talk to 人 about モノ は、人に、モノ(について)を 紹介する という意味ですね −−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−− 2) (ト書き) 帰国後、日本語による新聞を発行したり、 通訳をして、日米の掛け橋として活躍する。 Hikozo *did much for the two countries. He *spent his life as a big bridge between Japan and America.
★ After the conference in Tokyo, Dr. Simons came back to the States.
「東京での会議の後、シモンズ教授は米国に帰国しました」 という様に、come back to 場所:は、 その場所(=本拠にしている地)に帰る、 戻るという意味です。
★I want to come back to Fukuoka. 福岡に帰りたい という意味ですね。
さて、このcome back は、色々と応用が利きます。
例えば、[日本語でいうところの「返り咲く」「復帰」という 意味合いに相当します]
★鮭は、自分の生まれた川に戻っていきます。 (鮭には帰趨本能があります) Salmon come back to the river where they were born.
★ Mr. Muneo Suzuki cannot come back to Nagata-cho. (to the political scene) 鈴木宗男氏は、政界には復帰できない、 となりますね
★ The ex-champion beat the current champion in the match last night and came back to the champion. →昨夜の試合で、前チャンピオンは、現チャンピオンを打ち破り チャンピオンに返り咲いた。
I don't think Momoe Yamaguchi will come back to the show business. 山口百恵さんは、芸能界に復帰しないでしょう。 という意味合いですね
★ come back to normal といえば、正常化する、 という意味合いで、 I hope the situation in Iraq will come back to normal. (イラク情勢の正常化を望みます)という意味に使えますね ------------------------------- ◎2 TALK TO 人 ABOUT モノ

英語でプレゼンをする場合や、何かお話をする場合には よく使う言い方です
★ モノ紹介する、説明する: Let me talk to you about the history of Tokyo.
「今日は、東京の歴史をお話ししたいと思います」 (紹介)
★ The managing director of the company talked to its stockholders about its recent decrease in sales last week. 「先週、当該企業の社長が、最近、売上が落ちている事に付いて 説明をした」
−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−− ◎ 3) do much for --- これも便利な言い方ですね:
Hikozo did much for the two countries.
日米両国の為に、沢山のことをした、というのは、 「貢献した、尽力した」という意味合いですね。
例) 1) 定年退職する課長さんに、社長さんが You have done very much for us so far. Thanks a lot. 「我が社に色々と尽くしてくれて、有難う御座います」
2) You have to do much for your wife. 「奥さん孝行しなくちゃね。」 という意味合いですね。
★これを逆の意味にするには、 do much for を do little for do nothing for となります
3) [あの会員さんは、何も活動していないので、 もう登録から外しましょうよ!]
That member does nothing for us. Let's get him out of the list.
4) 弟子を鍛える為に、敢えて何もしませんでした。
I did nothing (special) for my pupil on purpose to train her as a professional translator.
★更に応用させて、do too much/many -- for
5) [過保護]という言い方:
That mother did too much for her children. That' why they are spoiled.
あのかあちゃんは、子供を過保護にしすぎた。 だけん、性根がないと。
−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−− 4 SPEND ONE'S LIFE AS ---
He *spent his life as a big bridge between Japan and America.
spend は、時間を過ごす、お金を使う という意味です。 spend の後に、his life/my life など時間、期間を示す単語があれば、 lifeの場合は、生涯を過ごす(⇒生涯を捧げる)などの意味合いになりますね
1) I want to spend my life as a professional interpreter. 私は、生涯、一通訳者として、生涯を全うしたい。
2) 退社の時の挨拶として、 I've spent good 5 years as a business person here. 「こちらで、5年間、ビジネスマンとして有意義に過ごせました」となります
3) He spent 10 years as a baseball coach at the high school. 田中さんは、あの学校の野球部のコーチとして、10年間 活動しました(10年間コーチした)
