I'm tired of this one:

Guy: "I'm so angry, Japanese girls don't want me because I'm gaijin!"
Everyone Else: "Shut up."

~or~

Guy: "I'm so angry, Japanese girls don't want me because I'm Japanese!"
Everyone Else: "Shut up."

~~~~~~
Can we talk about art and music on English Only? Every time I click to this group I almost quit the group entirely.
How about music...
Anybody like electronica, reggae, techno, and breaks? There's so much good music coming out now if we look carefully... even combinations of electronic music and acoustic instruments... like the bands "The Books" or "Tunng"! Good music!
I think that's a good idea David. Let's do that soon.
I thought so too!
everytime I clicked Topics, I found "sex"or something.
I like Pops, Punk, Rock.
and recently I'm interested in spanish music.juanes or something.
I like electronic music. Mainly Drum and Bass. Is there a DnB scene in tokyo? or any other type of electronic music, such as trance or jungle?
I got a new photography book last week...
It's by one of my favorite photographers - Annie Liebovitz. She always does the covers for Vanity Fair...Supergood
The picture at the top there is one of hers - see how she has arranged Rumsfeld and Cheney to look like they are from the Sopranos or something...
One easy cultural reference she made with a picture says more about these people than a year of Olbermann doing his monologues....
Recently the polaroid/hotel room/stripped down type pictures have been overly popular - artists like Terry Richardson (the guy who does the American Apparel pictures), Yonehara (mecha-dori), Juergen Teller etc...
Seeing these kinds of pictures again, again, and again has got really boring now, so looking at photographers who take more formalised pictures is really refreshing for me recently.
Music wise ;
I'm listeing to Slum Village Fantastic Vol.1 a lot this past week, I defy anyone to dislike that album (anyone who likes music that is)...
Also heavy rotation for Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, Buddy Rich, and Milt Jackson...
Old Van Morrsion tracks feel good in this warm weather.
Bought Moby Dick for no reason a couple weeks back - thought I'd re-read it as it's been nearly ten years since I last looked at a Melville book.
P/S good luck with the thread David, but I think you are in the wrong place for this kind of topic. We all (maybe like 10~20 people) just say what we are into and it ends there. The other threads you don't like involve discussion so people stay glued to them. Have "discussions" etc...
love love the nu-jazz/soul fusion with whatever.
there's a small community in vancouver who's been influencing me, but it's much bigger in japan so i can't wait to move back...
sucks tho cause a lot of it is out on EP and well, can't play any of them at home... so boo i say, BOO!!
someone needs to lighten up. actually, i get sick of the boring topics on here, like about jobs and clubs in tokyo or something. not everyone lives there.
Yeah I totally agree with you. I hate those topics, they are so annoying.
My music of choice is hip-hop. Preferably underground hip-hop.
If you don't like a certain topic, just ignore it. How hard is that? Mixy is not your personal website, ya know.
I love techno ^^
I am making my second techno album now, should be done in a couple months. Techno is just too much fun to make, for me anyway ^_~
I like trance and progressive house.
I am a piano player, my fave is Chopin, Debussy and Liszt. I love piano concerto and actually practive the two-hand version of some pieces.
I like so much stuff I can't begin to list it all.
I do have a last.fm if you want to look.
I just saw Annie Liebowitz's show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Amazing photos. The photos of the Bush administration are really scary. Very dark energy in their eyes. Annie Liebowitz really catches people's personality.
As for polaroid hotel style, I'm a friend of Yonehara's, I like his work. I can see how you may be seeing too much of that style though, American Apparel is probably responsible for bringing that to popular culture.
>Funky Love Bunny
Free Design! Wow! 1960s fun, right...
Have you heard a band called "Tuung?" They're great, maybe you'd like them.
>えりか
Nu-jazz is also much bigger in Europe. Even though some of my New York friends make that music, they don't play it in the USA, really!
>Wavebird-9 波鳥っ九
Cool, do you know the label "Quannum"? My friend's band is on that label. Their band name is "Apsci." They'll have a new record soon, I heard the songs, they're cool. But it's not really straight hip hop. Very electro pop as well.
>666
Actually, I posted because I want to talk to the people on English Only who want to talk about art and music. See, I can make friends with them because they are just here to have fun. ...If you don't like this topic, you just have to ignore it, right? How hard is that?
(^_^)d
Mixi is not my personal website, but it is a public website and I am free to state my opinion... just as free as the fools who can only talk about women.
>Einn
Cool, me too... I'd like to hear your music. There's links on my MIXI page to my techno tracks. Or you can just go here:
http://senduit.com/c34b90
>テレサ
Jouzu ne... it's hard to play all that music with 2 hands~!
