One of the great things about the internet, is the ease of sharing and acquiring new interests through arguably the widest diversity of people possible, only in a matter of seconds. With that being said, I thought that this would be a nice thread in which we can discuss our favourite bands and perhaps offer suggestions to other people for music to listen to, on the basis of mutual interest, or due to one's knowledge of another's interest in music.
I will start.

Of course, depending on different days, moods, and the whatnot, I like to listen to different bands. However, hands-down, the band I enjoy listening to most would be In Flames.

Why?

Well, it's always nice to listen to original music. And In Flames was one of the three pioneering bands of melodic death metal. With the mixture of keyboards, melodic guitars, and the intensity of death metal, it results in quite an awe-inspiring concoction, that will surely leave an impression on you. Good or not, well, that's not for me to judge!

One of the main critiques against metal where the vocalist screams is that one cannot 'understand' what he/she is singing/screaming. As lovely as lyrics are, and notably, In Flames typically has quite some depth to theirs, I refute to believe that one can judge music due to one's ability to understand the lyrics or not. Someone singing a song in a language you don't understand can be beautiful, even if you don't know what it is about. However, the 'screaming' in In Flames is pretty mild compared to many metalcore/melodic death metalbands, but for a band that is well over ten years old and with nine odd records, it's got a bit of everything.

Which leads me on to the main reason why I love this band. No matter what my mood is, this band has something for it. If I'm looking for something serene, then I could just listen to some singles like Come Clarity, or The Chosen Pessimist, whereas if I'm looking for something to motivate me to 'get shit done', then almost all of their other songs would suffice, but I'll lay some honourable mentions to:
Black and White, Freefall, Cloud Connected, Only For the Weak, and Clayman.

Here's a YouTube video for you to check them out!

Well,

I like 'the Hoosiers' the song 'Choices' in particular

I've always liked U2 because I like all of their albums and I think Bono is sexy, dedicated and has a great voice.
U2 used to be one of my favorite bands when I was a teenager. I'm not a big fan of their current output, but those records from the 80s and early 90s will always have a special place in my heart (even though I never listen to them anymore).

My favorite band of the moment, as of this day of August 27, 2010, would be the Norwegian group, Jaga Jazzist. Reason? Very simple - I saw them last month and they totally blew my brain into pieces. Ask me a week later, and it'll be a different band.

My favorite Japanese band would probably be Natsumen, who are this weird prog/jazz/post rock/funk hybrid who can totally shred it live.

I'm a bit all over the shop, but there are a few bands I always go back to. My first ever favourite band was Queen....the first record I ever bought was "A Night at the Opera"....I seem to remember buying an Alice Cooper album at the same time, but Queen stayed with me.

In the 90's I loved Bad Religion, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Tom Waits. Of those the only band I still love in Bad Religion.

At the moment, I really dig Katy Perry and Tsuji Ayano....but I think Tsuji Ayano will be the one who stays with me for years. She has such a beautiful voice and her song writing skills are superb. She writes songs that suit her voice.

My absolute favourite has always been Queen. No-one else. They're just not replaceable.

I've been listening to their music since the early 80s. The quality of music they produce is totally stunning. Their guitar orchestration, harmony and melody - I have never heard anything like it to this day. I can sing almost all their songs word-to-word. They are just truly amazing.

I literally cried upon hearing the news of Freddie Mercury's death.

Listening to Brian May's "Red Special" sound, I wish I had learned how to play the guitar.

God bless them.
TOTO

Because I LOVE Steve Lukather. He is an American Grammy Award-winning guitarist and he works a lot of genres including rock, prog, jazz and funk. He has been involved with arranging, composing, and recording on over 1,000 albums.

Especially I am also a big fan of Lukather's Jazz fusion band "Los Lobotomys" which he plays with notable sessions musicians.

>Chiorita

I found "Africa" so beautiful.
Listening to it, I feel like I'm In the jungle in Congo or in the savanna. I don't know any other song by them though...

