Thanksgiving, I think, is one of the best holidays to get together with family. As Christmas is a holiday to spend time with the family, watching the beautiful snow drop and giving gifts, Thanksgiving is a holiday to spend time with the family, watch the beautiful leaves drop, and giving thanks.
On Thanksgiving, despite of having my family not as close as the average family around the world, we get together and have a wonderful dinner.
Also, I believe this day is a big day for American Football. I don't watch American Football that much on TV, so I have no idea why.
Most people get together with their extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc.) and eat a large meal and spend the day together. Besides the stress of preparing the meal, it is one of the more relaxing holidays in america, where as christmas is usually stressful.

Thanks for your comments.
I agree partly to that a New Year holiday for family reunion with celebration in Japan! So there surely is a day for family reunion in Japan in that meaning.
But as for a New Year, I think that american also spend their times with the family as well as Japanese do. Is that rihgt?
And a large portion of the population in Japan often dose visit shrines and temples during New Years for worshiping their ancestors. This is just a littele customary though! There are also many people who travel to places where they can see the first Sunrise of the year. There are some cultural differences between each countries.
What I want to really know is what a special meaning thanksgiving have
toward Americans.
I feel it is a something special, not just as a holiday.
My family celebrates thanksgiving with a NICEEEE big turkey and a bunch of foods... but I spent this years thanksgiving at my friends house (because I Just got back from my trip to Japan haha, and I wasn't anywhere close to home yet)
Oh! Canadian Thanksgiving is on the 2nd Monday of October!
But I plan on going to the states on Thanksgiving weekend to do some SHOPPING!!!
GOOD DEALS on that weekend! hahaha
Watching the beautiful leaves drop and American Football!!
Are there big football game matches on thanksgiving? College and professional? Anyway football!! Sounds like fun.
It sounds like it is surely one of the best important holidays .
Because America is a big country, so it may be hard to get together with all. ( grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, even neighbors and old freinds!! )
Well just like the name of the holiday...it's a day to give thanks for everything, such as family and loved ones. You celebrate with all of your family because you are showing them how grateful you are to have them in your life. I think that's what makes the day special and not just a regular holiday.
But if you want a history lesson. It's a day to celebrate the end of harvest season. That's why there are lots of food prepared.
here's a link for a more in depth explanation:

Usually it's professional American Football. According to my friend, the reason why it's a big day for the sport is because usually, everyone's home and it's a tradition to watch.
For the record, there's NO Thanks Giving Holiday in England... I'm just telling you how it is - cause so many commies from china, always assume there is.
I think the truth is that in north america many of the holidays have lost their meanings or original intentions although I am not sure about europe, however I do know that christmas was originally a pagan holiday, it was not really made into a judeo christian holiday till much later.
Thanksgiving in north america is nothing more than a chance for people to pig out on lots of food and have big family reunions. North americans getting any day off work consider it a "special day" )
I only celebrate halloween,, walpurgisnacht and new years.
It's been my experience that Thanksgiving and Christmas are for families. Maybe we're old fashioned, but we always got together on Thanksgiving, ate a lot of turkey, and watched football (the women watched the parades on TV).
New Years is sort of a party holiday, for friends. You can spend it with family, but Thanksgiving and XMas are the big family holidays so you can afford to spend New Year's away from home.
