This is a bit extreme:

RIAA Wants to Depose Dead Defendant's Children; But Will Allow them 60 Days to "Grieve"

Just when we think we've heard it all....

In Michigan, in Warner Bros. v. Scantlebury, after learning that the defendant had passed away, the RIAA made a motion to stay the case for 60 days in order to allow the family time to "grieve", after which time they want to start taking depositions of the late Mr. Scantlebury's children:

Just read about it on CNET news. The RIAA has done some incredibly stupid things in the past, but this one is the "clear winner."

The RIAA has been trying to settle all lawsuits it has filed against those who they *alledge* have uploaded/exchanged copyrighted music. They threaten the possible defendants by telling tham it's easier for them to just pay $3,500 and move on than fight the lawsuit, which could cost much more and isn't really worth the effort. How smart. I bet this has been a major revenue stream for the RIAA.
Wow, that's just ridiculous.

The only way the RIAA gets away with abusing the US legal system is the fact that it's backed by the vast wealth of the music industry. All of the frivolous lawsuits that the RIAA files probably are wasting more money than they claim to lose through filesharing.
Thieving, parasitic, barnacles! That kind of news makes me want to go out and download some copyrighted music. Any good programs out there that let you appropriate copyrighted files and programs? :)
Min,

No kidding. Who knows, there may be a few RIAA agents sneaking around here... $3,500 per person is a lot of extra revenue!
4> not if you're sensible. Use bittorrent and download albums. If you happen to download an .exe file don't run it. Install anti-virus and anti-spyware oftware and run it regularly.

I tend to get most of my downloaded music via BitTorrent or Soulseek.

If I happen to really like the artist/music, I shop on Amazon for used CDs, or in the case of JPop artists, eBay or YesAsia.com...
Is WinMX still functional? That's been a great source of Japanese songs - especially the old cartoon ("anime") songs which are commercially unavailable now.
Especially for Japan users.

I don't know if you realise but more and more people are getting caught for illegal p2p.

I used to work at an ISP here in Japan and the police regularly ask for IP/customer information. So you might want be careful.
I'm like you Gar. I generally buy cd's of artists I really like. To be honest I've not yet downloaded a single internet music file for keeps or to put on a cd as an mp3 file.

On the other hand, I think people sample and try out tonnes more music over the internet than they used to because of the ready availability. I think it's a small price to pay for greater exposure.

Music companies say they're losing a lot of revenue, but these days, music is a lot like intellectual property. It's frequently changed and remixed, and if it's a particularly well made tune, it will do well in it's own right.

Oh and thanks disco for the heads up on bittorrent. :)

I definitely agree with you there, Guchi... I think thanks to BT/Soulseek, I actually buy MORE music than before I ever started downloading MP3s. There's so many great artists out there that don't get any radio airplay, that when I'm finally am able to hear their music, I often end up getting their CD to support them.

Hmmm, sounds like a good idea for a new topic...

I agree completely with you.

The problem is you're not buying the CD's they want you to buy!
Buying a smaller independently produced CD does nothing for the RIAA...

Maybe they could solve their problem by getting out of the courtroom and back to the business of supporting talented performers, rather than the pure crap they've been force feeding people for the last several years...
