Hi, I am very sorry for a silly question, and I would like to keep personal things aside such as your feelings about freeters and etc..

But I am a 18 year old guy, and Id like to live in Japan for a while, and I have significant funds for doing so, so I can afford an apartment for a while and such..

But my question is, is it possible for a foreigner in japan, to become a freeter, meaning part-time work only?

If it IS POSSIBLE, what visa/permits would I need and how would I obtain them, or do you not need a work visa? Because Ive heard from outside sources that you dont need a work visa for part time work..

Thank you, and I hope you can help me out by answering this, for me and my friend ^^b

P.S. If anyone wants to know why I want to become a freeter, its because theres other dreams I want to pursue (becoming a DJ and music producer) besides typical work such as doctor, teaching, business/corperate, etc.

There are a few ways... you need a work visa (and probably sponsorship) of some type if you want it to be legal.

But you can legally work in exchange for food and rent.

The easiest way is to sign up for WWOOF. It costs $50 and basically it is a big list of places in Japan that will give you a place to stay and free food for 20 hours (maximum) work per week. It was started just for farms but it also has some ski resorts and English schools. Generally there is a good family environment and you can even find some places that will give you a bit of cash on the side, your own little house, a scooter to use or will take you out to places often.

The cost of rent in a sharehouse (at sakurahouse, also recommended for renting) and food in Japan would be about 12,000 yen per week and food would make that at least 20,000, (about $180 American per week). So the work is for about $10 American per hour. So this is the best deal as part time work in Japan is only paid about this much. With this job though you can quickly jump from city to city or stay in one place for a whole year. If you don't like your job/boss I recommend that you move because there are some truly great people and places in this programme.

Looks like you speak a bit of Japanese so you will probably be able to get a place at one of the better locations.

If this isn't your cup of tea you can also look for ski resorts that will sponsor you, but generally they will want you to work about 40 hours per week, the pay is not much better than WWOOF and you don't get to experience typical Japanese family life.

The final solution is to get a visa, the easiest of these is the "Working holiday visa" which is valid for 3 years if you can show that you have at least $5000 or around there.
I don't think that Americans are eligible though, but you might want to check. If you have or can get Canadian, English or Australian citizenship then you're OK though. This lets you do about 20 hours per week and you can get any job. So maybe this is better if you want to live in the city. The Japanese countryside is much better than the cities though (but it's all good) so you will probably find WWOOF more enjoyable.

Hope that I could help you.
Yes, you can become a freeter. there are a couple diffrent ways.

1st. you can marry a japanese girl. there are some very beautiful girls in Japan.

2nd. you can have a japanese man legally adopt you then you will be his dependent. (i dont know if your real father would like that)

3rd. you can get a part-time job which pays over ¥240,000. per month, then you should be able to get a work visa.

4th. you can become an illegal resident, but if you are caught you will get kicked out the country or put in jail, or both.

5th. you can get a full-time job in which you will get a working visa and then you quit, and then you will still have your working visa. (which will probably expire in 1 year. (your first working visas are usually only 1 year at a time)

I think the 3rd and 5th choices are your best bet, if you are american (we cant get the working holiday like the canadians and austrailians)

Haha, I love idea number 2 Brown eyes.

Sounds like a good way to get around it and I'm sure that you could find someone to do it for a small fee. Do you have any idea if there is an age limit though?
I think that would only depends on what country you will be coming from....
