Well I was wondering, is it me or visa is really a pain in the arse to obtain? It seems that for my american, australian or kiwi friends it is a way much easier than for us europeans... why? Why all of mine non-european friends get their visa very quickly and not us? Worse, it seems that I am the only one to get 6 months visa! Wait I applied twice for 3years visa and that's twice I get 6months.... and it took me twice 3months to get it while for my friend it took 1month and got 3years, he is american. Should I marry someone to give my european visa to a japanese girl and get her visa? No I am only joking, but really, why is it hard for me that really love this country, learn the culture and language, to get a visa while for an american or australian that will stay only one or two years and doesn't give a shit about Japan but loves J-girls, he will get it straight away. Is that discrimination?

that's ruled by international agreements... you may find out the reason with a simple google search. If you are still a student you may apply for a scholarship, good luck!
Maybe your US and Australian friends all of them just happen to have a degree? I have heard it is a deal breaker when obtaining a work visa. I have got a lot of experience in getting visa since I need it anywhere I go and I can tell you that unless you come to the immigration office ABSOLUTELLY prepared with ABSOLUTELLY all documents they may or may not ask you your visit is not gonna be pleasant. If you need help with paper work there are English speaking Lawyers who can help you. Just look into Metropolis.
Immigration is the true calling of the dyed-in-the-wool beauracratic asshole. If I didn't have sponsorship from my employer they wouldn't have let me stay. They also demanded to see the Actual Document of my degree, rather than a offical transcript, I mean, who the hell does that?

Keep fighting the good fight, Stout.
DanceStar is right. IF you want a longer visa, you need to add value to Japan. A good job, qualification etc. Otherwise, you are lucky to get a 3 month stay....
I am European and Particularly from Greece and I obtained a 3 year Visa through the company that Employs me. I also got it with the first try and on the card it says International Resources / Something else visa. I guess depends how respected is the place you work for. But being in Japan I know that every case is different since it really depends on the officer that will handle your situation.
Good luck
Degree is not the problem as I have one plus other diploma from other schools, and working for the swiss gouverment in Japan (before) the problem for them was that I have double nationality, so they couldn't understand why I was french and swiss at the same time, they called my gf and boss 2 or 3 times to ask ゙but why does he has two passports?゙
DJ Stout:
You should apply as one of the Nationality and not both. The system is probably not designed to handle it.

I have dual nationality, but when I apply for my work visa I would only use one.

FYI Japan citizens are not suppose to have more than one citizenship, but I have many friends that have foreign passport but they just don't tell Japan :)

When you landed with whichever passport, that how you are currently declaring your citizenship.

i.e. Person with UK/Japan passport enters a country with their Japanese passport, gets in trouble and gets arrested, they will probably have no rights to get consulate help from the UK consulate, but they could ask Japan etc.. Same kind of situation when you enter Japan will a Japanese passport, UK consulate will not have duristriction in helping you in Japan.

... queue the movie scenes where people run in to an Embassy with their passports :)
Yeah I know that coming with my french passport at first was a error... But I had no choice as we don't have working holiday visa with the swiss passport, so it was my only way, and then had no choice again as I started working for the swiss gouverment.
People trying to immigrate to NZ also have a hard time to get visas. It is easy to get a visitor visa or student visa. But work visas or residency is really hard to get. Quite a lot of people have to hire immigration lawyers to help them out.
Every where in the world it's hard to get a visa, and I guess Switzerland is really hard too, but being swiss in Japan doesn't help at all, my country are not doing any pressure to help us unlike other countries.
Well it's a petty as I am really trying hard to stay here and try to understand their culture (but I know that I am white and will never be accepted like a japanese), and it seems that like you are saying, there is almost no chance unlike many others, to find a nice japanese wife (or husband for a foreign girl). The thing is I am not for those kind of pratices (getting married for visa).
Well do you have the website address? I am sure everybody will be thanking you for it hahahahahaha. But yeah if it's real love of course I will marry her, but not after 3months only.
I guess it's kind of a legal discrimination.

Countries usually have treaties/contracts? with
each other.
Europe probably has less #s than America/Australia etc.
So you probably have to wait longer periods.

It's wierd, like Mexicans could usually only
get like 2 weeks of travel visa compared to
Japanese that get 3 months into the US.

This world's messed up.
The length of time you're permitted to stay in Japan depends on the type of visa issued. Most Americans, Canadians Aussies and Kiwi's living in Japan will have already obtained a working visa before arriving in Japan through company sponsorship, in which case they're usually issued a one year visa at first.

If you can prove you have a steady income and/or plenty of savings to live then you shouldn't have many problems. I have an EU passport and have never had any delays or problems with renewing or changing my visa.
