Now, everyone has at one time or another been confronted with stereotypes, whether they be on someone of a different race, religion, or background. I will name a few that I myself have been stereotyped on (I will remind you, that I am Jewish).
TYPICAL JEWISH STEREOTYPES:
1) Big nose 2) Loves money more than anything 3) Smart 4) Quiet & Shy 5) Wears Glasses 6) Dark Hair 7) Has a nagging, over bearing Mother 9) Always cheap 10) Shrewd at business
And there are others, but some best left unsaid.
Now, because of stereotypes, people find themselves judging others subconsciously, regardless of their actual knowledge on the subject. This can be frustrating when meeting new people, etc.
@ mleko:
Oh yes, I've heard LOTS of Polish stereotypes. But I've noticed that overall, Polish neighborhoods are the cleaner ones. When I lived in California, I would often see women out scrubbing the sidewalks.
German, atheist => Rasist, amoral prick in the states, workaholic with a bit of racism mixed in for most of europe. Oh and I dont have humor. For most of asia and arabia there seems to be no rasicm <-> german connection unless there are many americans or europeans around to teach them that we are rasists. We germans are the japanese of europe. Or they are the prussians of asia. (xenophobic/rasist, workaholic, rich) But we're not smiling all the time (or at all for that matter) and dont carry cameras around, so thats different.
Um, you know the one about australians having kangaroos as pets? well, I've moved to a country town and my neighbour seems to have a kangaroo as a pet... I brought it up at work and one of the other teachers (who is a local) said that they've had that kangaroo a long time... It's just a bit creepy when I'm bringing in the laundry and feel like someone is watching me... It's the kangaroo...

Russsiaannnnnnnn! 8D
The main stereotype I hear on Russians is that they drink too much. Vodka with breakfast, Vodka with lunch, Vodka at teatime, Vodka at Supper. Now, for those of us that aren't completely ignorant, we know this not to be true... but this is what people like to mutter about.
Haha! Eurasians. I smile about this, maybe because I've read too many comic books, but you hit that one dead on. Sort of like the Kimora Lee Simmons fetish, but I guess that's more Afroasian. I'd say the contrast is more unique, than anything else. My Great-Grandmother is Hungarian (well, okay... JEWISH Hungarian, to be exact) and Mongolian. She's was never an 'exotic beauty', but she has some unique features.
ロス:
Nothing wrong with that!
I think there is a certain human need to be recognized apart from the rest of the crowd... or nationalities if you will. So wanting to take on your 'stereotype' may just be another form of finding 'individuality', be it seperation from the misunderstanding that people have of you being American.
That perhaps makes no sense at all written out, but it somehow made sense when it was in my head.
Kimi:
I always heard the Japanese as being more referred to in relation to the French, rather like the Lebanese. They say the 'Japanese are the French of Asia', or you know... 'The Lebanese are the French of the Middle East', and so-on. The biggest German stereotype I'VE heard, probably is the accent, always talking gutturally or through their noses, and talking about "schnitzel". Safe to say, the friends I've had from Germany have actually never talked about schnitzel, and don't talk gutturally, OR through their noses.
echelle23:
Kangaroos?! That's hilarious.
I have a few Aussie friends. But one in particular likes to tell people that she goes to work on a Kangaroo, and sends mail by boomerang, which I thought was pretty funny, though it's an obvious joke.
> Ashley
Really? Perhaps its a german thing then. I think the phrase is from around 1900 when Japans Civil code, constitution and army were quite heavily influenced by the prussian/german ones.
Also you're missing out on some delicious sterotypes there.
I live in Texas...
I'm sure the stereotypes are forming in your head already:
Owns a truck
Owns an oil field
Owns a cow
Wears cowboy hat and boots
Has a thick, unintelligible accent
Can't dance unless at least one hand is on a shiny, over-sized belt buckle
Listens to gawd-awful country music
Hates Oklahoma and refuses to acknowledge the existence of Alaska
Thinks the word "shit" has two syllables
Owns a firearm
Well, that's not me! (OK, I plead the 5th on the first and last ones)
And yes, everything IS bigger in Texas... like property taxes, egos, and drinking binges!
Also, being German and Swedish, I hear my share of stereotypes about gas-chambers and blond porno...
I used to joke with my Japanese friends while I was over there about how Koala steaks were really delicious and they're easy to get with kangaroos and koalas in the back yard... FYI- Not all Aussies drink beer... (Some of us prefer wine and spirits...lol)
Loves Football
Drinks pints of beer
Always has an umbrella
Wears full suit with bowler hat.
Only drinks tea.
Talks like Hugh Grant (maybe not for the ladies..)
Eats fish and chips
Despite speaking like hugh grant he also can speak cockney
Andrew:
That sounds just like a Texan... except for the tornadoes and teepees...
