I have some friends who visited Tokyo for business last year. Their main issues were the expense of stay and language problem. So, I would like to hear and share your experience of staying at hotels in Tokyo. I would be grateful if you could leave some comments.
Price shopping is a big problem if you are from out of town. Many of the good deals are not posted online or listed with the travel agencies. Because it is hard tofind a clean cheap place, you get what you pay for. I found a nice hotel near my house for my friends, it's listed as a family hotel but rated very low. The rate was 6000 for the family of 3 ( adults and 1 child) but that did not include any meals. It is located about 5 minutes from the station in Western Tokyo, so not a prime location for most Tokyo travelers. Other hotels int he are would have been around 15000.
On the other hand, the cheapest Japanese Style Inn I have found was in a small town called Ome, the rate was 12000 per person during the off season including breakfast and dinner. And this was a GREAT deal.
Recently Sanya city become popular among tourist from foreign countries.
The city is located in Tokyo and easy to go to Asakusa(popular sightseeing place) There are VERY cheap hotels at there.
Formerly known as a dangerous area filled with day laborers, But the old Sanya is slowly changing now.
I put the link of the city's article! http://mdn.mainichi.jp/features/archive/news/2008/09/20080904p2a00m0na016000c.html
I always stay at this one in Meguro right next to the station.
There are much better deals but when you consider location
[right next to JR Meguro],
cleanliness, size, internet, awesome ramen places down the street;
it's pretty good.
Also it helps that my friend's bar open til 5am++ is across the
street. So I can basically crawl into bed after much drukenness
:D
I also want to add that the Rakuten site is really good. But when
choosing a hotel in Tokyo, also consider the train/subway. Depends on
what
you're there for but if you expect to go clubbin a lot, you don't
want to be far from those areas, etc.

I think Japan can be very expensive at the hight end of town
but you can get some good accommodation for a very reasonable
price if you make an effort. For me a hotel is a bed and nothing
else so I tend to go for budget. Maybe the most I have ever paid
was in Kyoto which was 9500-en per night, I could have got a
similar room without a shower / toilet for 7600-en but it's nice
to have a shower you can call your own.
I never stay in Tokyo...I usually stay in Chiba at the Kashiwa
Plaza Hotel. Rooms there start at 5500-en per night and it's only a
short train trip to Ueno Station and from there you can go wherever.
ヒトシ Serviced apartments are usually for longer stays and I found when I looked into them they were often full in the areas I wanted (or just too expensive!). Great to see these hotel links though, I know where I'll be staying if I can't stay with friends next time in Tokyo.
Yeah, I don’t think it’s difficult to find hotel less than 10,000yen in Tokyo. If you look well you can find in city side.
NYC is a lot expensive than any other city. Even $30 Motel level hotel cost over $200 in Manhattan. They claimed it’s hotel but inside is like dirtier than motel in other city…
Anyway have you check out this place? They’re located in very convenient location in Aoyama only 5mins walk from the subway station. Hotel staff can speak English, a lot of foreign tourists or sometimes business people stay there.
But since it’s in good location and affordable rate, it maybe difficult to book on busy season. Early advance reservation is recommended if you already know the date.
I most always stayed in business hotels in Japan which were 5000 - 8000 Yen per night. Compare that to hotel prices in Germany, japanese hotels are very affordable. If you still want to pay less, check out for youth hostel or something like that, but to be honest I don't fancy sharing bathroom and bedroom with total strangers.
the major difference is that hotels in japan tend to charge per person, whereas hotels in western countries tend to charge per room. so if you're travelling alone, it doesn't make much difference, but ina group, it does.
