Canberra has recently seen a rise in people copying lower and working class British youth culture. Especially, the wearing of branded casual and sporting clothes, and vulgar speech and/or mannerisms and surly attitudes. Many of theme seem to be lifted directly out of the Catherine Tate Show. Is it okay to term these kids as "chavs"? Or is that offensive? What do people reckon?
Respect for the feelings of the violent and often stupid underclass, especially those whose aim is to be offensive to those not like them, is of great importance to me.
Normally I would not want to label anyone (I have a doctorate in sociology, so I know the power of such negative labels). It is interesting to me that this trend has so quickly soread to Australia (or at least my part of it). I guess it is the same as other pop trends.
Being from England, in which the "Chav" craze started and is still ongoing, I'd like to say that it is an offence word... Should you call anyone in England this 99% of the time they would take offence. The insinuations meant by this word arent exactly positive ones... Being "underclass", "violent", "rude"...and just generally a pain in everyones neck XD
Nobody really lieks Charva's...except other charva's XD
