Can someone please explain to me the fascination in Anime and Manga? For me, they're for kids and people who obsess over them need their head checked. You wouldn't catch me with a copy of Beano or Dandy in my hand or watching an episode of Pokemon past the age of 12 so why is it acceptable to read Manga and watch Anime without feeling like a child? Whatever someone can find in the artistic beauty of these mediums can be found in much higher quality in a piece of art. The storylines pale in comparison to those of a good novel so out the window goes that argument.
I'm an ordinary person.(I think.) 32years old. Got a family, kid, and dogs.I play Basketball. Got many friends.Love to go out with my kid and friends. Read books, too. Can't sleep without finishing today's a newspaper.
But I do like Manga.
And I don't think I'm a nerd.
Like other books or movies, I feel like I'm experencing some unordinary things through Manga.
Food for brain = News paper, books
Make up for heart = Movies, fun books
Candy for imagination = Very funny books, Manga
But to be serious, anime and manga isn't just Pokemon and whatever you find on TV Asahi Sunday morning. There's a lot of adult targeted stuff out there too, like Monster.
Manga is so widely accepted in Japan that it's not correct to say it's only for the "nerds." I'd venture to say that an average adult (esp. guy) buys at least one weekly comic magazine every week. It's not uncommon to find several passengers reading some comicbooks on the train at any time of the day. Somebody said manga was already a part of the Japanese culture. That's probably true. :)
ちびらのおかぁ....
exactly. many westerners don't understand the japanese fascination with manga but they watch tv programs like The Simpsons, Futurama, King of the Hill, SouthPark...
Whats the difference? None really.
Like シチ*リア says, its candy for the imagination.
Reading a stimulating book is great, watching a thought provoking movie is cool
Reading a bad book can even have its advantages, and hey, who doesn't enjoy watching the odd B movie.
So why not anime, manga and tv programs like the Simpsons?
Its like saying you should never eat junkfood or drink cola... sometimes you need a little shit in your life.
No?
I dont watch amime, but some MIYAZAKI animes are great. and he has philosophy and he put his philosophy into his ANIMES.
his ANIMEs are not only for kids. kids may not understand that hidden masages but if you are smart enough to understad his ideas, you can enjoy his Anime more than that.
The anime and manga you listed are definitely children's anime. But there are a LOT of other anime and manga for mature readers and even ones called 'hentai' which is basically porno anime (definitely not for kids).
The ones with good storylines are anime or manga with lots of drama, love relationships,(very) violent action, and hidden messages that comments on life in general. Even though it's animated, I think many japanese and others read or watch it because the stories are just as good as a novel or movie. Some people say it's because the japanese are good at expressing emotions through pictures like writing kanji but i don't really think it's THAT complex.
Maybe NANA is a good example of a dramatic manga/anime about romance and friendship...it's story has depth to it like a tv drama plus great music. It was even made into a live action movie twice. Another popular anime is the Gundam series which is about mecha (big robot-like ships that are pilot by someone). I don't really get the big appeal of mecha anime and buying gundam models but I do like the drama and the stories of the characters in the Gundam Seed Destiny series.
In anime that's for children like Pokemon or Kirarin Revolution the animation is chessy and just super cute. But for more serious anime/manga the animation is very beautiful and detailed. Some anime nowadays looks very realistic. The anime Blue Submarine comes to mind or the Rurouni Kenshi OVA (original video animation)...
I like anime but I don't watch or read that much of it anymore...but I still read Inuyasha...i like to see where Inuyasha and Kagome's relationship is going. :)
But yeah, everyday people can like anime/manga BUT some take it TOO far like the otaku. Those people have issues...I heard that many of the male otaku(s) never get married because they are "saving" themselves for their anime girl! I heard at lot of otakus loves Sailor Mercury from the Sailor Moon anime! LOL!
I think many regular people in Japan might have one or two manga/anime they like and watch/read it whenever which is fine. But the otaku watches and reads A LOT!
