I don't know if it's only me, but I think the name of the community has a kind of mean-spirited and exclusive ring to it. I'm sure that the person who created this community did not think of it in such a way, and I respect that, but I personally feel it would make more sense if the name was just "English speakers' community" or "for those who speak English" etc. I mean, since it's obviously a group for English speakers... I am not sure if anybody who don't speak English would even bother to look into this ... why is it necessary to remind those who do not use English that this is an exclusive club (does it have to be?)?
Also ... I am a female, and I sometimes wonder about the community picture. The Japanese [Asian?] girl's and pretty and stuff, but how does she represent the English speaking community in Japan? She's too cool to me, in a sense that 1.kind of too sexy and 3. too young to represent the whole English speaking community in Japan.
I would rather think it 's better to have something like an image of a globe or something, instead of a picture of a young girl. I know that won't be sexy at all, but more realistic and representative. Or some picture of plain old faces of real English speakers, black, brown, white, Asian, anything.
well the thing is that i know some people who are as old as 40 something in this community. obviously kids [teens] do not consist a majority of english speaking people in japan. most ppl are older and on business, or in grad schools, or in exchange programs at colleges, etc.
i was just looking at the community room and i see that the guy who created the community meant to say "english only" to japanese people who may come here perhaps with an intent to practice english but would revert back to japanese .. but then it seems like it has turned into a community of the actual english speakers. hah.
I don't think there is anything particularly
exclusive about it. It's a community where
people who speak English can help people who
are learning English.
English lessons are expensive and not everyone
can afford them. Some people have a family
to support, and others work stupidly long
hours. Whatever the reason, if someone wants
to practise their English, I'm more than
happy to listen and point out any mistakes.
Admittedly not everyone is here for that and
that's OK too.
I agree with GJ. Besides, "English Speakers' Commnity" does not necessarily imply that you must use English and therefore does not show the intent of the community correctly.
Nothing wrong with the name.
Its short, catchy and helps ensure that English is what will be used.
the image was more than likely used just to get peoples attention.
no problems there....this is japan so your mascot or logo need have nothing to do at all, what so ever with what your product or service is.
as some people said, english speakers sounds like for native...so i think english only is better and one reason why i joined this community is the title. englsh only is more attractive for me.
I think the name "English Only" might have a mean-spirited vibe for native english speakers, who are used to hearing "x-only" often and in that kind of way. "ENGLISH ONLY" sounds like a firm command. I'm a native English speaker and I did get that bad vibe from the name when I first saw it. It implied to me "If you don't speak English you're not allowed to join this club...it's for ENGLISH ONLY."
Other's may disagree, but that was my first impression until I explored the communities intro/posts/etc.
I know there was no mean intent in the making of the name.
If there was going to be a name changing, even something cute and childish like "Let's use English!" would work. lol It sounds like an elementry school textbook. xD
I've never thought about the name of 'English Only'. It must be attracted to people who want to communicate in English.
But photo..... I totally agree with you. The photo mightn't be suitable for this site.
I am pretty sure the founder of the community is the only person that could adjust the name and picture. I don`t have a problem with either. We all chose to join it as it was already knowing that we had no authority to change the name or photo. I think even bringing up the topic might be considered slightly stepping out of line by some people.
Some people might get bad vibes from "English Only"
but otherwise, people will join this community writing
Japanese, Spanish, Thai,Alabic whatever language and
that's sure gonna be not what the founder of this community meant.
This board is for English only, plain and simple. It's for people who can write/understand English, and for those who wish to practice it. I would love to join a Japanese Only community, just to practice.
If I could count the times I've seen places with xxx ONLY (mainly Japanese and Spanish), I'd be in the thousands. Seriously, it's not that big of deal :).
