We all miss food from back home, or good food to which we had access back home that is unavailable in Tokyo. Or maybe it is available but we don't know about it... This topic is set up to share information on restaurants or foodstuffs that might appeal to us gaijin.

In particular, I miss good Mexican and good pizza. There are other things I miss, like a good egg cream, or espresso sodas from Manhattan Special, but Mexican and pizza are up there. I also miss good diner food (who can say not to a really good bacon egg and cheese on a roll for breakfast?)

So for those who, simialr to me, miss these sort of things, I offer some information to start off the topic.

Fo Mexican- Fonda de la Madrugada in Harajuku or La Jolla. Both would not pass the test in NY or LA, but it the closest I could find to Tex-Mex in Tokyo. I actually like La Jolla better as the food is better and dirt cheap! But gourmet it is not.

Pizza- Brendan's Pizzakaya in Nishi Azabu. Closest to NY style I could find so far. and they deliver! however, they take good pizza and mess it up a bit. it seems just a little off each time i order.
In Shibuya Lombardi's ahd a chain for a while, but closed down quickly.
EggCream- you gotta make it yourself.

Please add to this topic if you know of food that yo miss at home but can get a facsimile of it here.

>> I'd always thought Japanese were really into food!!?

I am, but I live in the States and don't remember much about the food and restaurants in Japan anymore. :(

All my Japanese friends say they miss Japanese food. I may be strange, but I don't. There are a few good Japanese restaurants where I live. I can go to one of them if I have a sudden craving.
I said "mama papa" stores instead of "mom and pop" stores there....overseas home syndrome kicking in again : (

20> hey there : )
yeah it's great you don't miss Japanese food too much - what's your favourite type of 'western' food?

21> ahhhh
Anna Miller's is the closest I find to diner type sandwiches. IF you haven't ahd their tuna melt yet, it is worth a try.

The deli at the PArk Hyatt is pretty good. Pricey though.

I hear that a real Jewish deli opened up somewhere... anyone know any details? I f I find out I will post.

I too am concerned that not a lot of mixi citizens aer not chiming in, I hope they aren't starving somewhere...
Hi!

My favourite food is actually Chinese. Nothing gorgeous or expensive like in "Ishingo" in Tokyo - all I need is everyday food such as chicken fried rice, mongolian beef, chow mein, etc.

If you want me to choose from the Western food, it has to be BBQ. I love grilled beef and chicken. We used our BBQ grill almost every other day this summer. :)
hey guys,
just came back from a very pleasant lunch at the cafe they got there on the upmteenth floor at the Hyatt (not the one with the quasi-dress code, the other one...?...sorry forgot the name already) - I had a pretty good ciabata sandwich, and a bloody fine cup of tea if I do say so myself!
Yeah, I remember you told me about the deli over there before cohiba so thanks for that...(bought some peppered ham and olives for lunch tomorrow)

23> "I hope they aren't starving somewhere..." - 10/10!!

24> mmm Chinese, I know you're not in Japan, but for anyone in Tokyo there's a neat little place in Roppongi Hills called Nanxiang manjyuten - they only serve steamed buns, but that's the beauty of it....
BBQ is good! I wonder if anyone knows any good places to get some decent ribs??

cheers
>> they only serve steamed buns

Nikuman and an-man? Sounds yummy! I should remember to check out that place when I go to Tokyo the next time.

As for ribs, do you have Tony Roma restaurants in Tokyo?
hi there だいはど,
yeah nikuman, anman, shumai, the odd spring roll...I just like the way they stack up the steaming wooden trays full of manjyu and you pile through them while they're still scorching hot....it's like being in a Jackie Chan movie : )

Haven't seen T.Roma's in Tokyo....I'd love to see something like Peter Luger's over here too - I was actually a bit disappointed with P.Luger's when I went over there in Brooklyn though. Got a german waiter who constantly goaded me about how bad English beer is....but who can refuse an honest to goodness steak dinner...

I think cohiba knows a lot of good steak places in Tokyo?
There is a Tony Romas in Roppongi, below the Hard Rock and another one in Omotesando, in the bldg Avex is in. The ribs at TGI Fridays are about the same quality. The Cardenias grill in ebisu has got some good ribs...

Peter Luger's is excellent. THe staff is a bit pertentious though... I always liked Smith & Wollensky's better though. the service tends to be better there.

for cheap good chinese i like China Cafe 8 close to Roppongi Hills (across the street from the Hyatt).

Good steak places are aplanty in Tokyo. don't even know where to begin... the Oregon grill used to be hip a few months ago.
Rather than food I could just cook myself, I find I wind up missing junk food from back home. Stuff like black licorice, coffee crisp bars, and chips that don't have seafood in them.
For a long time I really missed root-beer, but I've since found a few places that sell it here.
>> Good steak places are aplanty in Tokyo.

I know beef in general is very expensive in Japan. Do those steak places have reasonably priced steaks?
Global Dining is bringing Kripsy Kreme to Tokyo soon.
This comes straight from the CEO, who is an acquaintance of mine.
I don't really miss any food from 'back home'*, but I do miss how much cheaper and available it was compared to here. That's my only complaint.