With all the similarities, why can't Texans and Oklahomans get along?
Oh yeah... UT/OU...
It's that damn "likes football way too much" thing...
- Is stuck up, spoiled, snobby
- Filthy rich
- Lives in a mansion
- Life-resemblance of the show O.C.
- Blonde's, blue eyed, tan, skinny as hell
- Spends more money in a day than a person earns in years
- Has nice, fancy cars
- Wears designer clothing
- Has had plastic surgery; more than once is major kudos
I think I'm missing a lot... but those are the major ones, at least for me who is a full-bred SoCal ifornian
I'm thunderstruck that anyone thinks that Socal people drive fast. I've driven in tons of other cities, and LA undoubtedly has the slowest drivers in the world.
Oh wow, I laughed so hard when I read that I started choking.
But actually, right now you are missing one or two stereotypes!
Everyone says "Oh no! NOT TEXAS!" (this is for real) and now people claim that Texas is where all the polygamists go. Fun fun.
WHUT, you plead the fifth?!
Haha, the way you described Country music pretty well fits my opinion of it.
I haven't heard most of those stereotypes, but now that I've seen them presented, it's funny how well they fit in with the image in my head.
Southern Californian Stereotype!
Wow, there are so many more to be added to that list, but you guys have definitely skimmed the top layer.
It's funny how everyone who isn't from California always assumes that you know movie stars, or make regular trips to Hollywood, and have tea with Tom Hanks, or something.
I can't even tell you how many times I've been asked by people to get George Clooney's autograph for them, and I'm left thinking, "Wait, WHUT?!"
@ discoscience:
Well hey, why not?!
Some people take advantages of stereotypes like that, and so that sort of behavior becomes expected. Haha, none the less!
Fish and chips! Ahaha, that's hilarious.
Oh, and you forgot---British NEVER show emotion. I hear that one all the time.
Also, supposedly Brits also prefer bland flavorless food?
And they always wear trench-coats, looking Sherlock-Holmes-esque.
Oh my god, I know! Everybody always thinks that everybody in SoCal (at least) knows celebrities just because we live near Hollywood or something, or even if you don't live near Hollywood, they do! Haha, it's really funny...
brightonlove===>
Then you haven't been living in SoCal long enough! Haha, and by the way, people drive slow in Los Angeles because there is so much traffic and also because tons of tourists don't know the freeways, which I feel bad about when people come to SoCal because we have insane freeways...
Some random stereotypes I've gotten because I'm black:
-great at sports (I'm tall so everyone assumes I'm a great basketball player)
-lived a very bad life
-can only speak "ebonics"
-can't tan
-have a big butt
-snappy; have a bad attitude
-only listen to hip-hop and R&B
-not interested in things outside of "black culture"
Some random stereotypes I've gotten because I'm an artist
-flighty; head is always in the clouds
-can't get a "real" job
-have very bad fashion sense
I'm Polish and the most common stereotypes are (I think) that we drink a lot and that everyone is a thief (come to Poland , you're car is already there :D) All of theme are of course untrue :D
Another stereotype (but not connected with nationality) is that if a man have long hairs and wears black , he must be a satanist :D and since I have long hairs and wear black most of the time , so I'm sometimes mistook as one (and that is ,of course, also untrue :D)
I have gotten told that I was smart for a black person by a Chinese lady. I told her what I did for work and she was so suprised. She assumed that black people are only good at sports and music.
I am a socal native and I totally understand those stereotypes. Just because I dont speak "ghetto" people call me white washed. Whatever that means.
In middle school I lived with my grandparents in South Carolina for one semester, while my mom attended a school in Florida (she was in the military). Everyday we were teased for having a "white" accent (note: this school only had 2 white kids) and the high schoolers on the bus always made my little brother spell "Mississippi" just so they could make fun of the way he said it. They also bullied me by stealing my flute and breaking it. It just goes to show that children nowadays need to be taught more about the world, seeing as it's becoming slightly more integrated or else they'll be stuck being narrow-minded.
Hey, you guys brought up a good one, but a touchy one!
It was funny though, because I dated a guy from Jamaica, and he would never refer to himself as "Black" (and he wasn't African-American, so...) but "Jamaican Mon!". But he had a few stereotypes on Jamaicans he gave me:
-Everyone smokes a doobie
-Everyone has dreads
-Everyone lives in a shack on the beach
-Everyone has killed at least three people
-Everyone says 'mon' in every sentence
-Everyone only listens to Reggae and Bob Marley
-Bob Marley is G*D
-Everyone still lives with their Mammy
-Everyone is a drug dealer
-Everyone can Dance
-Everyone practices Voodoo
Just to name a few that he mentioned in his frustration,
Also, I have a lot of family in the Deep South, so I hear lots of other African American, and Cajun stereotypes from there too. Most of them having something or other to do with Voodoo.
