What is it about telephone companies in Japan??? I used to have a Docomo cellphone until the signal died where I live. Docomo's response was "Buy a new phone". I only had that phone at the time for 6mths! Well, I DID buy a new phone... from Softbank. I got my phone bill from softbank last week to discover that it was 20,000yen!!!!! I called softbank customer service to find out why. After waiting 45min on hold, I was connected to customer service who informed me that I was using the gold plan "Oh" I said. What does that mean? She replied "You should check the internet to select a new plan". Damn! I thought it was CUSTOMER SERVICES job to help me choose a new plan!!!! I checked the internet. They have blue plans, gold plans, orange plans, white plans, grey plans if you're wearing green socks, red plans for tuesdays, gold LL plans gold lphgyukd ht-^% plans minus 4657blue = orange.... and the list goes on!!!! So I walked 1hr to the softbank shop who advised me to get the white plan.... and 57 exceptions. THEN she informed me that I now have to pay 100yen for softbank to send me the bill!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are they joking??????????? I refused!!!! How can they do that????????? I went home. I called my friend. My NTT phone won't dial out. Shit. it receives ok, but won't dial out. I called ntt customer service. They checked the line. They said "There's nothing wrong with it". They said "You dial the numbers too fast". I don't think so. They said "Your phone is old". It's 4mths old. They said "We will come check it. It will cost 4500yen for service." Are you joking?????????? I am connecting to IP phone next week. Through adsl connections in the past and telephone service, I've had 10yrs of problems and lies from ntt and now softbank too. Check your phone bill. If they charge to send you a bill and you accept that, what's next???
>Simon
I understand your feeling from my heart.
Few days ago I called Softbank Customer Services and waited about 15 minutes !!!
After that I was asked to do check by the internet and I couldn't get any new imformation from the page.
I can't believe their job.
I only know softbank.
How about another company's CUSTOMER SERVICES ?
Simon I doubt it will console you much but what happened to you has the been the experience of many (new) Japanese Softbank customers too - hidden charges, getting sold the wrong plan, unhelpful staff, "sales" staff that don't actually know anything about what they are selling etc.
I think Softbank just kind of piled headfirst into the Cellphone game and left the thinking about it part for later.
They are just kind of making up their business strategy as they go along now....
I'm an NTT Docomo subscriber and haven't had any problems in 6years of use, but then again I'm one of those people that rarely answer the phone because we can't be arsed with it. I just pay my bills on time and buy a new phone every now and then. Never had any service problem.
I hear nothing but good things about AU, so if you are *really* over it, you might want to look into them.
They have the coolest phones too....
Don't get too worked up about it all though....
I remember life wasn't that hard, infact pretty peachy, before Cellphones became part of our lives.
I have a Panasonic 705p phone on that 26mth contract.... and I got it in October. But actually, by starting to change the contract to charge me 100yen to send the bill to me, THEY have changed the contract, so I have no problem to quit the contract. I doubt if they would ever take me to court for 60,000yen, and even if they did, Japan court system is weak... It would be very difficult for them to MAKE me pay.
It's not just the telephone companies, it's all Japanese companies and establishments. They all have some real f_cked up business practices. Especially these f_ckin japanese landlords here in Misawa. They will do anything to f_ckin keep your Security deposit. If they did this in the U.S., I would f_ckin sue them. But I would prefer to kill them all!!!
Phone companies are the same the world over.
I had a problem with Telstra (Australia). I
called their customer service centre at 3.45pm
and got a message that "Your call is important
to us and will be answered by the first available
operator". Over the next hour and 15 minutes I
received more messages about how important my
call was and ensuring me that it was progressing
through the queue. Then at 5.00pm I received
a different message, "Thank you for calling
Telstra, our hours are 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday
to Friday, please call again during these hours"
(click).
I use docomo and while I don't like them, they are fairly honest.
When it comes to being a foreigner and trying to do business with them though, they are a pack of assholes.
I had to go and change the meigi-nin on my phone. It was registered in my friends name. I showed them my gaijin card, an official govt issued document containg all the relevant legal information on visa status and so on, but they want to see my passport???? Why?? Because that's the policy. Go back a few days later, by this time my friend has moved out of town and her mum has to go with me to help me and to cancel her daughter's docomo contract too. I had everything but they told my friend's mum that she didn't have enough documentation to prove that she is a relative. 3rd time round we succeed. I had to show my gaijin card and passport which contain the exact same information anyway, but now the phone is registered in my name.
I dunno how they aren't going bankrupt with shitty service like this. Docomo reek of arrogance but it's a case of the devil you know.
I've been using AU (used to be IDO) for about 12 years now with no problems and
excellent customer service. They even got me sorted by email when I was in Thailand
and couldn't connect there, then again when my phone was stolen. I usually keep my
phone (global passport) on English and I've had zero problems.
Having said that, I want a phone that can be used in any country in Asia AND
send and receive SMS text messages. Softbank wins in that department, and, as fate
would have it, I went in their office in Inage yesterday and picked up the info I
need to switch my number to them. Now I'm having second thoughts. At the very least I
need to make it crystal clear about how much I'll be paying if I do make the switch.
As for NTT, I would never use any of their products, because since I moved to Japan
15 years ago, they've done nothing but try to maintain their monopoly at huge
expense to the customer. Ditto for the super scam "Fletz" fiberoptic internet
service....Advertised as 100MBS -- but when they came to set it up, with a bill
of 20,000yen, they said, "Oh, that's only if you plug in at NTT. From here,
you'll be lucky to get 2MBS." Fuckers!
I won't be able to resolve any of my problems with softbank until tomorrow because the ONLY guy who has any authority who can speak English is off until then ... Excellent customer service!!
As for ntt, yesterday they accused me of
1. I dial my numbers too quick
2. My 4mth old phone is broken.
I could receive calls, but when I tried to make calls all I could get was the Japanese message that I had misdialled... This to me logically means that my calls were making it to the ntt depot, but no further. The ntt tech disputed this. This morning I took my phone to Eden where I bought it and asked them to try it out. Surprise surprise... it worked fine. I called ntt again (and somewhat louder) who sent a tech to "have a look" a few hours later... Surprise surprise again... the problem didn't exist... fuckers.
Further, last night, my Jap friend started checking my ntt bills. We discovered that I have been paying for call forwarding (at commercial rates) for the last 6mths which I never asked for!... fuckers