I like Debussy, Bach and Handel. Especially Bach. But also I like modern classical.
>Archaenon
I'll check it. :^)
16> Wow. That's a real coincidence about Yonehara - I know him a little, nothing like friends, but we have met a few times at exhibitions etc. Really nice guy, but he's the first to tell anyone that he isn't a "photographer".
Have you seen the DVD he put out? Yone has been blowing up in a big way since 2005....Good luck to him too : )
The Annie Liebovitz exhibition sounds cool...
I have to admit I only found out about her through Vanity Fair - but I liked the way she choreographs her pictures. David LaChapelle is another good one for the choreographed pictures, but I don't like his taste so much....
Really into Gordon Parks' (R.I.P) pictures as well at the moment.
I think people like Terry Richardson are cool, but it's kind of amazing to me that he gets featured in swanky magazines now. I guess since getting his pictures into PURPLE, that has really paved the way for some of the clients he gets now. But I bet the man himself can't believe some of the work he is getting. The shot he took of himself boning Juliet Lewis reverse "eki-ben" style has to be the craziest picture I've seen in a long time (laughs).
Anyway...
Oh and re: music - really into an aritst called GIGI right now, listening to her album ILLUMINATED AUDIO.
Good for chill outs
What was the old TV commercial?
"Sex is good, but it's not as good as the real thing".
I find the whole obsession with talking about sex a
bit boring too....I was beginning to think you were all
bunny rabbits.
I love hip hop, but recently I love listening to rock music..
There's one my favourite band in Australia, Melbourne. They're just growing up since mid 2006.
The name is
====**AURAL WINDOW**====
Anyone (esp who lives in Melbourne) heard about them?
Two Japanese, 2 OZ. They sing English songs.
I love them soo much!!!
Why don't we catch up sometimes and watch their live together~~!! (but sorry.. at this time, their live is only in Melbourne :( )
(^-^)v
here.. my fave band (or you can see some of my diaries bout them)
http://mixi.jp/view_community.pl?id=1862392
I didn't even read. LOL...
Anyway, I watched Phantom of the Opera in April...really nice. :) Despite that Christine is a bit lousy.
Opera...
how about Movies? I think movies is a good topic too.
I like the Phantom of the Opera too!! I like this moie very much!!
I have its DVD & sound track CD (^-^)!!
I haven't heard of "Aural Window" but speaking
of Japanese musicians doing their thing outside
of Japan, "Mach Pelikan" are pretty cool if you
like short 3 minute punk songs.
Basically a bunch of Japanese guys who came to
Australia to study (and drink beer) and decided
to stay and play music (and drink beer).
I don't know if it really counts but I think
Hikaru Utada lives in the U.S.. I read an
interview with her where she said, it's strange
being completely unknown in the U.S., and then
returning to Japan where she is really well
known.
Oh?? Is it how Hikaru Utada started??
Hee-- I didn't know that!!
No wonder her English is so good
I think she's known all around the world
Err... bout being unknown in US, it's bcoz too many famous singer from US.
Ive just read bout Mach Pelikan, they started in Japan yeah?
Aural Window was born in Melbourne, they're known as Melbourne band (but some people think they're kinda Japanese band, coz some of their fans are group of Japanese people).
Rajio san, if you come to Melbourne, I'll take you to their gig, or if they have gig in Syd, I'll contact you ;) or... you can take me to wach Mach Pelikan (I'm listening to their songs now.. I think I like it too)
Any Australians out there remember THE HARD ONS?
they were so rad♪
The Hard Ons??
Yeah... they are so hard (O_o)
Ive just heard their songs from myspace
I like rock, but not this hard ( ^^;)
Hahahaa.. no..!! too bad, no gay will like me (coz I'm a girl)
I love reggae any native english speakers in the tokai area that feel the same?
>x'ty
Ohh, I just got back from Australia to New York where I live! I'm checking Aural Window's Myspace. Sounds cool.
Australia is a very rock music culture.
As for music, I love electro and indie, dancy, nu rave types...
It's easy to grasp one's music taste by the choice of labels I guess. Mine goes to the likes of Ed Banger, Kitsune, DFA, Domino etc.
I've been listening to Klaxons, LCD Soundsystem et al these days on my iPod in the gym and still go clubbing (almost compulsory haha). like to go to see bands as well.
I doubt anyone in this community shares the same/similar music interest with me but if these names click in your mind, please feel free to give me a shout!
Basically I used to listen to the music quite often,but lately I prefer to be in the quiet place. Last music I listened to was Elemia's Ellergy, a classical music. I sometimes listen to some J-pops at a fast food restaurant, such as Mos Burger. Yet I don't know how to access to the latest music scene, so I don't know who's singing the tune, etc.
Thanks David (^^)
Anytime.. when you come back to OZ, message me on mixi〜♪
Reggae is great.
I'm scheming a trip to Jam-dung hopefully this summer.
World music is great... Ash Dargan on the Didgeridoo is fascinating. I am surprised how difficult it is to find other foreigners in Japan that appreciate that instrument and the music.
