I've been talking about this topic with my co-workers for some time now.
Yes, Technically nothing of any good comes out of watching TV. It basically turns you into a lazy vegetable. There are very few actual educational shows on TV. Most are for Entertainment reasons.
Some of my Co-workers don't even allow their Children to watch TV. Not even Cartoons. Sometimes they will allow them to watch Educational shows. But that is it. Did you grow up like this?
I rarely watched TV as a child. But i think the future generation is becoming more addicted to watching TV. Especially, Since the technology to create, broadcast and view shows is become more High Tech.
Do you think watching TV is a complete waste of time?
Is it better to read Books rather than watch TV?
I myself prefer a good TV Show over a book..
I'm not looking for Statistics.. I just want pure opinion based on Cultural and personal experiences.
Except for possibly affecting your vision, I don't see anything wrong with watching TV. Of course, watching it too much may ruin your life, but that's not unique to TV.
I grew up not watching TV too much, partly because my parents would only allow us (me and my brother) to watch TV for only 30 minutes per day except for Sunday. That often made me feel left out in school - friends talked about this and that programs that I couldn't watch.
I still don't watch TV too much today. A couple of one-hour dramas per week plus some news... that's about it. I spend a lot more time in front of the TV set playing Wii. :)
Well back to my opinion on TV. Like I said, I don't think it's bad to watch it reasonably, even for entertainment. :)
is the reason of entertainment really bad?
i never think so.
the knowledge we learn is very unclear in our life, like the fomulation of the mathmatics and how to use lots of them. and social system and terms of them is also same. because we learn the types of the tax and have to memorize what names they have in our school.
but they are rarely seen unless we try to know the social things.
the entartaiment programs seem to be waste of time and out of learnig at once perception.
however such progams these days focus on the social issues and other things we have to learn.
in addition to this, for other good example,
quiz program have been popular like "the quiz millionair", you know?
this program was spread in the world.
of course i am for the bad things of the entairtaiment programs. but how to get good things and learn something from TV is up to you.
and....
programs which move our hearts is very very important for our growing.
we need to be moved lots of times in our life.
TV gives us these things.
I dont think its a good idea to let children watch TV untill they become 5 or 6 years old. They should spend their time with their parents.
But after 6 they can watch some fun( cartoon) and educational programs.
I grew up with watching TV sometimes.Maybe couple cartoons a week.Right now,I never watch TV ....But I use my computer a lot and I watch the Tv shows that i download and i play games...
I of course do enjoy tv shows, games, etc...
But I know that i should stop using my computer too much and try to spend my time with more reading books, doing something natural or even praying.
I have stopped smoking, I have stopped alchoal and I will stp using com. too much soon.
( I hope)
Too much of anything is a probably not a good idea, but TV is not inherently bad for you. People always say don't watch too much because "TV makes you stupid," but they have it backwards. TV won't make you stupid unless you let it. People make TV stupid. Just the fact that educational shows even exist should be proof that TV doesn't have to be a medium of stupid mindeless entertainment.
But seriously TV is not that bad. You have to watch it with a critical eye. Of course there are stupid things (its jam packed with stupid shit), but there are stupid books (have you ever read a romance novel), and there are stupid movies. These are just mediums, they are only stupid if we make them stupid. If we put in time and effort, we can make these things brilliant. And there are brilliant TV shows, and movies, and books, and games, you just have to look for them.
Plus its all subjective, what we deem "stupid" or "brilliant" will differ from person to person.
If you want to shelter your kids from the "evils of TV" then good luck, but I don't think kids are stupid we think they are. Just teach them to be skeptical, and view the media with a critical eye, then they can understand whats bullshit and whats not.
I learned many things from TV growing up. I watched TV with my family A LOT as a child, but now I watch about 1 hour per week (I'm in love with the show Heroes). Anyway, I would say that if it were a beautiful day outside and I had children I would not allow them to watch TV. However, at night when everyone is at home, I think it is okay.
I don't think TV is all that bad. Too much TV is bad,
but as long as you don't spend every waking hour in
front of it, it can be very relaxing.
I generally only watch 2 TV programs a week, House
and Top Gear.
That's enough for me but if there is something else
worth watching I'll make an effort.
I turn on TV but rarely watch it except for news.
It's like a background music and gives me some
info such as booming trends or upcoming stars and so on.
Like it or not TV is a major link for people to the worlds outside of their immediate spheres. It also serves as the firts learning tools for those that can not read, ie, children etc.. For that reason it is the parents responsibility to control this tool. To make sure children or others that are are vulnerable dont watch too much of the wrong thing. Tv is good but like all things it can be harmful if not used correctly.
TV is great ... if it's not junk TV and you don't just sit vegging day in day out. Hardly ever watch it myself, and didn't even own one back in the UK for years. Never really had the time and was always busy doing something else. I think TV has a value though, like any media ... it can be educational, informative, fun, can take you on a bit of a journey form your living room sometimes.
I read, use the computer and listen to music far more than I watch TV, I have to admit. But if there's something worth watching I'm more than happy to take the time.
Have a TV in Japan but it's never on, only when Emiko's in the house. Catch the bilingual news as and when, but I do most of my catching up through the net these days on BBC, or somesuch.
Have to confess .. I hate cooking and food shows, lame comedy and stuff like Big Brother.
TV can be a powerful tool for spin and propaganda, which is a real downside. Sadly, there are a few gullible souls who'll believe anything they hear on the 'idiot box'. But is that different with any other media? I don't think so.
I think tv was a good idea that went bad...
To some extent there's too much freedom of information...
ie... news shows too much information and frequently makes things more complicated than it needs to bee...
Reality TV is like a plauge...
If only puck hadn't been kicked off of that stupid Real World in the first season it would have been a bust...
There are far too many stupid and non-contributing programs anymore...
Some just make you ashamed of yourself...
I worry sometimes about what shows like Jerry Springer tell people in other countries about americans...
I like both reading books and watching TV. I think everything has two sides, one is a good side the other is a ...not so good side, so we must be careful when we watch TV!! Sometimes tv is good but recently the problem called "Aru Aru Daijiten, Sure, Sure, Great Encyclopedia!!"incident can tell us we must be careful not to believe certain tv entertaimental programs. They sometimes just have to make up stories.. but the watchers often just believe!! Be careful!!
Yes, yes! The Discovery Channel is a nice one!! My husband really likes it too!!
I like reading too!! It gives me a lot of power!! Or relaxing... or learning...well, many many good things!!
But... both give me a bad eye-sight...!! My eyes easily get sored...
Anyway..., we can pick up both good things!!
Learning is my part of my life!!
I don't watch any ground wave channels.
The program content of commercial broadcasting are silly and ridiculous.
I feel that any kind of news programs are hype and gimmicky!
The program I want to see is in BS/CS satellite channels.
I find books really boring because I cant just sit there, hold a book in my hand and start reading it. Sometimes I like reading, but very rarely. If reading websites counts at all, then I do a whole lot of that. I am not sure if it is considered a substitute for a book though...
