I have heard this story from my teacher. He is a great person.
Mari Yonehara was an author, and she died last year. When she was a student of a primary school, she transferred to another school of Europe from Japan due to her father's removal.
A librarian of this school was an Aunt, and this Aunt was very strict. When Mari gave a book back to her, she always asked Mari, “Tell me about this book”.
When Mari could not explain the content lucidly, she said, “Read this book again”. By the grace of her, Mari could get the skill of language and a deep way of thinking.
Above all Mari could have enough human relations. Mari Yonehara had persuaded the importance of print-culture through her experience in a foreign country.
Recently the custom of reading has been weakening especially among young people. At the same time the more important problem has been noticed, that is, poor human relations among young people.
It is said that reading and ability of human relations are correlative. Persons who don't read books, can't get thought, vocabulary and ability of conversation. And so they tend to weaken the will of human relations.
What people can gain by reading is imaginaion, and imagination is the base of human relations.
So I agree 泉 san in some degree.
But japanese culture is known as a context way of thinking, prefer to agree each oher and avoid confliction. Therefore, japanese youth don't need much vocabulary, only need the common word to describe their feeling such like "kawaii" or "kimoi".
If japanese young people are loosing their imagination to other people and tend to be selfish, it makes me depressed.
