I was wondering if there was a US English for "bastard" (as in a man who treats you badly, especially in a relationship). It would be the male version of "bitch". My boyfriend has been in NZ too long and I can't trust his US English anymore!! I found bad boy, but that just seemed too nice.
As someone who's only left America once, and for a month at that, I can tell you that "bastard"is a perfectly fine American English word and is used to mean exactly what you want it to mean.
We use bastard a lot in British (or NZ) English and often about a man who treats us badly in a relationship. I just haven't heard it as much here and in that way...do you think asshole is more common? mind you it might just be that I am in the Northwest and they might be different.
We (Americans) use "bastard", but more in mock-anger than actual anger. When we use it seriously it tends to be more in the "ruthless bastard" sense, than the "I'm angry at him" sense.
I think the most general word for what you want is asshole. Of course sonuvabitch and motherfucker are always options. It kind of comes down to what you can say without sounding silly...
And yeah, "wank" (and hence "wanker") aren't much use in the US - even if the listener knows what you mean, to American ears they sound stilted. (Similarly, "arsehole" sounds positively Victorian.)
To me Wank or Wanker would be like calling a person a
"Looser". Of course a Bastard is a person that doesn`t know who their father is but translates into them being assholes. Fuckhead, Shit head, are also good alternatives :)
You guys are great and I agree rejoice of liberty, fenomas you really made me laugh. My guy thought we used arsehole because we thought asshole was too rude. Had to straighten him out on that one. Arse is authentic!
And you're right about "ass/arse". Though it's worth mentioning that "ass" didn't develop as a matter of politeness, but as a side effect of the "r" not getting pronounced - the same process that developed "bust" (from "burst") and "cuss" (from "curse").
I feel fully validated as an English English speaker , thanks so much! Haha the differences make it all the more interesting, don't you think?
>All,
I was writing something on Bitches and Bastards but I really did not know how to translate bastard into US English (in the way I meant). Asshole is going to fit perfectly - thank you all!!!
Haha, Initially, "bastard" was used the same way as most other english-speaking countries' but, yeah, I think bastard is usually used, now,as mock anger, like Fenomas said. That's usually how I use it anyways.
Haha, I just had a discussion with my younger sister who thought that it was ok to say, "arsehole" because it wasn't really cursing, like "asshole". I still think that she's unconvinced. lol
