Just exchange USA for your country when applicable if you are not from the United States...

The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of it's releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

D.  A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain...let's take a look at New Orleans  ..
It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for 250  BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild  New Orleans Interesting number...what does it mean?

A. Well... if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child)
you each get $516,528.

B. Or... if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.

C.  Or... if you are a family of four... your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington, D. C HELLO! Are all your calculators broken??

High taxation and financial burdens don't plague only people in the US. For example in Germany the effective situation for employees look like this:

Income tax: 15 - 42%
Annuity insurance: 9.95%
Unemployment insurance: 1.65%
Health insurance: 6.95%
Nursing insurance: 1.10%
______________________________
Overall deduction: 34.65% - 61.65%

Now this is just an basic and easy version, neglecting any further special deductions. It also has to be mentioned that in practice you won't see anything of the money you paid for annuity insurance anymore. The national pension system is outdated and incapable. To get anything in old age, you need to sign an additional private old age pension system beside the compulsory one (in other countries such a thing would be called robbery).

The taxes and dues are just one side of the medal, the other one are incomes and those stagnate since 1990s in most branches, while large companies reached record turn overs. In effect it lead to the crown of world exporter no. 1 for germany industry and at the same time to notable contractions of the domestic market, as people didn't had money to consume.

Back to the US now, the financial crisis and the trade deficit looks so severe as the US market traditionally seem to be an consumer market - like Japan - where money is spent rather then saved.
Yeah, I agree with you on this; Politicians use the word "billion dollars" so easily without thinking carefully. I want them to have responsible for their words and improve the way to use our money wisely, too.

I think taxes are OK. I want to drive on a nice road,
have a good hospital to treat me if I have a heart attack,
send my kids to a good school that the government pays
for.
What I don't like is that the extremely rich pay less
tax than I do but use more of the infrastructure.
