It seems that DoCoMo will be the first telco in Japan to release the SIM locks on their cell phones. Do you think this will help encourage competition for mobile devices on the international market, and finally help Japanese companies get their sexy gear out into the larger world--or might the release of SIM locks have a disastrous effect on the industry? What do you think?
I think I read someplace that in order to sell phones into Europe, they will need to have a standard power plug. I could not find a link...so I may be wrong.
It does't benefit Japan, at least for a next few years.
Freed SIM means higher device prices, say present price tag plus 40,000-50,000yen.
it causes a decrease on sales which will effect telecom companies' profit. Then they have to think about foreign markets.
The reason domestic telecoms don't go abroad is that they can thrive in Japan. They can make a huge profit within their archipelago, why do they have to go out to sell their phones with relatively high risks.
The policy of freeing SIM locks will be only welcomed by foreign mobile company and Docomo.
Docomo can attract significant number of iPhone users from SoftBank. Because ONLY the iPhone is working properly on the other career.
AU is out of sight. It uses CDMA which requires a different chip on cell phones. So its cell can't take Docomo and SoftBank's SIM.
For long term, it's difficult to predict. In war zone, we can hunt, and can be hunted.
This will hurt sales of phones since consumers switching providers can keep their old phones, but customers will usually want a new phone anyways.
As for using the phone overseas, many phones here will be turned into a basic phone overseas since many of the tech here is proprietary, such as 1seg. Also, if you wanted to unlock a phone, its cheap enough to do.
This is mostly to give consumers a choice instead of forcing some ppl to decide between a good provider or the phone they desire.
