☆ENGLISH ONLY☆コミュのWhy do Japanese women....

Why do Japanese women, or any women for that matter, carry around so many bags? I see this everyday, and sometimes its quite annoying especially on crowded trains and buses.. I'm not talking about the women with children, because I can understand that women with children need to carry around things like drinks, food, diapers, etc, so they need the extra bags. I'm talking about women who are out and about by themselves.

They carry a handbag (understandable), but why do need to carry around like tote bags, and shopping bags too. Occasionally I see them carry around small suitcases as well. What is it that they need so urgently that they have to carry it around with them wherever they go?

Maybe I'm wrong..any thoughts?

I heard it's for fashion...keeping up with the trends!

That is one of the reasons for me actually since I do boxingウッシッシ

I am one of those womenウッシッシ
I don't know about other women, but I personally like to study and read at the cafe, that's why I need a huge bag to put my books, notebooks, and 電子辞書 in.
I guess others carry makeups(including hair spray and etc), planner, and other stuff. It's also maybe the fashion.
well, American women are carrying "extra bag" within themselves.
If you know what I mean. LOL
dude, some of them actually have alotta shit so they can deal with situations they may incounter.
it makes sence.
a bottle of watter, a towl, a book, and other random things that they personally have thought before that it would be helpfull to carry around.
and just some women have aloooootta make up that they need to have with them lol
women carry around bags. Inside stuff is vital for them, but none of them is vital nor makes sense for men. A different specie.

>I heard it's for fashion...keeping up with the trends!

Ah! So some women carry around the bags to show her bag collection.
It's just the way it is. That's how they like it. :)

I carry one laptop bag around with me, and its more than enough. Without the laptop, (which I don't need everyday), I can carry all the stuff listed above.

One time I looked in a woman's shopping bag on the train, and it had sooooo much junk in it, I couldn't believe it. Food, drinks, clothes, weird women things, and other stuff buried at the bottom which I couldn't see too well. Why? Why do you need all that stuff to get from point A to point B??

What's really annoying is when the train is crowded and she bumps into with all that stuff.....or if you're sitting and that stuff is resting on her lap AND your lap too. But what's even worse are the rustlers (the people who spend the whole duration of the trip foraging for stuff, or reorganizing)...its so annoying.

>Why do you need all that stuff to get from point A to point B??

They may be moving.
Well the left picture shows everything.
she don't have a car or she loves to walk.
The dividing bag thing? im not sure...But
maybe she dicided to separate fragile things
like eggs etc.

I would believe this statement if ALL women carried around tons of bags, but they don't. It's only the small majority. And from the sampling of what I saw some of these women toting around (which is different for everyone) I wouldn't classify some of these items as "needs". I've seen some carry stuffed animals, really big mirrors, big sunglasses that cover half their faces (despite the fact that its not sunny outside), food and other so called "necessities" that are really not too necessary at all IMO.

I carry only real necessities in my bag like allergy medication, tissue, eye drops, my meishi case, charger for my mobile, and very occasionally a bottle of water. These are thing that I need to get from point A to B...other needs, I can satisfy before I leave or after I arrive.

I don't know,..I guess I'm the evil one. I guess I wouldn't mind it so much if these women didn't use me as their luggage rack while on public transportation.
i'm a female livin' in kansai. the lady in the photo you show looks like she shopped @ a few places and bought many fragile, this-side-up things that are overwrapped.
however that's why u can consume a perfect deco-cake @ home!
down here the elderly ladies (never gents!) push this JBond007-like multi-purpose granbuggy that turns into a chair <wow!>
women over 50 must carry individually wrapped candy in a pocket and always keep it loaded to be the first one to hand out the 'ame-chan' upon encounter.
mary poppins as our ancestor, our bags contain many mysterious secrets including the black hole..
its because we always concern 'emergency' and do 'just in case' things.
being worried about many things is kind of women's characteristics.
hahaわーい(嬉しい顔)
women are ,,,,mysteryous
what things are in their bags?
Ummm...I think they are make-up artist, wardrobe or runaway girl...
Maybe travelers飛行機カバン

Maybe there are a lot of travelers more than we thoughtわーい(嬉しい顔)

Now I'm getting curious about where women with cary bags go.
Maggie,

It sounds very true.

>its because we always concern 'emergency' and do 'just in case' things.

hah

Well, women are not the same..

Afterall, we still have this " Individual Differences"...

But I do not mean "needs" as in necessity. I mean " needs " as in " women's needs".