I think Manga can be entertaining and educating at the same time. Lots of Japanese kids and adults learn about histroy through manga (e.g. Sangokushi, Versaille no bara, Tenjou no niji...). How many kids or adults bother to learn about history in your country?
I think your response was the closest to the answer.
A nerd, last time I checked is a intellectually, arkward person with very poor social and physical skills and habits.
I like Anime and Manga but, I think I'm about average in intellect, normal enough to socialize, love socially and I can bench press 210lbs. So, I think I'm pretty standard.
Point is, anime is more than a "nerd thing". In a 2007 survey conducted by magazine "Anime America" out of 500 surveyors age ranging 18-24, 70% are quite familiar with Anime and are fans of such.
Anime as little as you know has a great impact on successful movies, shows and even hip-hop artists such as "The Matrix", "The Dark Knight", "Kill Bill", "The Boondocks" and "Stronger" by Kanye West. Along with so many others. Anime has become one of the reasons that Entertainment from the West is evolving.
Everyone is talking and yet no one is asking the most basic questions.
What is a nerd?
What is a geek?
How can anyone even start to talk about this until everyone has the same definetion for those words.
Essentually no one has said anything since I doubt everyone has the same definetion.
SO many people like animation and manga. and then Japanese animations/manga are really popular all over the world. "Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi" by Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most popular Japanese-animation movie. not only Japanese but also American, for example, Spiderman and X-men become the movies and they are very popular.
there are people who watch the animation for kids and delighted. I think these people are geeks.
I dunno what draws me to it.
I used to be a biiiigg fan of anime. And I hated manga....
Now manga is what I mostly stomach.
I love it, actually. Mostly romance.
I can't describe the draw to it.
However, I can't stand that people think that's the only thing japan is good for.
Really.
Saying "dattebayo", after naruto, does NOT make you an expert on japan. DX
there are more words to the japanese language than "baka", "yaoi", and "kawaii neko"
DX
I see more senior citizens and middle-aged adults reading manga on trains here than children.
Manga is viewed here very differently than it is in the states, where I'm originally from. It's as normal as someone reading a newspaper.
Just sayin'.
Of course, you don't see as many assholes dressing up as Naruto characters and wearing those headbands in Japan walking the streets as you would in the states. Makes me want to kill.
It's a very old topic, and I'm not entirely sure why (or how) it
was resurrected. Personally, I think the OP is probably obsessing
just as much as some otaku.
Live and let live. I quite like some anime (Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuutsu,
Cowboy Bebop and the like), but it's not for everyone. I personally
think CSI is moronic and SVU is rubbish but if someone likes
them, that's fine by me.
lol lol lol
Well Neil, it is people who are obsessed with managa that are the ones that fix your PC, discover new technological breakthroughs, and create new systems that make your life easier.
By the way, is being a movie-fan an acceptable lifestyle in your eyes?
Last but not least, too much of one thing can be bad bad bad.
PS
One time, I asked an English teacher what made him come to Japan, and with vacant eyes, he replied "I love mangas. Especially his and hers circumstances (彼氏彼女の事情). It is so awsome!"
That is a bit much in my opinion.
there is much more MATURE anime out there ya know? and i'm not talking about hentai and those yaoi/yuri books but things like Ah! My Goddess or Gokusen( i think). I even consider Death Note to be on the mature side. There are some really great stories out there but I don't hear you complaining about people reading graphic novels either.
Something that expands ones imagination aside from outside substances,, should be for everyone. However when it consumes someone's life, and they loose sense of reality, then they better wake the hell up
i think its awkward to like anything that seems strange or belonging to a certain age group, especially if you don't have the cajones to deal with the slack people will give.
while anime and manga are fine in and of themselves, its the sweaty otaku that people need to be careful not to turn into.
Despite the negative impression on this topic, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan consider them as one of the popural Japanese culture which is widely accepted around the world and are giving the awards to new foregin Manga creators every year.
