Why do so many young Japanese flock to New Yorks dirtiest areas and glamorize everything many of us from the East Coast are trying to get away from ? I could understand if they were over there living it up in fancy condos riding in limos etc.. but they are slumming and loving it ? I guess you have to see the bad side of all that before you can appreciate how fucked up it really is. Crack heads, people getting shot etc.. Where`s the attraction ?

No clue!!! My Husband was living in Chicago and he loooved it, but I went there and was miserable...

but you know, Foreigners idolize Tokyo for the same reason IMO.
Is that just another example of the grass looking greener? I live in Seattle and I'm lovin' it (tm), but I don't think I'd have the same feeling towards NYC if I were to live there. No offense to the New Yorkers. :)
hahaha What a terrible phrase for this situation...

More like grass looking dirtier...
I feel ya. I grew up in the "Deep South" so I hate any place dirty or without nature...
Yeah, don't get me started on that whole "asian gangster look" thing where they dress like their favorite rap artists, not realizing that if they walked into the ATL dressed like T.I. they would get mugged. I'm surprised more Japanese people don't get stabbed in America.
btw, I leave for japan in 11 hours and 21 minutes. ;-)
I lived in Chicago. There are a lot of good areas as well as bad. The city is beautiful, downtown, the mile, navy pier..etc.

I would love to live in Lincoln Park. So beautiful.

The bad areas do not usually have tourists. Even the police will drive through those areas quickly.
A.Elizabeth,
It smells like shiet throughout the entire city, even the beautiful areas!!! The trains are nasty as hell. The food is not that great, except the stuff foreigners make. There's no good Mexican food. People are hella rude and pushy, etc...

Anyway, my view of Chicago is that it sucks, but don't take it personal...it's just not my bag.

I think there are more girls traveling alone or in pairs in New York than Japanese guys. The ladies tend to get accepted no matter where they go. So thats why they may enjoy the night scene in New York a little more than the average visiting Japanese guy. American men take the ladies under their wings but its not that way for the men. If they are in the wrong place at the right time they get stabbed, or shot :)
I live in Brooklyn Ny and there are lots of Japanese women there especially this year. They tend to hang out with poser hipster types who don't have real jobs either. They try to dress stylish and unique but end up looking like every other hipster poser.

It's a shame really because many of the ones I met seem to abandon their nice Japanese values to adopt the New York "attitude" and it's not cute.

If you ver want to meet these women just follow the skinny, homosexual looking white boys to the nearest indie rock show.
Murf,
Stop stickin' Japanese girls in a box. They don't have to conform to your little cute standards.
I would tend to agree about why would you want to hang out in a new york slum, but although a am from sanfrancisco and dont like new york, for japanese people it is america, and being american i would agree. Yes new york smells bad and tends to be more dirty then other cities, the people are for the most part rude, and the trains smell like, well not many good things, the city has a classic feel to it, and many enjoy that, same with chicago. Both cities have just a feeling you get from them, same with the diffrences between osaka tokyo and other big japanese cities. And from what i have been told many japanese people that travle to america like american culture, and no better place to get it then new york.

Actually I didn't say they have to conform to my standards, I was expressing remorse for them losing a part of themselves trying to conform to New York standards...Have you ever been to New York?

That is what this is about New York.

I'm completely offended. That's it, I'm removing you from my friend's list! (w)

Every city has a different feel to it and a different appeal. I agree with Josh, it all depends on how you look at it. Paris, in my opinion, is an absolutely beautiful city. I love the architecture and the atmosphere. But there are some people who detest the city, saying that people are rude, the streets are dirty, the Metro smells... the same complaints that people have listed about New York. Maybe it's because I've lived in Paris that I can live in New York and enjoy myself. I love the frentic pace of the city, the fact that I can go outside my apartment and always find something of interest to do. I love the people, the New Yorkers who don't even blink while they butt into your conversation on the subway. I love looking around me and thinking that somehow everything is familiar because I've seen it in movies and television shows. New York is the most filmed city in America.

Just because I love the city doesn't mean I don't recognize the downsides. The crowds. The expense. The /smells/. But there's not enough bad to outweigh the good. I think each person is drawn to different cities for their own individual reasons. Everyone likes a different pace to their life, some prefer peace and quiet while others prefer excitement. Just because we may not agree with someone's enthusiasm doesn't mean that we should judge them for it.

And I run into a lot of Japanese here in New York. I've met everyone from language students to company workers to secretaries for the UN. Everyone that I've met has been very different. Different interests, different objectives, different opinions... I don't think you can lump them into one single group and say: this is what it is to be Japanese in America.
Chicago doesn't have good Mexican food? You're telling
me that in a city with such a large population of
mexicans you couldn't find good mexican food? tsk tsk
tsk, you just don't know where to go...
There are a lot of japanese in places like Long Beach and Azusa and Koreatown here in LA, and i don't think those areas are fancy at all. I don't know much about azusa but i know that much of long beach and pretty much all of koreatown are pretty awful. However, i think the japanese that live there are doing it mainly because of the rent prices being lower.
Actually I think its different for those Japanese that choose to "Live" in New York or any large American or European city.
I was a talking more about the ones that are traveling on a shoe string and head directly to the most dangerous party areas because we all know those places have the best parties. You just have to keep your wits about you. I have seen them in places that get raided regularly in L.A. Places that a week ago was closed down because someone got executed gangland style in a back room. Underground parties were the little square peep hole is flipped open and you need to pass inspection to get in. Places that I know are not being run with a proper license. They think thats glamorous cause they`ve seen them on TV etc. I blend right in to those places but they really don`t and they don`t seem to be concerned in the least. I have heard guys talking about what the should do to unsuspecting Japanese in places like that and I think if they ( the Japanese) knew what was being said they would think twice about heading to those places.
I agree that we should not let the bad element scare you into not having a good time but how many foreigners would run up and jump into a Red army Van in Japan thats blaring nationalist slogans. Would that be brave or stupid ?
Murf,
Maybe they are not losing themselves, but finding something...

Oscar,
Where I live there are tons of good Mexican places all over the place...It sucks if I have to search for one. Besides, the population density is not that high.
