Someone getting married because of pregnancy had been frowned upon for a quite some time in Japan...
But not any more!! Check this out. http://www.omedeta.net/ We should no longer call it "dekichatta-kon". "Omedeta-kon" is the new way to go!
Does this have something to do with the Japanese gov't trying to encourage young people to have babies? Sure, this would definitely make things easier for the young people to commit and have a family right away.
oh, i think this is good, and i dont think "omedeta kon" is bad if they love each other. just process is little different!lol
but i guess many people will still call it"dekichatta kon", especially old people and that this is not gonna help to stop 少子化.
why? cos they dont understand the root. the women wont have babies because they dont have enough money to bring up their children. it cost way too much! and many women wont get married cos they can make it on their own so they decide to be alone.
the surroundings are very different nowadays. so they(governers) should realise that and make some good policies .(maybe they know that but they just ignor it)
if it goes on, japan is gonna be a country where only old people live!!lol
I don't think it's a bad thing either. I just thought that it's funny how the language change as people's perspective change...
I am a young person who is having a baby, and realized that Japan actually do support pregnant mothers more than I thought. But of course for even younger woman who only works part-time will definitely have a financial difficulties when she gets pregnant. Culturally, it's a little harder for the women to really take advantage of the pregnant women's right in Japan, though...
This may be a bit off-topic, but there are two types of "omedeta kon." One is where the couple was planning to get married anyway and just happened to jump-start it. The other is where they are somewhat forced to get married because of the pregnancy. Are they both called "omedata-kon"?
Yeah Dai, they were "planning to get married anyway" *wink wink*
Sounds like what you tell your parent's when they find out that you knocked up your girlfriend... haha
bad business.
yes it tends to work but I would think it sucks to
marry someone because you kocked em up.
(unless it was YOUR plan from the beginning.)
These marriages end up being one of the many
tale of the sexless marriage or trapped and cheating
spouse. But, then it could work out.
I prefer "omedetakon" to "dekichattakon".
Because "omedetakon"'s sound cute.
In the "dekichattakon"'s sound looks like if a couple before getting married did not have a baby, they would not marry each other.
I think both sound's marriage is a happy event.
#8 You are wrong. Japan is great for blacks, especially. A friend of mine, who is a loser by the way, gets a lot of attention from Jap girls, mainly because he is black. Around here, in the Aomori prefecture, Jap girls love to play with black dudes, but they usually marry white dudes, though.
Well, I think we should consider “who” uses omedeta-kon for what purpose. Omedeta-kon is usually used in the wedding business market, though dekichatta-kon is said to become popular among young people. Several wedding magazines coinage alterative names for dekichatta-kon, NOT for those young girls trying to start new life with loved one, but for the business purpose. (such as mamarriage, double happy, maternity wedding, etc)
Therefore, I think those alternative names such as omedeta-kon does not necessarily mean changing social perspectives. Worse, it possibly means “marketization” of those young girls, and oppress them more and more economically. What do you guys think? Am I too critical?
Dekichatta implies a surprise, meaning the pregnancy is something that should never have taken place. Although this is already a soft way of marriage that follows pregnancy, still, it indicates the baby is a result of a mistake. This kind of marriage has long been frowned upon by older population who had pre-WW2, Confusionism oriented moral education.
Recently, however, with older people becoming less vocal, the Japanese society has been becoming more and more lenient to different shapes of marriages.
While aging of the society proceeds at an overwhelming speed, less and less people are inclined to have babies or to get married in the first place. This trend has been boosting social acceptance to what was once considered "unnatural" marriage.
With extra-marrital sex gaining recognition, pregnancy out of wedlock has become an everyday news. It is not a surprise as long as the parents are over certain ages, and on dating terms. Omedetakon is a reflection of such social positive change toward babies.
That's the reason I asked the OP about the two different kinds of "omedeta-kon." It's definitely shotgun marriage when a couple is forced to get married because of pregnancy, in which case it fits the classical definition of "dekichatta-kon." OTOH, the term "omedeta-kon" applies to any marriage with a pregnant woman, whether or not the marriage was planned on. They are two different things.
TWENTY TWO,
As for the political correctness, I believe the use of new terms will raise awareness among the current generation. It won't happen overtime, but it will gradually sink in. I used to find terms like "flight attendant" weird, but it now comes a lot more naturally than "stewardess." Took me a few years. :)
To name the marriage style positively or negatively
makes the differences.
In Japan it is the shameful and sad thing that a woman
deliveres the baby without marriage.
That is why couples try to get married when they knew
the pregnancy.
Of course, there is the another option that is abortion.
So Japan is also notorious for the high ratio of abortion in the world.
I prefer the delivery to the abortion in this case.
Naturaly the pregnancy itself is the graceful thing
so that the couple should be celebrated by the society.
In this sense, I would like to use "Omedeta-kon" instead
of "Dekichatta-kon"
Whether Omedeta-kon is well accepted by the Japanese
society or not is to depend upon the mass-media's
decision to use Omedeta-kon instead of Dekichatta-kon.
When it comes to use the Omedetakon in the media,
there will be the increasing number of Omedeta-kon
among the Japanese couples.
Because Japan is the country where Kotodama affects
the perception of reality.
