having many Japanese-speaking friends, and English-speaking friends, and both, I have recently realised that some people use "lol (laugh out loud)" and some use (笑)or even "www"
I just want to clarify on what other people use, or the most popular one...
I use lol when speaking/typing in English, and (笑 when in Japanese... so bit of both
I'm pretty much like you, using LOL and its variants (e.g. LMAO, ROTFLMAO, etc) when speaking/writing in English and their Japanese equivalents (e.g. (笑), ww, etc) in Japanese. I occasionally let the English ones slip into my Japanese conversation/chatting, but not the other way 'round.
yep ... for me as well: lol when writing in eigo, (笑) when writing in 日本語. same with the other expressions when there's a nihongo equiv. ... when there isn't, i just use the eigo shorthand; if the recipient doesn't understand, they can ask. ;-) same way with the ";-)" and ":-)" btw... i still chuckle at having to say, "turn your head! it's a smiley" at times...
roflmfao is sometimes suitable... sorry if one finds this too offensive.
I think some Japanese mistook lol for(笑)
I wouldn't go as far as "lol≠(笑)" but I'd say "lol ≒(笑)"
I don't hate people using lol or any other emoticons but I do get what you mean, Dylan. When "lol" is used too often, it can be very annoying to read... also, the user can appear quite stupid.
