I will say, I've had fights with friends online, and when I saw them it was like nothing ever happened... almost like its a different world.

I will say, I've had fights with friends online, and when I saw them it was like nothing ever happened... almost like its a different world.
A few days ago, my friend Cathy was consoling her friend Nicole, over a relationship issue.
Nicole was upset that her boyfriend didn't want to change his Facebook relationship status to "In a relationship with...", saying that he didn't feel it was anyone's business who he was in a relationship with--and that the people who did care already knew he and Nicole were dating.
Cathy told Nicole not to worry, and that guys just do that sort of thing sometimes. Nicole is still pretty peeved though; it seems that for her, choosing not to tell people about your relationship--even if it's online--is tatamount to being in an uncommitted relationship. I've heard a similar opinion made by other people, and it makes me wonder why it's so important for strangers to know about someone's relationship status...
Do we cave to peer pressure to an extent on SNS sites? Like, we don't want to provide certain personal details, but are forced so to do because of others's demand/expectations?

With stuff like this, I tend to think it doesn't really have much to do with technology. I mean, in a bygone era they might have been arguing about why he won't let her wear his letterman jacket, or whatever. It's just one of those things young couples tend to stumble over.
With that said, I think there's a setting somewhere to control who can see things like your relationship status.