These needs are just natural among women. Others tend to forget just because they don't like to carry a lot when they travel.

In general:
<<IT'S BY NATURE GUYS,. WOMEN ARE JUST LIKE THAT>>

ウインク むふっ

women needs things.

females wallets are bigger than males.
good women carry a small towel and a pack of tissues.
smart girls read a book when they are on train or at cafe. we try to be a better woman.
pretty ladies need some makeup stuff to keep themselves pretty under any weather.
not smelly women carry a can of spray or a pack of wet tissues. most of us, dont wanna be smelly.(and I recommend to sweaty guys to use them before getting on crowded train. smelly and sweaty guys are annoying on packed train, in fact...)
and when I have gym stuff, I need another bag for wear, towel and shoes.

see, when we try to be a good, smart, pretty and not smelly, we need a satchel or hobo at least.
Im sorry for bothering you all, but please understand.
It depends on how they commute. Compare women in NYC & LA. In places where car ownership is high people carry less stuff because they have their cars to do it for them. In places where public transport is the norm people usually carry more bags.

Now how they carry their bags is a better issue to talk about. Ever notice how Japanese women walk like raptors (or other bipedal dinosaurs) when they have 2+ bags and heels?
I think women need more things to walk aroud thab men, They are more worried. I often see men with no bags on the train when I rarely see such women.
What's this "worry" all about? Worried about falling and scraping a knee so you need to carry a full first aid kit in your bag?

And these aren't travelers, or people who are coming home from shopping (I totally get the fact that they'll be carrying more stuff if they had been shopping or going somewhere)...these people are commuters that I see almost everyday on the train or bus.

And I also carry a quite a bit of stuff like my Nintendo DS, a couple of neck ties. pens, a notebook, etc...but I hardly need shopping bags and or extra tote bags to carry them.

By the way, the woman in the picture above is not coming home from shopping. I got that pic from googling the phrase "a woman carrying a lot of junk" in Japanese. Even the some train companies see it as a "phenomenon", because they've even made signs about about. The one above is not the one I was really for. The one I was really looking for is in this post.
What I have to say is I think it is a natural woman thing to do. My father, he often calls me bag lady, and rarely do I ever go anywhere with less then 4 bags. Its not that I necessarily use everything I have with me, its not the case at all.

Women are known to "think ahead" where men are known to "think on the spot" This is why many woman freak out when something doesn't go as planned, myself included. Therefore, a woman packs many things with her when she goes places. Just because YOU don't think it is essential doesn't mean SHE doesn't think it is essential.

I think everyone should take things into persective. Unless you actually interview these woman and ask where they are going and why they have the things they have, you have no right to go against it.

I went into Chicago by train, I am from a suburb, and stayed there a few days. I had suitcases and other bags with my mom. Nobody asked us why we had so many bags and ended up taking 4 seats instead of 2.

Maybe, to help your issue with women with heavy baggage, I think an area should be designed for people who have more bags. That way, you don't have to see them and they don't have to hear you complain.
Mirai,

I cannot imagine that you haven't been benefited because a girl packs for the emergency. I know I have helped out many guys when I have packed something that they find they need. It may have been your own relative, but you were benefited by woman being prepared ahead of time at least once.

And, don't you think it is a bit selfish for guys to not wear sufficient deoderant when its a hot day?
>Women are known to "think ahead" where men are known to "think on the spot"

a good phrase!

in other words, women try to take home everywhere they go while men don't care about it. Women are home oriented, security oriented. They don't like change, conservative.
lol This is just dumb.

You don't know where these women are coming from or headed to, or what they do there and what they need to bring for it. Maybe their reasons are as understandable as moms with kids' crap or maybe they wish they didn't have to carry all that stuff. You don't know. lol

And what's with all the stereotyping??? I know plenty of guys who are a pack rat. I'm a Japanese girl but I hate carrying around crap; my bag content is very minimal and sometimes I leave the house with just cash in my backpocket. See how silly this is..lol
individual differences are there, of course. Some don't fit in the stereotype for sure.
One is usually used to carry all the sex toys, as sex toys are quite popular here and also quite elaborate. When my wife and I travel we always take her favorite one. It is called Jack!
btw, Ive seen Akihabara guys whose backpack has no space, fully packed. I have no idea whats in it but some guys needs to carry things too!
アイラ, you must not be Japanese because according to the OP, every Japanese woman must carry a bunch of bags with tens of items in each of them! LOL
