Because of my business, I could not check all of the
comments up. I launched this community for English
speakers (or learners) to get interested in having
a communication in English...
I was so glad that a lot of people had joined and
had conversations here but also found that some
members tried to mess them up...
I just feel very sorry to see them
Recently I've got some messages from some of
the members that mentioned about the changes.
I just can't get to understand what those people are
thinking about.
I really want you to remember 'thinking of others'.
i think fair play to jimmie. it is HIS community and we are just guests. however, i think deleting the posts was a bit far. there were some legitimate topics that were quite interesting.
would it not be easier just to ban the people that abuse? i a couple may even be posting on this topic (no names mentioned).
I'm with gibbo-chan on this. There are definitely posters that "messed up" the community IMO.
Jimmie chose to delete the whole threads instead of picking the offending posts or banning the troublemakers. That may not be the best way to handle the situation, but like Jimmie himself admits, he's got work to do and can't spend 24/7 on Mixi. After all, this is his community. I'll support him.
As far as I can tell, you are not one of those who "messed up" the community. What I consider "messing up," which may differ from Jimmy's definition, includes using clearly offensive language, engaging in personal attacks (such as name calling), trolling, etc. I don't think you've done any of that.
Like I said, Jimmy chose to delete the entire threads that he deemed troublesome. It is not necessarily because everyone involved was a troublemaker. :)
trolling = picking fights for no reason, insulting ppl, generally rude behavior.
While some of the deleted topics did contain some pretty heated discussions and harsh words, I don't think there was any trolling in them that was serious enough for them to be deleted.
'Trolling' is trying to get an argument and/or flame war started for no positive reason. Flaming of course being when YOU TALK TO THE OTHER PERSON LIKE THIS!! and is the same as shouting.
For example, going to a gay site and starting the topis "You are sick and ABnormal!!" or an band's fan site and saying "Your band sucks!" 'People are going to be offended. And you start fighting the Troll...it's entertainment for them.
I enjoy very much reading the topics in this community.
But, yes, the harsh language really disturbed and scared me. For that reason, I couldn't really express what I felt regarding to the topics because I don't speak fluent english and somebody will get on me because of that.
However, I was impressed you guys can speak up with what ever you have in mind. Speak for what you think and feel is really good thing, but, don't you think we need to consider the words we use so that noone will be offended by that. I hope noone is offended by this respond.....
I agree, you can't please everyone. Some words that sound perfectly okay to you may turn out to be offensive to others, and vice versa.
There are things you can do to minimize the risk. What I do is (1) avoid using four-letter words and clearly derogatory terms (e.g. racial slurs), and (2) not engage in name-calling and personal attacks. Those may not be enough all the time, but I believe it should help you stay away from trouble. :)
perfect example of what you are talking about above (namely: chili fresh).
i ave become used to the people that say things for affect. i think maybe those people don't have much of a life and probably no friends. i'm not flaming, i'm just trying to justify their silly, boring and immature actions!! ;)