My fave is The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
They run the whole gamut.
You almost can't believe "Can't Stop" and "Under the Bridge" are by the same band.
>Mlover

yeah i love that song, too :) i like RHCP,too.!! Flea is a great Bassist. he looks crazy but actually, he is playing his bass with his high technique. 指でOK
My favorite band is Jethro Tull, especially because of Ian Anderson, the front-man for the group. Besides being an excellent singer and composer, he's also an amazing (self-taught) flautist. No one else could take an instrument that is so "un-rock" and make it fit so perfectly with progressive rock music. Their concerts are incredibly entertaining as well.

At about 5 1/2 minutes into this video, Ian and guitarist Martin Barre get into a great flute/guitar duet which is incredible to watch...

My favorite bands are

SMASHING PUMPKINS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBm_fuIeQL0
Oasis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDvz_0_2VvA
My Bloody Valentine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DEnwUAzPG4
Blonde Redhead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ura2VLgx6Pk
POLICE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLFF2P8fInI
XTC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RApvaQ0uGTw
Duran Duran http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQnqNLeiWKw

ペンギン
It's great that we have such a diverse range in interests in music! In due time, I will check out all of the bands mentioned here, and who knows, I may even end up falling in love with bands from genres I had no idea that I liked.
I should mention one more incredible talent, since yesterday was the 20th anniversary of his death in a helicopter crash: Stevie Ray Vaughan
His skill and his music still remains legends in Texas and around the world.
Here's to you, SRV! You will always be missed!

Iron Maiden! They are simply the best, end of report.
Hmmm..... I have such an eclectic taste in music it is difficult. In no special order:

Tay Zonday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwTZ2xpQwpA

Buddy Holly, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra, Bob Marley, Mozart, Dolly Parton (in her prime she literally stood out in her field), Muddy Waters, Madonna, Hillsong United, The Grateful Dead, Guns N' Roses, Bruce Springsteen, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Steely Dan, ZZ Top, U2, Black Sabbath, Yellow Monkeys, Bob Dylan, and a number of others. It all depends on my mood.

Luciano Pavarotti is always great, as is Leontyne Price

Oh yea, I just love the "Butthole Surfers" band's name.
and, cant forget:
Metallica

Anybody going to say "Justin Bieber"?

Re: Metallica
Any band that sues their fans loses all credibility with
me. I bet they shared around mixed tapes when they
were kids....now this generation is doing the modern
equivalent and they have a sook and run for the lawyers.
metallica having sued their fans.....

Let's face it, they are heavy metal! Goes with the territory! Heavy metal bands usually push the limit of standard societal acceptable actions.

Besides, they didn't really sue their fans, they just had them banned! (from Napster) LOL.

BTW: I forgot this artist! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0
(in addition to #12)

I forgot picking up Japanese bands.

i) Boom Boom Satellites http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR6p4phW25g

ii) I've (not exactly a band, more correctly a creative production team)
[ex.] with Kawada Mami as vocal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rgv1wfgIsmk
Glay, hands down!
I started following them a bit late, back in '98 but ive been in love with their music ever since. They are the only band that I would buy each album out of good faith, truly believing that id enjoy it. Their music has such a theatrical and sometimes nostalgic quality that i love! Even as ive backtracked to the old stuff ive found myself appreciating them more!
At the moment I am quite into The Strokes. They have a sounds that suites my feeling.
the smashing pumpkins

i love the melody and voice of billy
and james...they have such a sweet voice and sounds.
How about a Japanese band...?

At the time I first came to Japan the SHIBUYA KEI movement was at its peek, and KOME KOME CLUB had just released PHI. I was very surprised because at the time so many American bands were just using drum machines and midi keyboards, but the Japanese bands had real musicians.

CORNELIUS and P5 eventually managed to get a cult following in the U.S. and Original Love even had some collaboration with THE BRAND NEW HEAVIES, but then the AVEX sound became popular and Japanese groups began sounding more like their American counterparts again... :-(
You guys are forgetting one person! For those of you have lived overseas, you are forgetting Weird Al Yankovic! He in the man! Ilove 「smells like nirvana」、「altenative polka」、and so on.
I also like Wezzer and the Smashing Pumpkins
# 27
YES! Weird Al is a musical genius!
My favorite is "It's all about the Pentiums".

I hate to admit it, but I understand every single geeky PC reference in this song...
