Hello everybody.

I'm trying to find work in Japan, and I need some advice. Right now I'm still in school, but I'll be done by the August, and I'll have my degree soon enough. The degree is in Sociology/Anthropology (I know, not too many options with that one). Eventually I want to go to grad school, but I want to work for awhile before I do that.

Anyway, I've been looking for work as an ESL teacher. I've been trying all the big companies. I'm still waiting for replies from them, but I'm trying to get some back-up plans ready in case those don't work out.

I have 2 questions.

1. What opportunities are out there for a fresh graduate other than teaching English? Considering my degree, I feel like my options are slim. If I can't get the job as a teacher, what else can I do that will get me to Japan? What jobs are available for a foreigner in Japan who doesn't have some kind of business or science degree?

2. Are there graduate programs for foreign students at Japanese Universities? If so, do they offer classes in English? How does one go about getting in? Is this a viable plan-B?

man, good luck dude.
corporate japan will be rough on ya without experience in the professional field... also you wouldn't usually find entry level career opportunities without the native fluency in japanese over there...you should search on hotjobs or monster as you know. or you may even find it from craigslist.

it seems joining american-affiliated companies in japan is the way to your endeavor... start looking in the states.

graduate programs for foreign students?
you should know better if you wanna do it mang.
some classes are offered in english... but it depends on where you go. really.

peace.

Corporate Japan generally looks for people who are proficient in Japanese - often JLPT level 2 as a minimum.

I have found that American affiated companies actualy have tougher standards for Japanese language proficiency - often looking for level 1.

There are jobs out there, but it is a bit of luck to find something that matches your skills. But teaching English is always a possibility.
There's a little info in the FAQs here:

and if you search you'll find people asking about other jobs and grad school. There are grad schools, but they are expensive. There are a few scholarships to apply for if you look up Monbusho and so on.

Good luck.

If you havent been to Japan on a 'WORKING HOLIDAY VISA' I'd recommend you do so now. (If your home country allows) With this visa you can spend a year in Japan, so thats plenty of time to search for jobs and gain a more permanent visa. However, dont tell them that your primary reason for going is to find a job - you wont get the visa. tell them you want to travel.

Otherwise if teaching is your thing, and you cant get the working holiday visa, join JET. The jobs arent great, but it gives you a visa and while you are there you can crack on looking for a job that is more suitable. Just going to japan on a tourist visa and looking for work is hard. Nobody wants to sponsor a visa. Trust me, I have the same problem!

If you want to do something in your field, i'd recommend getting at least 1 year experience in your home country and gaining the JLPT 2 certificate. Or JETRO.

Good luck.. keep fighting...
This is all really helpful. Thanks everyone. Your advice will really help me put together a good back-up plan.
Try and see if you have options in IUJ in Nigata.Scholarship is what you should be looking for.

Also you can try for some scholorship in APU in Beppu.
Way out of place but heard lots of foreigners trying to make entry into Japan land up there.
Heard ppl work also while studying, but not sure of the nitty gritties.