*I guess I do wish I had some American mustard. I really dislike the mustard here--but that's it!
French's.. aaaah, the best hot dog mustard. I was moer of a Goulden's (sp.?) guy myself. Always hated Grey Poupon....
People might not know this, but Nathan's hotdogs has a stand/small restaurant next to the Gap in Harajuku.
How well is Krispy Kreme doing in Japan? Are they faring well against local chains like Mr. Donuts?
I'm stuck on scrambled eggs in America.
What they put on that?
Smell like a scent.
Nathan's Hotdogs in Harajuku!?!?
That's crazy!
Nathan's makes me think of Coney Island Brooklyn. It's not so far from me.

Mr. Donut was a USA chain, wasn't it, before going to Asia? I used to see them in the 1970s when I was a kid. In Japan I jokingly refer to it as "Donut San," but nobody ever thinks this is funny except for other Americans.
I'm just not particularly fond of the Japanese mustard that they apply to sandwiches here. I love spicy food, and I love hot food--but I just don't like the taste of horseraddish--from any country, region, etc. Standard mustard here has the same kinda bite as wasabi and the hot mustard. My main issue is that the taste, besides not being good, is so strong that I can't taste anything else but it. Anyway, horseraddish and mustard are my only gripes--and, at the end of the day, if those are my worst gripes then I think I'm doing just fine! (^0^)
Hi David.

>> Mr. Donut was a USA chain, wasn't it, before going to Asia?

Was it? I had no clue. We sure don't see it in the U.S. anymore. I'd think they would survive if places like Dunkin' Donuts are still around. Oh well. (^^;;)
I'm not sure but I think Mr.Doughnut/Donut ended up being bought out by the Japanese arm and only remains successful here. A bit like the way the Japanese arm of McDonalds basically props up the domestic american end (not sure if I read that or dreamt it...anyway).
Didn't they have a news story a while back about how American Dunkin' Donut staff were doing naughty man things to the donuts before they reached the customer's mouths?
I remeber a Mr. Donut on Long Island. The only one I saw in the States.

Long live Krispy Kreme!!! I think the one they are opening will be in Roopongi Hills.

Donut PLant seems to be doing well here.

I did erad that the male staff at DD were doing man things to the donuts, but I think now it is more of an urban legend.

Also note: you can get Taco Bell, but you have to be on the American base.... and you can get A&W in Okinawa! good chili dogs!

I miss a good chili dog... or good chili for that matter....
I love Taco Bell. A lot of locals here prefer Taco Time, but I can't live without Taco Bell's oily burritos. :)
I sure wish we had Mosburger here. Their rice burger is yummy! I like the way they prepare the food (i.e. cook it after they take the order). I can live with McD's, but taste-wise it's no match.
We have "In & Out" Burger in California.
I have definitely had better burgers, but if you have
never had "In & Out" Burger before, the taste is
similar to Wendy's minus the "finger chili."
Just kidding.
I am originally from NY, so when I came out to Cali, I
noticed the indigenous food chains out here. Some are
better... some are worse. I can say that I wasn't too
impressed with "In & Out" Burger. I mean the name
"In & Out" alone says it all. In one end, and out the
other. When I first tried it, they defied all the
basic health issues any food establishment should
heed. First off, a construction worker was taking a
shower using the men's room sink
(You will never find such a nasty thing in Japan). I
have another story about "In & Out" Burger that is even
worse. Some teenagers were shooting a documentary
about fast food restaraunts like "Supersize Me."
Except they were inducing vomitting with a plastic
straw and video taping it all.
All of this very close to the area where everyone
orders their food.
So, we could all see the guy vomitting while standing
in line. Talk about "having it your way right away."
If you are interested in New York style Chinese (if you've been theer you know what I mean) rather than your typical Japanese crap, try China Cafe 8 in Ebisu or Roppopngi Hills....

That new ice cream place in the Hills is good too!
Catfish- yum! Go to Boubon Street in Roppongi for good blackened catfish

Frogs legs- yum! NAthans doesn't have them

Does anyone know where to get French Dip sandwiches? the roast beef sandwich you dip into au jus? Sometimes I get a craving for that...
Cohiba,

I like catfish, too. Tried it with some "dirty rice" in Houston a few years ago - the Cajun food was good there. I've also had Crocodile meat before. Tasted like chicken. :-)

I don't think I want to try frog legs anytime soon, though.
Stuff I still miss in Tokyo
I miss WhiteCAstle...
I miss Popeye's Chicken (I have to go to Seoul to get that).
I miss the dining room at the UN building... Sweet heaven!

WHere can one get a good Philadelphia style cheesesteak sandwich in TOkyo?
50> yeah!! wow, a real NY'er recommended the place I mentioned that I liked in comment numero uno!!

man, I'm feeling so smug now... : )
I've tried Natto... I'm not sure there's anything more unusual than that. :*(
I had some interesting meats when I was in Africa. In Tokyo you can get: horse (yum!), raw chicken (yum!- tastes like chicken!), auk (yum!), crocodile (too rubbery), kangaroo (yum!), live river eel (yum!), rabbit (very yum!), scorpion (eh), bunch of other bugs (?! haven't tried them yet), goat penis, rhino horn, seahorse, blowfish (yum!), blowfish gonads (yum!), shark fin (yum). NOt complete list, but what I have seen or tried so far....
I've ha the chessesteak at TGI's but it is not very good. and it is not a real philly cheesesteak. God I miss a good sandwich.
