I'm gettin old and I really should start payin attention to politics but it's jus not my favorite subject.
Anyways, I am sooooo confused about what's going on between Obama & Rod Blagojevich. I see bits and pieces on the news everyday and i tried to do some research but im COMPLETELY lost. Okay so how did Blagojevich tried to "sell" obama's senate seat? Hows that possible and what's gonna happen to him???
Thanxx guys any info would be real helpful..... & Happy Holidays!! It's freezing in SF, and apparently snowing in my hometown Seattle...stay warm everyone : )
Hi, まゆみsan!
It's impossible to "sell Obama's senate seat".
What Blagojevic did was to try to give the highest bidder a high-paying job, promises of campaign funds, a Cabinet post or corporate-board seats, which automaticlly makes him a Senator.
He is also charged of manipulating state governmet to enrich himself and his family, use his authority to withhold funding for a children's hospital until one of it's executives would write a $50,000 check and imidate the Chicago Tribune into firing editorial writers who had criticized him.
I'm not sure whats going to happen to him, but if he is found guilty, I'm sure he's going to be behind bars for some time.
Do you get it so far?? I'm not so sure if I got everything perfect, but I think thats about everythig that happened.
Its also real cold here in Japan. I didn't dream it would be so cold!
But I'm looking foward to being back in the states fo the holidays.
Take care!!
Hehe, I grew up in Illinois politics. Here's the reader's digest version:
The basics: every state has two US senators, who are chosen in an election every six years. Obama is/was one of the senators from Illinois, so once he becomes president his seat will be empty. And in Illinois (maybe everywhere, I'm not sure) when a senate seat goes empty, the Governor gets to pick a new senator. In this case that governor is Rod "Blago" Blagojevich, so he's the guy who gets to pick Obama's successor. (He's also a crazy dipshit, as we shall see.)
Now to the scandal: In theory, Blago is supposed to just appoint the best person for the job. In practice, of course, US Senator is a very powerful position, so it would be normal for Blago to appoint a close political ally, or someone he owes a debt to. In this case, however, he went a lot farther: basically he put the position up for sale. He made it known that he would appoint whomever gave him the best offer (money, or a cushy job for him or his wife, etc).
Of course he got caught, because he was already under federal investigation so his phones were tapped. This is what makes the whole thing bizarre - it was widely known in Illinois that he was under investigation, so it's kind of insane that he was just boppin' around the office talking about this stuff on the phone. It's like trying to sell drugs inside a police station. But anyway.
So how does this ties in with Obama? The short answer is, so far it doesn't. Blago and Obama both come from Chicago politics, and they know each other and have worked with all the same people, but Obama doesn't seem to be involved in this. Just the opposite, actually - Blago is on tape saying that the Obama team turned him down, saying: "They're not willing to give me anything except appreciation. Fuck them."
So at this point, the scandal doesn't appear to involve Obama at all, except that he knows all the people involved. Let me know if any of this isn't clear!
Blagojevich tried to get people to bribe him for that Senate spot. Here are some quotes to put it in perspective:
On Nov. 3, Blagojevich told Adviser A: "I’m going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain. You hear what I’m saying. And if I don’t get what I want and I’m not satisfied with it, then I’ll just take the Senate seat myself." Blagojevich described the Senate seat as "a (expletive) valuable thing, you just don’t give it away for nothing."
On Nov. 7, Blagojevich discussed the Senate seat with Harris and Adviser B, a Washington-based political consultant. They discussed a deal that would name Blagojevich to a high-paying job with a group affiliated with the Service Employees International Union. "I want to make money," Blagojevich said.
During a two-hour telephone conversation with various people on Nov. 12, Blagojevich talked about securing high-paying jobs for him and his wife in exchange for the Senate seat. He said he is "struggling" financially and does "not want to be governor for the next two years."
I'm glad I read this thread, too. I had a rough idea what was going on, but I just could not believe my own understanding because, hey, who in the right mind would try to bid for a Senate position among all the political scandals going around?
