money for oily food like me, must prepare our own food. It takes a little more time when we make our lunch box, but it's worth!!
Do your Japanese friends make their own healthy lunch boxes to the office?
Around dinner time, too at a supermarket, they start discounting on food, so again, so many office workers come and wait when the shop staff starts putting stickers of Half Price Off!! onto the food ( packages)....
We should think totally what the healthy life style should be, I think.
Personally, I don't drink and I don't smoke. I only sometimes eat fat food because usually they taste delicious unfortunately..., so I try to think if I want to spend a healthy life, I must eat simple food, cook by myself, then I can save my money too. My health, too.
Every food item here is a Carbohydrate or Starch. Deep fried, or covered in hi calorie sauces. No lactose free milk, no really good low carb extras like Ketsup, Veggie based alternative cheese and butter substitutes, No egg whites in plastic tubs at the super markets. Eating healthy over here can be very difficult if you want more than a salad. You have to sacrifice many dietary pleasures if you want to be healthy. You see Organic foods but they are still high calorie. They have a really long way to go here. You still see entire families of fat people wobbling around. Fat equals Sumo, or Judo booth national treasures.
53
I heard of the 'business drinking'...they say it's tradition so it's probably impossible to change.
About cigarettes price, it's also true. Here is the UK a pack of cigarettes is even more expensive than Australia: more than 9$!!! Well, I don't smoke!
54
Maybe it's just question of time. One day they will start to ban the smoke from bars and restaurants! Actually, is it not already banned?
55
Maybe we should all go back to the origin. Even though I feel that being a total vegetarian is not the healthiest solution.
56
But I heard that in some cities is not allowed to smoke on the street anymore. Is it correct?
57
Well, also american are a little contradictory! At this point I would prefer to have japanese life style than the american one.
58
Probably you are right. Japan has a totally different history from the western countries. It takes time to find a balance between NEW and OLD.
61
I don't drink and smoke either. Well, I don't know about my friends because some of them are abroad so they don't probably prepare lunch boxes. I think my wife used to go to the restaurant for dinner because she finished to work late. I don't know about lunch.
62
I agree with you. Nowadays it's impossible to find perfect food, but we can't do otherwise.
To eat really healthy we should probably grow and prepare the food by oursleves. But it's impossible!
